TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Brightness and contrast are good. Instajust is annoying and of limited usefulness. Better edge sharpness than the 22 Type 4. Eye position is fairly critical; furnished with a pupil guide like the Radians. Slightly longer and heavier than the 22 Type 4. Extremely convex field lens sits very close to the end of the barrel - don't sit this ep down on a rough surface or grab the bottom end. Wonderfully large fov. Field stop is visible if the Instajust is most of the way down (without glasses.)

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Excellent eyepiece. Much lighter than the 20mm Nageler. I did notice slight black out areas. However, only on evenings with a lot of sky glow or a full moon. Sharpness, clarity and contrast are very good. I really enjoy the 2" barrel and the adequate eye relief. I would like to see TeleVue make a non-instadjust version of this ep as well as other instadjust ep's in their lineup. I just don't like it. I always feel as if I going to drop it on the ground. Other than that, a great ep. Highly recommended.

Absolutely beautiful views in my 5" Mak Newt - I still have visions of the Swan Nebula using this eyepiece. Wide field views don't get any better than this!

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Love it. If I had to keep just one low power ep this would be it.
Very bright in my TV101 with an ecellent sharp to the edge field.
Does kidney bean if instajust no set right (especially with 2x big barlow), but even a newbie like me could get it right the firt time I tried.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
I just love this eyepiece. Very heavy. Exquisite views that compare to the awesome images possible with the 12mm Nagler T4. Works well with the Paracorr (Tuneable Top). Sharpness and contrast are excellent across its huge FOV. If you are choosing between the 22mm T4 and this one, choose this one.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Very sharp eyepiece with scopes faster than f/5 with a clear transparent field and the classic 'porthole' view. At f/3.75 it requires, and f/4.5 it benefits from the Paracorr to clean up the outer 1/3 of the field. The 22mm T4 is even worse in that the 17mm works fairly well at f/5 without Paracorr while the 22mm absolutely requires a Paracorr. One of these days I'll pick up a 12mm T4 and check it out as well. For those requiring or wanting the superb eye relief, good contrast, the huge field, and have a scope which can handle the mass of this heavy eyepiece, I don't think you can go wrong.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
What an eyepiece! Worth every penny of it's high price. On a f/10 SCT, just as sharp as any of my Panoptics, a huge apparent field of view and tons of contrast. I was never big on contrast, but this EP showed me what contrast really means. It makes all the difference in the world when viewing the planets - detail that sticks out like never before and the sky becomes instantly black.

The 17mm Nagler Type 4 is much sharper than the 16 Nagler Type 2. The Type 2 had "soft optics" and mediocre eye relief. The Type 4 wins in all categories....outstanding sharpeness, mega contrast, abundent eye relief and a huge apparent field of view (and you don't need to bury your eye into the EP to get it!) A slight amount of blackout off-axis though, so not for beginners. But not a problem by any margin.

This EP seemed to have the greatest weight to volume ratio of any EP I ever owned. It weighs twice as much than what you would think. The best Nagler ever.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Excellent eyepiece. Kidney beaning and black out are not a problem in a TV102, even without the instajust. Heavy, but quite compact. Contrast suprisingly good for a 7 element lens. Instajust is less of a nuisance than on radians because it is very stiff and operates over most all of the body of the lens. A better alternative for many to the 22mm Nagler Type 5

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
I sold my beloved 19mm Panoptic on the gamble that this Type 4 Nagler would provide slightly higher magnification while providing a larger FOV. I expected a slight improvement in contrast with the ability to better frame extended objects such as the Veil. Would kidney-beaning be an issue? Would the click-stop be a nusiance? Would it be worth the added cost even with the offset from the sale of the Panoptic? What about weight/balance issues?

I laid down my chips, stepped up to the table, and rolled the dice. A 7! I got all the positives and none of the negatives! Wonderful medium power EP on my 15" f/4.5 Dob prividing sharp images to within about 5% of the AFOV. This close to the edge of the field you have to have to really work to notice it by having the click-stop all the way down, eyeglasses off, and head cranked at an angle to even see it. Will a Parracorr eliminate it? Yes. Is it worth it? In my opinion, no. On my 7.1" f/6.2 Mak-Newt it provides a stunning 1.25* AFOV at 66x. Screw in a UHC (or O III), and I was completely surprised to see the best view of M42 I have ever seen at any aperature...period.

If you factor in all the performance parameters of the 17mm Nagler Type IV, it is indeed a truly great EP; worthy of replacing the venerable 19mm Panoptic. When you add an intangible such as the pleasure derived from it's use; it becomes a wise investment.

Clear skies, Mark Rieck

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
I've owned nearly every Nagler ever made (except the 11 Type 1 and 20 Type 2), and this one is a real jewel. Sharpness and contrast are excellent. Blackout areas are minimal (more than 9mm Nalger Type 1, less than 13mm Nagler Type 1.) There is some edge distortion (pin cushioning), but it is less offensive than in the Panoptics (perhaps because the apparent field is larger and the worst of the distortion is happening farther away from the primary area of interest (the center part of the field)).

Mine is a newer model after they stiffened up the InstaAdjust which is much nicer than the original loose type. If you pick one up on the used market (or already own) that has the loose InstaAdjust you can simply contact Televue to get a different slip ring which will correct the problem.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
This is a real gem. Fantastic contrast, much better than a 22mm or 27mm Panoptic, for examples. Bright, with good light transmission, regardless of number of elements. Better sharpness to the edge than the 22 Nag T4. Good for daylight use as well, unlike the 12 Nag T4 (unless you're a real steady head) Minimal black outs; not a problem for experienced users. FOV seems a bit less than 82 degrees, but not by much. Heavy. Stiff instajust in late models so not a problem to instajust haters. Seriously convex rear element too near base of 2" skirt; requires caution and good sense. However, just a dynamite lens and one of the best Naglers ever.

The review above is an accidental but true second review of the same lens from the same person due to the fact the 17mm Nag T4 has two entries on the site and I did not remember I had reviewed the lens priviously. I prefer that the above review stand and this comment and my earlier review be dropped if anyone ever edits this site.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Outstanding brightness and excellent resolution through the entire FOV on my 8" SCT and 8" Newtonian. Particularly nice complement for F/10 SCT due to nice balance of magnification and FOV--same as 24 mm Plossl but everything is bigger! I seldom change it out of either scope. Note, however, that you just have to switch to 2" eyepieces to use this on a Dobsonian mount: it's heavy!

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
Unlike the Nagler 12T4, This is a great EP! (you can read my Nagler 12T4 review if this comment doesn't make sense) It has the Nagler slight false color problem but is excellent in every other respect. It doesn't show coma in my f/5 scope. It is sharp across the FOV. Star are very tight pinpoints across the FOV (unlike the Nagler 12T4) and I think this is due to the lower power. There is no direct competitor to compare contrast and brightness directly. Both therefore are excellent. Fit and finish are top notch. And it is large enough to be used as a weapon should someone try to steal it!

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
I spent the cash and was I impressed. I have the new televue 5MM Type 6, a Pentax 7MM SMC-XL, an old televue 9MM without type, and this was too take up the gap between the 9MM and a Meade 24.5MM superwide. Not only did it take up the gap but I did not even bother with another eyepiece tonight. In a pure suburban environment, read light polluted, the 17MM held its own and then some. Bright, solid contrast and none of the funky wierd stuff like pin-cushions and kidney beans. The eyepiece was awesome on my 8 inch LX-200. You got to know how to position your eye and how to observe but if you do, you will like it. I have spent a lot of money on televue eye glass but have yet to be disappointed. Go Al Go!

Great ep. I don't have to expound a lot. Very good FOV with 12" SCT and 4" refractor. Very sharp to edge of field. Constrast is outstanding. Large ep and heavy. Highly recommended in this FL.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 17mm
I recieved the 17type4 as a gift, and was going to return it at first. Why??
1. Too big and heavy, all my other ep's were 1.25
2. I was a refractor nut before getting my Ceravolo, Naglers were too difficult to look through, not as sharp or bright as a good Plossl or Ortho, and overpriced.
Well, one look in my scope, and it was spared. Stars are points almost to very edge, very contrasty. I call it my "cluster eyepiece", I've had the best views of M11, the Double, and many other open clusters with this ep .Kidneybeaning is very mild, "Insta-adjust" eyeguard helps alot, but is too sloppy for a $400ep. Transmission not as good as my XL's, better than earlier Naglers.
