Yamaha RX-V995
I had a Yamaha RX V870 and it was stolen. I was wondering which of the
new models will be equivalent replacement : The RX V995 or RX V775
I have to argue with my insurance company so a good advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ron. A.

I had trouble with audio droping uot during DTS playback so I returned the unit. I thought it was a faulty Toshiba DVD player, but after also trying a Sony, I realized the problem was with the receiver. Other than that problem the sound was excelent.

Good budget price (which to be fair gives it a benign rating I guess) but I'm personaly disappointed. Good HT punch butin stereo mode everything breaks down. Music is harsh and brittle and separation is poor. If you want loud bang when watching movies this is adequate but stay away otherwise.

Yamaha RX-V995
I got one of these bad boys for $529 (+ $15.50 S/H, no CA Tax), and I've got to say that Yamaha knows what they are doing when they manufacture products.

My initial response is that the RX-V995 handles DD-5.1 & DTS DVD's with exceptional detail, dynamic impact, w/crystal clear highs, seamless surround ambience and discrete effects!! (sampled "The Bug's Life; Mystery Men; Star Trek - 1st Contact; Tomorrow Never Dies/SE; and the DTS version "The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over") With all DVD's, the 3D-like separation, shimmering airy highs and sub-sonic impact reflects Yamaha's justification to charge the original MSRP $999!!

The Features that I really liked in the RX-V995, that was not in the budget Yamaha R-V905/RX-V595;
1) Light Volume Knob Indicator (Red Dot)
2) On-screen display
3) S-Video Inputs
4) More buttons (Unit & Remote)
5) More DSP modes

For a professional performance and feature evaluation review, see Etown's June 15, 1999 "REVIEW / Yamaha RX-V995 audio/video receiver, $999 list) @ http://community.etown.com/buy/theater/avrec/articles/yamaharxv995lua.html

Highly recommended, and especially so if you can get one for 47% off MSRP! :)

Yamaha RX-V995
After reading most all of the comments here I decided to buy the RX-V995. I wanted a home theater system but didn't want to part with my higher end separated but was sick of my bare bones Bryston pre with no remote!!! The Yamaha has all the features and was very reasonably priced. For general home theater it is more than satisfying. The big let down was the 2 channel performance. I expected that using the pre-outs to my Bryston 4B's would not impact the sound quality much... I was wrong. My old Bryston preamp kicks the Yamaha in the ass on 2 channel audio. The Yamaha was harsh in the high to mids and lacked definition and bass response. Depth of field... what depth of field. There was little soundstage and instruments seemed to all come directly from the speakers. Switching the 2 in and out on the same recording REALLY reveals the shortcomings.

Granted I did not expect a reciever that cost $500 less than my preamp alone to perform the same but I was disappointed none the less.

As far as low end audio I think it holds it's own against it's competition expecially for theatre applications but if you are going to use this for 2 channel audio and are used to a quality system of separates then you will not be impressed.

Yamaha RX-V995
JUST BOUGHT MINE LAST MONTH. LOVE THE UNIT TO DEATH, BUT WHAT'S WITH THE MONSTER REMOTE CONTROL? I UNDERSTAND THAT YAMAHA HAS A NEWLY DESIGNED REMOTE THEY USE FOR THEIR NEW RX-V1 FLAGSHIP UNIT AND IT WILL FUNCTION WITH THE RX-V995 WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A COUPLE FUNCTIONS AND DSP'S THAT THE RX-V995 DOENS'T HAVE ANYWAY. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN IT IS A MORE ERGONOMIC AND PRACTICAL DESIGN AND THEY ARE SELLING IT FOR AROUND $150.00 AS A "REPLACEMENT PART". IN OTHER WORDS, YOU WILL JUST GET A REMOTE CONTROL AND NO MANUAL TO GO ALONG WITH IT. BUMMER!!!

Good sounding. Lots of sound processing but only a few are useful. The DD and D Pro Logic Enhanced are best. Remote is good but I tend to use the Aux on my satellite dish remote. Wish it would change input source.
