Excellent sound quality and seperation with no hiss. Great tuner, and the unit has lots of flexibility. Plenty of clean power to spare. The only reason I can't give it a 10 is the lousy remote.

_Wow_. This is my first receiver, and it could very well be my last for a long, long time. I have it hooked up to Atlantic Technology's Compact Theater 1 (with the 162PBM subwoofer), and the sound is excellent. Like the reviews say for all Onkyo products, the 656 has a tendency to get rather warm (especially with 5.1 streams), and the remote stinks, but with very little work, I was able to get this into my stack of A/V components without a problem. There are plenty of inputs, setting it up is a breeze, and the moment all the walls in your room/house shake as a grenade goes off in The Negotiator you'll realize that there is plenty of power. There aren't any problems at high volumes (at least as high as I've taken it), and everything sans the remote is excellent. If and when I replace this receiver, it will definitely be for another Onkyo. The 656 is amazing.

Unbeatable for the price IMHO. Superb sound in both surround and stereo. I tested Denons, Yamahas and Sonys and the Onkyo canes them all.

Lots of power and fully upgradeable with 5.1 pre inputs and outputs. Both the Pro-logic and DD are brilliant as well.

Asides from the pretty crappy remote, I have no hesitation in recomending this unit to anyone wanting a great all round amp for a/v and stereo.

I really like this receiver for the sound it produces in both music and movies. The sound separation is superb for movies and it is one of the few receivers out there that does well in both music and movies. It seems like most do one or the other well but not both. It is also pretty easy to use, standard big button Onkyo front. Little wheel selector ruins what could have been real easy to use. I haven't turned it up far enough to hear any distortion or hiss so I feel if I haven't gotton to that point it will never have any effect on me or most listeners at normal to above normal levels.

The only gripes I have are the little wheel thing that took the place of the number buttons I really hate and the terrible remote. If these two things were fixed I would easily rate this receiver a 10.

To all who are griping about the remote - buy the Marantz Mark II 2000. You'll be glad you did.

I love this receiver. I can upgrade to DTS when I want (have) to. I've turned the dial pretty loud (with my old speakers) but since I bought my Energy C-6's, I'm afraid if I turn it much past 1:00 o'clock, I'll break all my windows. Plenty of power, no hiss, no distortion.

As far as the remote goes, in my breif experience with recievers, this remote is no worse than the majority of them out there.

And the wheel in front may suck, but it works. How often do you actually control the receiver from the front panel. At least with this receiver, you can.

This receiver is AWESOME!

Connected to my linn speakers it did perform very well indeed. What annoys me is the fan that goes on and off, on and off... And of course the stinking ugly plastic remote... Anyhow i´ve tried the Yamaha DSP-A2 which i found not to have the same "oopmh" in the bass area.... This is a good buy.. Then aim for the H/K - Microsoft remote and you can throw the rest...

Being farely new to the home theater setup I was leary of what to buy but after spending hours on the net I decided on this receiver and I think I am a very lucky man! This receiver pushes my Energy Take 5 w/ 10" XL-Sub very nicely and it can produce bass tones that will resonate for miles. I've never had a setup before so the remote (who everyone complains about) doesn't seem that bad but I have nothing to compare it to. The fan however does bug me at times. It only happens with certain types of music. Loud rock like the Deftones, you can't hear it over the mayhem. Stuff like the latest Star Wars soundtrack for some reason doesn't kick the fan in at the low levels. Stuff like Portishead or that type of music really pumps the fan off and on. Then it's distracting.

Other then that great receiver and I'm definetly a Onkyo man now!

I love mine! I bought it a few weeks ago based on the ratings that I saw here, so I thought I'd add my own.

The sound is truly spectacular. However, the remote is poorly designed. On the whole, I don't really mind it, except for the fact that it can't learn many functions from my other remotes. Also, the special control buttons on the remote (designated DVD, TAPE, etc.) only control components that are connected to the receiver through a control line. I would have liked it more if these buttons were learnable. However, since the remote is replacable I'm still going to give the receiver full marks.

I bought this receiver in August of 99, and it has never shown me anything but the best performance . The clarity in the mid and highs and bass management is superb. My speakers are pretty good (Bi-amped AR9, AR2C center and AR428PS rear). I do believe if I do upgrade to a new receiver it will be a onkyo. I understand that many people seem to be dissappointed with the remote(pickup a Pronto there is nothing better)thats a given on all remotes. Note I do not have a subwoofer, but trust me when I say this "I do not need one the way this receiver runs". I have included a stereo power amp to it and have connected it to my woofer on my front AR speakers and the bass kicks on 2 speakers not just one. PERFECTION!!!!! You will know what I mean when you have seen U-571. ;)

This is one kickimus buttimus receiver! Be it it does have some annoying things like the remote and fan but they are minor. I believe this model has been replaced by the TX-DS747 and I've heard they have improved both, whether that is true or not is another thing.

Sound wise, it delivers. Both in clarity and bass. Lots of bass! An advantage over the Denon 2700 which is also a nice receiver but I could tell the delivery was not the same. This receiver fills my living room of 15'x 24' easily and I would think it could do a room 30-40% larger before a larger unit would be needed. I have not used the multi-room option but I'm glad I have it, nice feature.

It's also nice to know that Onkyo builds nice heavy, solid products that other companies in this price range can't (I won't mention any names:-)

Rock solid build, Power to spare. Dolby 5.1 maintains robust sound no matter how challanging the sound. Air Force One is better on the 656 than in the movies.
