Beautiful sounds DD/DTS amp... does wonders with music for an AV receiver. Sound is clear, present and open... this amp will blow you away, don't rule it out in your shortlist...!!

After what seems to be endless research on receivers and other hi-end gears, I settled for the AV-10 two weeks ago. This receiver is absolutely a gem. It performs wonderfully well on both music and movies. Music is clean and detailed at both low and high volumes.I intend to enjoy this BAD BOY for a VERY!, VERY!!, VERY!!! LONG TIME.

After 9 months of searching and investigating about what would the perfect a/v receiver that would suit my a-little-above-the-average expectations and would provide the best price-performance and gadgetery available/used ratio, I landed last week by complete accident into this GEM (in intended uppercase), that blew my fuses away the very moment I heard it. After some "discussing" with my wife about the resources that would have to be redirected to this GEM (obviously wives never understand why do men need amplifiers/computers/dvd's/etc) and some negotiations, an agreement was reached and I was "allowed" to "invest" in it.
And since 3 days ago, I'm the happiest man on earth, having watched Blade Runner and The Matrix in full surround over and over and enjoying every minute of it. And music sounds also superb in this unit.
WHAT A SOUND !!!! And WHAT A PRICE !!! (I paid less than 800 US dollars for it). It's so easy to setup. AND IT'S A NAKAMICHI !!!!!!!!!
Pros:
1. Fantastic sound, with all the punch that I can possibly need.
2. Price (in my case)
3. Ease of setup and use.
4. No extra DSP modes that nobody ever uses because they don't know how to differentiate between them, or how to listen to one record or another.
Just Natural and Hall, aside from DTS/Dolby Digital/Pro Logic (these ones
are chosen automatically by the amp), leaving many less doubts.

Cons:
1. Remote not so clear, too large, hard to read in dark rooms.
2. No phono input (no turntables for the old records). But we're in the 2000s,
it's time for CDs/DVDs/MDs.
3. No tone adjustment from remote.
4. No manual tuning for the tuner from remote, only presets.

I've always been a Nak cassette deck user and as I found a good deal for a DR-10
I started looking at Nak receivers so that I could control the deck with a remote. I found a good price on the AV-10 and I had no idea how much better it would sound then the Yamaha I've been using. I've got the smaller set of Magnaplanars and it sounds like I have new speakers! This amp just doesn't flinch. It handles peaks with ease and my speakers have bass they never had before. And, as it should, it sounds the best with all tone controls defeated. It's also very easy to setup and use.

Nakamichi AV-10
Initially this product was great - great sound, great ease of use. Beware the long term though. Now our AV-10 is 2 1/2 years old, and has started having problems with the front left channel amplification. We've treated the unit gently - not operating it at huge volumes or playing mega-distortion music through it. We are very disappointed in the quality of the unit, that it would have a major functional problem at less than 3 years.

To top it all off, Nakamichi's 3 year warranty is only considered valid if you buy from an authorized Nakamichi dealer. Hopefully our dealer is authorized - I have yet to find that out.

If the AV-10 amplification problem has blown the tweeter in our Linn 4-way speakers, I am going to come back and rate this baby a zero.

PERFECT RECEIVER FOR THE AUDIOPHILES ONLY AS NO GIMMICK IS CONCERNED . IT IS A MUST FOR THE PURIST LISTENER . OF COURSE SEPARATE COMPONENTS COULD SOUND BETTER BUT THEIR PRICES ARE ALSO VERY MUCH HIGHER . HENCE FOR ITS VALUE THE AV-10 DESERVES TO BE CLASSIFIED AS A HIGH END RECEIVER .
