JVC XV501-BK
I thought this was a decent player until I started getting freeze/lock-up/pixellation problems. Now it appears that about 10% of my DVD collection will not play through without a freeze/pixellation problem. I returned the unit to the JVC Service Center before the warranty expired, but it was returned as having 'no problem'. Right... DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE! Rest assured I'll never buy another JVC product and will advise my friends likewise.

Since I have been reading mostly complaints about this DVD player, I went to the JVC Website, and printed a reset procedure to correct any problems with ths player. EEPROM"
First:
Read the manual and reset "before use"
Obtain a DVD cleaning kit and clean it evey six months.
There are "lemons" in all crops"; to "find fault" before it is programmed, seems as though JVC is not a "favorite brand"
Let's program this player, obtain a DVD cleaning kit, and clean the lens every six months.

This is a follow up to my posting of the DVD Player.
Has anyone taken time to research what" EEPROM" is?
Well from all the "complaints" read here, I post a follow up, in which SEVERE folloup(on the web) was done.
EEPROM stands for Electronic Erasable Programmable Read only memory.
To me this indicates that when the DVD came out, the labeling was not handled properly; playing certain DVDs put this model out of sync.
"the fix" was to "reset" the EEPROM.
I do not know of any other DVD makers using this "chip" but to reset the player seems fair, in lieu of what the DVD box does not say.
Things have changed; the "labeling of DVDs is clear; I do not think the XV 501 is defective,
For this researchable reason, I would not recommend it to anyone who expets "plug and Play"
It has features NOT FOUND on many models.

I have had my JVC XV-501 BK for 15 months. The only problem I have ever had with mine is picture freezing and breakups due to dirty rental dvd's. I never realized that several fingerprints will render a dvd unplayable. I now clean every dvd I rent and virtually every one of them plays perfectly. I do come across a dvd every so often that will not play correctly. I wish there was a site for region 1 dvd complaints. That way I could find out if the problem is with the machine or a disk problem. I agree that JVC's customer service is nonexistent. I tried emailing them a dozen times when I first got my machine because there was no warranty card enclosed. I tried calling their 800 number and was always promptly disconnected. I finally gave up. I do like my player though and would purchase another JVC dvd player in the future.

I've had a few problems with my player locking after being used for extended periods of time. 90% of the problems can be fixed by reseting the unit. i.e. unplug, hold on screen+title buttons, plug back in release buttons and press enter key. Once the unit is reset it works perfectly. I've had mine for about 2 years now and I think I've reset it maybe 3 times. Although the manual says it will play CDRs it doesn't. For VCDs the only media type to use is silver layer CDRWs. It's a bit picky about the VCDs, but so far I haven't had too many problems. Oh and it only takes PAL formated VCDs. For those having graphics problems, most of that is the television set it's being played on. I haven't noticed any problems with my unit on my 27" JVC Television. All in all I have to give it a 9. I only paid $287 for it and I think it was well worth it.
