Hmmm - Conflicting reports are appearing about the AC-3 RF input on this receiver. Can anyone actually confirm/deny this?

Just took delivery of mine this evening. I have been going over the manual prior to setting up the unit (it is still in its box). The manual claims that at least on the Canadian version that you must have an external modulator box between the LD player and the coaix in.

Yamaha RX-V995
Is the remote the same as 'older' models as shown in prerelease brochure or did they go to 'new' style like the 795? Also what did you pay (Canadian/US)?

The remote is the older model with the ergonomic "fits-your-hand-like-a-two-by-four" styling and full length "break-me-off" door and was acquired for 1299 Canadian.

Yamaha RX-V995
This receiver is the replacement for last years RXV 992. It carries the same retail price ($999) as the RXV 992 but has 20 more watts per channel to yield 100 watts X 5 at fullbandwidth. It has a larger power supply than the RXV 992, slightly more filtering capacitance, DD, DTS, a more advanced DSP processor with adjustable parameters, 6 channel inputs and comes in black and gold like the DSP A1 and RXV 2095.

The RXV 995 can be had for only $799 and at this price, it is the barain of the year in which no other receiver at this price point offers it's performance or features. Email me if you want more details:

Yamaha RX-V995
I have had the unit since 12/31, and have been putting it through its paces.
First points of clarification: there is no RF out for a LD on the US model. Also, there is a phono input. It has 4 AV in on the back, all with s-video, 2 of which are full vcr loops. It has an additional AV input on the front, again with s-video. It also has one audio tape monitor loop, and a cd in. There are four optical ins (cd, dvd/ld, tape/md, tv/dbs, and 2 coax in (cd, dvd/ld) and one optical out (tape/md). It has a 6 vhannel input for future upgradibility and preouts for all channels, for hooking up added amps. All speaker connections support bannana plugs.
It decodes DTS in addition to DD and Pro Logic, and has additional DSP modes ( a total of 25), including enhanced versions of Pro Logic, DTS and DD. The parameters of each mode are fully modifiable (room size, delay, liveness, reverb, etc.) The dynamic range for DD can be adjusted, to provide a compressed version when you can't play it as loud as you want. A memory guard feature locks the parameters so they can't be adjusted by accident. The setup for the speakers is fully adjustable--with large and small settings for all speakers, and a no setting for center and separate sub. The sub cutoff is 90 db.
The unit has separate base, treble and balance knobs, a delightful throwback to egonomics, and a bass extension and a tone bypass. You can connect this to a unit in another room to control it, but unlike the 2095, there is no second remote for the seconr room.
The remote is the large learning remote that Yamaha uses, capable of supporting 13 macros (multiple functions.) The macro feature is real cool. It has a ton of buttons. What is especially nice is that you don't have to go through a whole slew of submenus to do basic functions. Some of the keys work differently when the hinged door is open or shut, and there are three layers of memory keys.
Performance: I have had absolutely no qualms about the performance of this unit. At 100 watts x 5, it plays PLENTY loud, without distortion. Sound is clean.
Everyone has a few nits to pick, and these are mine: he manual is usually clear, but there are several places it could stand improving. Eventually, you can figure out what they are saying, if not necessary why.
I would have liked a second audio tape loop, but I imagine that there are more than enough for most people. I would also have liked selectibility for the sub cutoff. 90 db is kind of high.
The FM reception seems better than on my old Pioneer receiver, but direct access tuning would be nice. The front panel has a very clean look, but at the expense of buttons for the surround modes and the inputs. (The remote, though does have direct inputs for both).
The remote is awesome, but potentially confusing. The number keys double as the surround selector, but only when the remote is set to "A" position; when set to B or C, you can use the keys for the components, but only one of the two that are selected. The remote is preset for Yamaha components, and many of those cannot be erased, even if you don't have those components, somewhat limiting the learning capability of the unit. Some of the keys glow in the dark, but not for very long, and a lighted remote would have been nice.
This unit has limited video selectibility. it retains the video from the last av source, even when playing an audio only source; but does not allow you to select the video from one source while playing the audio from another. However, by connecting the av audio to an audio source, one could get around that, if one needed to for dubbing video tapes. Not a major problem.
Basically, the nits are mostly getting adjusted to another unit, but overall, it is more flexible and powerful than what I had before (Previously, I had hooked up a 35 watt Yamaha pro logic decoder to my 100 watt Pioneer Dolby surround (pre pro-logic) receiver. The DD is fantastic (I haven't tried out a DTS disc yet) and I really enjoy the receiver.

Yamaha RX-V995
Just got my 995 from Uncle's Stereo(www.unclestereo.com). Jimmy was a pleasure to work with(for more on that, see www.excelsis.com under mail order). Had been eagerly anticipating this unit because I had tried the RX-V795 and loved the sound and features, but wasn't enough umphh in the amp section to push ny 4ohm Legacy Classics. So now I own the RX-V995 and I can still occasionally "clip" the unit off with a couple of tracks, but this occurs rarely enough that I still feel that it is worth my $$$. I listen with tone controls "flat" with no bass extension(or Loudness compensation). I can't seem to tell any difference between the ohm settings on the rear of the unit. The track that really gets it is "Chitlins Con Carne" from the Stevie Ray Vaughn cd THE SKY IS CRYING. Must be some pretty low bass. Have watched 2 dvd movies already, and love it for this purpose. Had to drop the rating to a 9 simply because the amp still isn't quite stout enough for my Legacy Classics. I bought this unit knowing that if I encountered the aforementioned problem, the line level "Main Outs" will allow me to get an external amp. Would highly recommend this one. Especially with 8ohm speakers

Yamaha RX-V995
Right now I'm deceiding between the Yamaha RX-V995 and the Denon AVR-3200. I can find them both for about the same amount of money, they both have sufficent S-Video inputs and outputs and though the Denon lacks DTS then remote looks much better and more durable than the Yamaha remote, besides will DTS even take off anyways? Any comments or advice as to which store to buy at mwould be appreciated. Please e-mail me at DecoyBox@aol.com. Also if listing store, put the website address please. Much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Yamaha RX-V995
For the person on the fence between the 995 and the Denon 3200,

I haven't listened to the 995, but I have a lot of experience with both the 3200 and the 2095 and will likely upgrade to the latter. I've owned the 3200 for about 9 months and recently auditioned the 2095 at home for a month.

The 3200 is an excellent sounding unit, but in addition to having even better sound quality to my ears (it should for nearly twice the price), the 2095 seemed to solve a lot of the ergonomic gripes I have with the Denon. Since the 995 seems pretty similar ergonomically (probably identical in many respects), you may want to take a look at (1) my VERY LONG recent post in the 3200 section and (2) my comparison with the 3200 in the 2095 section.

You mentioned the remotes. Yes, the Yamaha remote is big, clunky and has that dreaded door, but I found it far more user-friendly than the Denon's. The Yamaha's is far more powerful and intelligently designed. And unless you frequently switch between every one of the DSP modes or if you want to put all your other remotes away, I found I didn't have to open the door that often. Basic transport controls are accessible with the door closed, and you can program a few of the empty macro buttons to, say, select a heavily used surround mode (like dolby/dts, movie theater 1 or moview theater 2).

I would not even think of using the Denon's remotes to operate my other devices. There is no way it's worth flipping those stupid switches back and forth to access the very limited number of programmable keys.

Yamaha RX-V995
Having just purchased a 995, I have these initial brief comments; (1)Very well featured both programatically and back panel wise. (2)Great remote once set up (albeit a nightmare to allocate 3 other remotes to this unit) but with that barn door of a cover, I can see my kids turning this device into two distinct parts within 6 months. (3)Good implementation of on screen menus and help.

But I guess the bottom line on this machine is the sound. Like most pseudo audiophiles, I strive for perfection within a budget of a couple o' thousand dollars. This is amp number 12 in 20 or so years and is the first one I can run flat and be wholly satisfied with the output. Mind you I am running four NHT's that tend to be a bit on the sharp side.

My advise is if you can afford the bucks and want all the bells and whistles as well as class A reproduction. Dont let anyone tell you that a Denon AVR-2700 or 3200 is a superior reproducer of music....there not!...I have owned both.

Yamaha RX-V995
Just upgraded to the 995 from a Denon AVR2700. First off, they are two very different sounding receivers. While i liked the more warm and mid-range sound of the Denon receiver, the Yamaha simply blows it away on clarity and power. I actually noticed details in music recordings that i hadn't on the Denon. I then ran the pre-outs of the Yamaha RXV995 to my ADCOM power amp,(which was used for the mains on the Denon also),and i had the same observations, the Yamaha seemed to pre-out more punch to the amp than the Denon did. My only gripe in sound quality with the Yamaha is that the mid-range and bass are slightly weaker than the Denon receiver. The Denon i could run flat and still got deep powerful bass, but the Yamaha i have to adjust the bass a click or so to the right. Now i do plan on a speaker change in the near future and this may also solve the problem as i will choose speakers that counter the brightness of the Yamaha, and also have great midrange response.
Inputs and outputs are plentiful on the 995, as well as digital (2 coaxial,4 toslink),inputs. The Denon only had 2 coax and one toslink. The 995 also has a toslink in and out for the tape loop, useful for mini-disc or dat recording.
I next tested the 995 on DD and DTS, and this is where the receiver really shines. The DVD soundtracks were reproduced with perfect clarity and impact. Dialogue was very clean and clear even during heavy action scenes. On DTS audio cd's i was blown away by the overall sound quality and i am now a staunch DTS advocate. I even think DTS sounds better than DD in some instances.
The remote is somewhat unique in itself, but that large flip door is just waiting to be broken off. I use a Sony RMAV2000 programmable remote which i like much better.
Overall, the Yamaha RXV995 is probably the best receiver you can buy for $1000.00, and even some more expensive ones!

Yamaha RX-V995
I got this unit from Good Guys for about $750 after talking them down a bit. Sweet amp! Before this I was considering replacing my JBL satellite+sub system, but now I got deep low SMOOTH bass that I never experienced with my Kenwood amp. The DSP modes are unreal!

The door on the remote seems flimsy and the documentation on programming macros is unclear. With a better remote, I would have given it a 10

Yamaha RX-V995
$750 from the Good Guys?! Is that a typo, or did you honestly get it for that
little (pre-tax)? Their normal price is $999, so I find that kind of hard to
believe. Hell, if I can really get it for that little from a local store
(WITH the Yamaha warranty), then screw mail ordering it! I REALLY want to
get this amp, but would still prefer to get a unit with a real warranty,
especially if I'm spending around $800 for it. (Yes, I realize that receivers
tend to not break down as much as something more mechanical like a CD player,
but still...) Please post your response here so all of us can benefit!
Thanks!

-Somebody who frequents the local Good Guys in San Diego, CA (Carmel Mtn.)

P.S. If that's not a typo, which store was it, and who did you deal with?

Yamaha RX-V995
I just replaced my Yamaha 992 about 3 weeks ago with this year’s model. Sounds a lot bigger and clearer than the 992. They added and additional 3 toslink and DTS processor. Power is 100 watts to all speakers.
Current running Kef Q55 as my mains, Kef Q30 as my rears, Kef C100 for my center and a Cambridge Soundworks power subwoofer 2. The 995 in my Opinion is lot smoother with the bass response than the 992.

The Dolby Digital is outstanding. No hiss when turning up the volume and smooth transfer of sound in the rear Effect speakers. I bought a DTS encoded CD but I don’t have a DTS ready DVD player. Just for fun I Tried playing it in my DVD player and did get DTS playback through the receiver. The red DTS light showed up on the display panel. This also worked when I played it though my CD player (which is also digitally connected). I can’t wait for some DTS encoded DVDs. Yamaha also made some improvements with their DSP functions in giving the user some control over the settings. I will agree that the remote was
Downgraded from last year.

The 992’s remote had a self luminating buttons, which was replaced with glow-In-the-darks. The is pretty
Flexible once you get it setup correctly. The other things I miss was the ability to add a 2nd center speaker.
This was replaced with the out board inbound processor.

For the money the 995 has everything you could want and more. There is no finer system to be had for under a grand. Best warrantee price I’ve seen was $850 at J&R Musicworld. You have to buy direct they won’t ship it. According to Yamaha they won’t warrantee it if it is not shipped by them.

Side note – please look at the reviews for the 992, most of the complaints made on this unit were addressed in creating the 995.
