JVC XV501-BK
I bought my JVC XV501 from Crutchfield for $400. My first impression was
very good but this model definitely needs more testing. (I did not submit
any rating.)
I like the remote and many features of this player. The picture quality for
DVD disks looks good to me. Nonetheless, I found that the player has serious
glitches with my VideoCD's that worked fine on other players (SONY, PIONEER,
RCA, TOSHIBA). I exchanged my unit and then also played with one in a local
store but all three units I tested had exactly the same problems: there is some
zigzaging on high contrast contours and sloped lines, smoothly changing shades
(e.g. on people's faces) appear with horisontal lines, and "strobe" function
does not work properly (the 9 frames shown considerably overlap on the screen).
I am sure that there is some problem with the whole line and I hope that JVC
will fix it as soon as possible. My plan is to return my unit. I would
definitely keep it if I did not care about playing VideoCD's.

Yuri.

JVC XV501-BK
This player offers more than I expected!! Beside great sounds and effects, it provides some great stuffs as friendly on-screen menu, screen saver, digest (display 3x3 pictures of each chapter to choose), and zoom. The player does not have coaxial digital output but conecting optical output to my Denon AVR-2700 is great with Dolby Digital sound. Comparing to the current models on the market with its price range, it really deserve 10.

After 4 months I have to say that this unit is excellent. Have had no problems. Paid $385 at Abt Electronics (www.abtelectronics.com). Can highly recommend it. Has analog and optical digital audio outs and S-VHS and component video outs. The remote is easy enough to use.

I had one of these for a couple of weeks and took it back to the store as well. Picture and sound were very good, but in 3 weeks the unit locked up six times. I would be doing things on the remote and it would just stop taking input from either the remote or the front panel. My only solution was to unplug the unit. I don't know if this is a problem with my unit or the model as a whole. The store was out of those units, and just about all DVD players for that. I plan to buy a different model in a few weeks.

I bought my JVC XV-501BK DVD player about 2 months ago. I'm very happy with it but I have also noticed some problems.
I like the remote and the on screen menus. My Dolby Digital DVD's sound GREAT and my DTS music Cd's also sound great! However, this dvd player DOES NOT play DTS-DVD's properly. There are audio gaps that last about 1-2 seconds throughout every DTS-Movie that occur at least once every 10 minutes. I've yet to find a DTS-DVD that this doesn't happen on. I have researched this and have concluded that, without a doubt, it's definitely the DVD player. Not just mine, but ALL JVC XV-501BK Models. At this point I can live with the problem since I use DTS mostly for music. I hope JVC knows about this problem and attempts to correct it.

Great PLayer, looks expensive, performs like an expensive machine. The colors are absolutely jaw dropping and the sound is top notch. So far just watched 2 movies on it (Meet Joe Black and Rush Hour) and so far so good. Too bad it doesn't do Karaoke

JVC XV501-BK
Had it for about 2 months. I did notice the 1 sec sound gap in the DTS sound disc that happens between tracks. I didn't identify it as a problem but I guess it is. At the store, when I was testing the various DVD players out the XV-501 was locked up before I started to use it. The sales person didn't know what the problem was and just unpluged it. I just attributed it to it being on a long time. I can't play any CD-Rs in it even though the manual states that it takes CD-Rs. The manual also says it plays karioke. And I can't figure how all the speakers in the speaker indicator get turned on even though DTS or DD5.1 audio is going out of the optical ouput. But I really, really like the GUI interface for changing the audio and stuff. The zoom feature is neat as well as the digest feature that takes preview clips from every chapter on the disk and displays them onscreen for you to choose. I got it for $345 probably because someone didn't know what price to give it at the store. A few days later it went up to $400. I guess this player is just made for DVD movies.

JVC XV501-BK
I do like the features of the unit(screen saver, menu with video playing in 1/4 screen, component outs), however I've dealt with four of the units and they all have problems.
Unit 1,made march 99---Wouldn't play dvd's. Gave "region code error" although I'm region one and so are my disks. This one is getting fixed.
Unit 2,made december 98---demo at store. would eject disks instead of playing them. disks played fine in other brands of players.
Unit 3,made january 99---the replacement demo at the store. Was locked up when I went back to the store. wouldn't respond to any of it's buttons. When unplugged and replugged in it started working again.
Unit 4,made january 99---a loaner unit while my other(unit #1)is being worked on. After about an hour it will have serious pixellation problems, drop frames, chop up audio, and even freeze up.

When unit 1 comes back I'm giving it a marathon movie workout and if there are any more problems it goes back and I'm off to a new brand.

I purchased the DVD in April of 99 and have already had to return it for service. The unit will lock up as soon as I begin playing a DVD. When the unit locks up I get no response from any of the buttons except for the main power button. I am very pleased with the units sound and video quality. However a unit that has only played 10 or so movies should not be having problem this early. As soon as I get it back from service I will also put it through a movie marathon.

DOH! wally.dalsemi.com I think I know what your problem was. And you didn't have to turn it into the freaking JVC factory! Stupid JVCacmerica.com pisses me off because they don't return any email inquiries! Anyway, enough of my ranting. This is what happened with my player. If you try "Cruel Intentions" or any of the Tenchi Muyo box set DVDs they almost start. Whey you play them, they go to a black screen and just staying there forever. Or at least until you hit the power button. Anyway, what I did was set the damn parental control to level G and the code I entered was 0000. BAM!!! The player pops into action so fast you'd think you just offered it a blow job or something. Don't tell JVC; let them figure it out, the bastards. I don't know what the hell limp biscut brain cacheflow.insync.net was talking about.... Mpeg artifacts? I use component video out and there are absolutly no artifacts on the DVD's I get. I use the (video) noise reduction on my TV and the picture looks DAMN FINE! But I would reccommend getting a different player than this one because this unit will disapoint you if you use it for anything other than DVD movies. (see my review above) PHUC JVC!

JVC XV501-BK
Here is anther way to fix the player if the DVDs aren't playing (got this from DVDexpress. It seems kinda wak so I'd try my way above before doing this....

Listed here is a reset procedure to correct this Cruel Intentions issue on JVC players. Special thanks to Deborah Kac for providing this procedure.
This reset procedure, in most cases this will correct your lock up and reset your DVD player.
a. Make sure there is no disc on the tray.
b. While pressing the "On Screen" and "Title" keys on the DVD player
simultaneously, unplug the power cord and connect it back to the outlet.
c. "TEST JC3 or JC2" is displayed on the front panel.
d. Press "ENTER" key to start initialization of EEPROM. When indicator "RESUME" lights, initialization is complete.
e. Hit the power button and the unit should turn off hit it again to
turn it back on. (the reset procedure is complete and the DVD should be
working normally now.
As far as the Cruel Intentions problem, this would be the only reported disc to create this problem. (It also seems that after it is played it will cause other discs to react the same way.)

JVC XV501-BK
Some people will mention all kinds of problems and make them seem like they are absolutely detrimental to the system's performance. Others look at what they have and really don't nit-pick. I've got a great DVD player that does everything I expect. I've never experienced most of the complaints that some are having with the JVC. I don't doubt that they are occuring because I've seen them happen on a Sony, Panasonic and I'm sure they'll happen on a JVC. However, after 4 months, I can say that the player has produced a quality picture, great sound and a lot of fun. 99 times out of a hundred, you'll enjoy a care and hassle free night at the movies in the comfort of your own living room! The JVC XV501-BK does just what it's supposed to.....play DVDs. It also throws in a couple of really cool extras.

Enjoy it!

Robert

I played a cd-rw audio cd on it! Someone told me it had to do with the physics of the disks (phase and such). I tried to play a vcd that I copied onto a cd-rw but it didn't play. I don't know if was because the cd-rw disc brand or a bad copied vcd. I didn't have the original vcd to test it out but I tried one other original and it worked fine. Enjoy!

Great picture and sound when it works.
As others have told before, this unit began to lock up after about 10 uses.
I put in a movie and nothing happens. I can't eject, stop, play, etc., or anything except turn the power off and back on. Then I can eject the dvd.
Terrible factory testing, I must say, on this line.

I purchased the JVC 501-BK in April of 99 and returned it in August for the problem of locking up. Now in December of 99 I have had to return it again because it continuously ejects the DVD. I am thoroughly dissatisfied with the quality of the product. It looks as if JVC was in a hurry to promote the new product on the competitive market instead of running it through a movie marathon to fix all the fallacies. I have had a VCR for ten years that has not in the least bit given me any problems. I will plan to purchase a new unit other than JVC
