Celestron C5
I found this scope used at a good price, the motor base is the same as the old C8s with smaller twin fork tines and ac motor that tracks well. Mine came with an adjustable heavy duty field tripod and with the smaller 5 inch tube it is much more steady then the C8s I've looked through.Stars at high power are clean airy disks with more light scattered in to the difraction rings then my Tele Vue Ranger.This scope gives suprisingly good views of the planets and easily outperforms the ranger in all areas except for low power wide field viewing.This paticular scope is in very good condition cosmetically and has a no nonsence everything you need nothing you d'ont attitude that just make me want to see what's out there.

Celestron C5
I had one of the first ones made. It had poor optics and a rough working focusser. I can't recommend it. I recently bought a nexstar 5, and it was optically excellent.

I got mine used at a thrift store for $30, and paid Celestron $300 to provide a new corrector plate, recoat the mirrors, and rework the clock drive. This was a steal for this classic telescope. The views are great to about 120x, and with the original fixed mount (which I got at teletrade on the web for about $100), provides a very stable platform. This telescope is easier to set-up and use than the other larger SC telescopes at the local star parties, especially including the gotos available these days. It is no problem seeing Cassini's divide, even in the light skies of the Los Angeles basin. If you can pick up these telescopes nice and cheap, don't miss them.

Celestron C5
I have the C5 spotting scope on a Bogen tripod and a Bogen mini-geared head. I have upgraded to a Lumicon diagonal, a 22mm Panoptic and 10mm Radian. This scope gives amazing views. At a recent star party, I was viewing M42 through an AP Traveler. I asked the owner of the AP if he would like to see the same object in my scope. After about 10 seconds of silence, he said "That's a great eyepiece!" I guess it's hard to admit that a $600 scope can perform as well as a high end refractor costing over 3K. Absolutely the best price/performance ratio in a portable scope.

Celestron C5
Bought mine new in 1980, still use it, and believe it's an outstanding scope. I had a Unitron 4" refractor before the C5, and the C5 compared quite favorably.

Celestron C5
As you can see I love my 1970s orange tube C5 Classic!. Reviews at the time of its release emphasise the superb optical quality (considered better than C8s of the same era). My Classic C8 takes a while to set up for observing--with the C5 I can open the trunk, walk outside and view. For convenience there is no comparison... I also enjoy the fact that when mounted on the same tripod, the C5 optical tube is much steadier than the C8 which jostles about madly while trying to obtain critical focus...

Celestron C5
Just can't go wrong with the great little C-5. Fits the "Human Scale" perfectly. Also, people have gone 2" eyepiece crazy. My C-5 has .96 Kellners and Ortho's which are plenty big when you stop and consider that the average retina never exceeds1/4 Inches.Why so much glass?
