Panasonic DVD-A120
Purchased a DVD-A120 from Onecall for $330 incl. S&H. As panasonic says, it loads DVDs real fast. The picture quality is excellent. I have played 5 movies on it till now and haven't faced a glitch. Overall its an excellent player. Go for this player if you have a receiver with AC-3 decoder. The player has component video and an s-video connection. It also has 2 audio outputs. It does not have an AC-3 decoder built-in but has an output.

Panasonic DVD-A120
The first DVD-A120 I purchased played movies flawlessly until I rented "The Postman" and when it got to track 14 it started to pixelize really bad until it finally stopped. I thought it was the disk so when I explained the problem to Blockbuster video, they opened a brand new case and rented that one to me. Well, sure enough, at track 14 it started the same thing. Being less than one month old, I brought the unit back to SoundTrack where I purchased it. My salesman listened to the problem and said it was probably a bad set of disks, I asked if we could play the disk (I had brought it with me) on his shelf unit. We did that and found that the DVD played flawlessly on their demo unit, he then gladly exchanged my player for a new one, which when I got home and hooked up ran and played "The Postman" just fine.

I would consider the DVD-A120 and entry level unit, and so my rating is based on a comparison of those units. The picture quality is outstanding, blacks are clear and concise. The 5 different fast forward and rewind speeds are outstanding. Audio can still be heard at 2x. Pressing pause freezes the frame entirely with no jitter or shake. This unit is both AC-3 and DTS compatible as long as you have a decoder in your receiver (or other hardware). Dolby Digital is outstanding and a must have for any HT buff. I have just ordered a Denon AVR-3600DTS receiver and anxiously await to hear how much better (if any) DTS is over AC-3.

This unit lacks a seperate laser pick up for CD's, but plays them fairly well. It also lacks a zoom feature that Toshiba has. Because of this I rate it a 9. The remote is laid out nicely and not too big. You will be very happy with this unit, but due to my problem with the first unit, I would suggest you play a copy of "The Postman" and see if it has problems after chapter 14. In lieu of this, I would be wary of buying a unit mail order since it's such a pain to exchange via mail.

Panasonic DVD-A120
Started out great, but after 48 days, I'm seeing an increase in pixellation problems and "NO DISC" errors. Going to exchange it for another. Panasonic I believe still has a quality issue with their players.

Panasonic DVD-A120
I bought an A120 and it piexelized on the opening "spinning globe" scene on Armagedon and the menu screen with Boogie nights.

Exchanged the unit, and the scenes work flawlessly, but now it screws up the usual suspects to the point the player shuts down.

its an excellent player... if you can get it to work.

too bad....

I originally bought a Panasonic A120 from Costco for only $320, and that was over 4 months ago. Unfortunately, it decided to stop working. Costco was nice and gave me back my money, and out I went to find another player. I considered the Pioneer DV-414 and also the 501 by JVC, but I went with the A120 cuz of the price and features, plus I've heard enough complaints about lip-sync problems to make me cautious. I got the my player for $330 at Good Guys. Not bad, and I have 30 days to find a better price. I wish I could have bought it at Costco again, but they only have the A112. I LOVE the fact that that the 120 has component video output, along with DTS decoding. Woo. Good deal! My only complaints are the remote (it's so-so), that it can't read CD-Rs, and that there is no zoom option.

Panasonic DVD-A120
Bought the unit 12/11/99. Within a few days it was mistracking badly on a disc it had played perfectly 2 or 3 days earlier. This involved both audio and video distortion, including "pixellation" of random areas of the picture into little square blocks. The problem appeared to be getting worse, so I returned the unit and exchanged it for another. The new one did not have the same problem, so I knew it wasnt the disc. Anyhow, bottomline this is a great basic unit with everything you'll need (assuming you don't need a 5.1 decoder). The remote is easily operated with one hand, as opposed to that huge Toshiba remote. I would, however, HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a "service guarantee" to cover yourself if the unit breaks down. From reading other consumer reviews (which I did after I bought the unit) it seems like many others have had similar trouble. I can't say for sure the new unit won't develop the same problem, however if it does I'm covered once the warranty period expires (1 yr parts, 90 days labor). FYI, the first unit was manufactured 2/99, the new one was manufactured 3/99.

I've had my A120 for about 8 months now and have played about 100 DVD's on it with virtually no problems. I paid $267.00 (including shipping) from an online retailer I found on EBay. I'm surprised to read the negative reports others have posted here, most of the other reports I've read on audioreview owners seem to like it very much. For the money it's very tough to beat.

I've had it about nine months. Picked up through an Egghead action, or something like that, for about $275. Great picture, plenty of outputs (comp, svideo, etc.), and have never had a problem. If only my TV had comp in...

Panasonic DVD-A120
When it works, this is an amazing DVD player. However, it frequently fails to play extras on many of my DVDS (and I'm talking about some 15 or so of the 35 DVDs that I have). Moreover, it often stops at various scenes in my DVDs. When it does so, it takes some time before I can get it to stop and restart.

Avoid this player at all costs.

Panasonic DVD-A120
This player worked nearly flawlessly for exactly one year. At one year and one month (1 month after the waranty expired) it began to skip tracks and "pixilize". Then it would not play some disks, I actually returned a disk to Wal-Mart believing it was faulty, it wasn't, the Panasonic player was. Last month, (5 months after the waranty expired) the DVD player stopped playing DVD's entirely and will only play some audio CD's. Those of you who are happy with your players at one year BEWARE! If it does malfunction Panasonic will NOT work with you at all!
I am currently trying to get help, but customer service is lacking with this company.
