I have been a member since June 2000 and I have seen about 300 DVD movies since then. However, I have to fully agree with one of the previous comments: "Delivery of DVD's has deteriorated significantly over the past month. DVD's are not promptly acknowedged as recieved. Worse yet, DVD's are stuck in "Released to Ship" Status for days and days without shipping." Since December 2000, the service has gone very quickly from excellent to bad to worse to awful. Here is why: 1) it takes more than a week to get a new movie (better get used to this "Released to Ship" message). Last summer, 3-4 days was a standard turn-around time for a movie 2) Every movie is "Out of Stock" all the time. Don't even dream about renting a newly released DVD until 2003 - if even then. I have over 300 old movies on my list which I want to see again on DVD. A month ago, they were all available. Now 75% of those movies are "Out of Stock" - even the movies from 80's and early 90's.
Soon driving to Blockbuster in the next county is cheaper and faster than using Netflix.

When I joined 1 year ago, their service was excellent. You could watch a movie on the weekend, drop it in the mailbox on Monday, then have new movies by the next week.

Now it takes at least 10 days, and sometimes much longer to turn around movies. They are no longer the great deal they used to be, and if I can find an equivalent service, I will go elsewhere. The "out-of-stock" problem has also become a real issue. Of my current queue of 30, over half are out of stock.

What a shame this excellent service has gone downhill so fast.

I've rented 52 movies from them in the last 6 months, which has worked out to $2.70 per movie, with no late fees! CAN'T RECOMMEND THEM HIGHLY ENOUGH!

Getting more expensive, service getting poorer, and other better alternatives around like Blockbusters $30 for 30 movies. These guys get a ZERO from me.

NetFlix service has degraded severely since I joined last year. I've rented over 70 or so movies from them, but I've dropped their service last week because of their consistent "Out of Stock" problem. I didn't like waiting weeks on end to see new releases and I really didn't want to spend all my time watching what was in their vault of older DVDs. So, I signed off and went to their competitor, RentMyDVD.com who seems to have their act together. NetFlix has fallen to complacency, it's too bad because they were once a really great place to rent from.

Netflix used to be very good. The last 3-4 months have been terrible:
Most movies are out of stock, turnaround time used to be about 5 days
for me, now its 9-10 days. I have been a member since Feb 2000 but am now
going to give RentMyDVD a try.

For 19.95 you get 3 rentals out at a time. That's not too bad. What is bad, is that they don't have anything in stock! I have 16 movies currently on my list, 12 of them are listed as "long wait". Long wait means I won't get them for 1-3 MONTHS! Sorry, that's not good enough for me. Plus the lengthy turn around time (5-8 days)... I think I'm going to try rentmydvd.com

I agree with most of the previous statements. Service was wonderful when I joined in June of 2000, but by November & December service & selection took a quick downtown. It takes at least a week to get a movie after they say it has been shipped & another week 2 send one back (on the east coast or NC, at least). I've sent 2 or 3 emails (the only way to reach them) complaining but haven't gotten an admission of the problem or a solution. Another plant on the east coast might help. If anyone knows of another service, I'd love 2 check it out!

Netflix sucks I returned 3 Dvd's they claimed they never recieved them and they want to charge me for them even though it say's you will not be responsible for lost dvd's and also all of the new releases are out of stock I waited over two months after the release date to finally receive one.

I just started with Netflix, and see that it may be a problem. I live 5 mailing days away from them so turnaround time is very slow. I received my first three dvds five days after ordering. I returned them all two days later, and now, 6 days after I mailed them, they say they haven't gotten them back yet. At this rate, I'll only be able to get about 6 dvds a month--I'm not sure the $20 per month fee is worth it. I can rent 6 at Blockbuster for $18, and have them when I want them. The only real benefit is that I don't have to get in the car to get the dvds. I'm already rethinking my membership.

Netflix
Netflix will likely end up being the classic case of a company taking a great idea and executing it poorly (a la Xerox, Sony Betamax, Apple, etc). Look for more-ambitious and better-prepared competitors (RentMyDVD.com for now) to take Netflix's "dropped ball" and run with it.

Lately, they seem to be suffering growth problems (even after raising prices) based on DVD availability and shipping turnaround. Their most-glaring "fumble" continues to be the fact they have one distribution center... and it is in California! Not very convenient for a customer base that is heavily weighted in the eastern USA -- a obvious selling-point that RentMyDVD.com is flaunting. This does save on Netflix's bottom-line naturally, but they're sacrificing cusomter satisfaction for it.

I agree with many of these comments. Netflix used to be good. But they've gone downhill. I will cancel my account as soon as I am able to resolve my 6-DVDs-lost-in-the-mail problem.

Excellent homepage set up like Amazon. Gives lots of suggestions for other moview based on how you rate movies you have seen or movies you are renting. I can never think of a movie while I am in the video store, besides the new release I went in for that isn't there. But with NetFlix if someone at work mentions a good movie they saw this weekend I can go to my computer and put it into my rental que in lest than a minute. The down side is that I live in Boston and the turn-around time from thier California location is long. You also need to watch at least 5 movies a month to make the $19.95 monthy fee (for three movies out at a time; out means in the mail to you, in your possesion, or in the mail back to Netflix). Overall and excelent service if you live out west, but I live on the east coast and am going to look at RentMyDVD.com.

Very long to get DVDs if on east-coast.
Customer service not so great.

They 'hold-back' DVD shipments by claiming they never got it or saying they shipped it when they probably shipped the day after! Verified this by mailing two DVDs at same post-office and they claim to have got one in 2 days and the other 5 days later! Same way - two DVDs shipped same day by them arrive 3 days apart and sometimes as long as 5+ days after they claim to have mailed it. I live in Metropolitan NJ and do not experience any other postal delays or lost mail.

Out of stock for months on most of the top new releases. If you are interested in watching old movies, that is fine, otherwise, you will pay 24.95 a month and not seeing any new releases. I am canceling this month.

They start out great. When you are on a trial membership every title is available. Once you are a paying member all the popular new titles are on long wait or short wait. The turnaround times get slower and slower. I opened a second account under a different name and all the movies that were on my wait list were available to the new account. Customer service is a farce. Great idea put poor execution.

I've had so many movies either not available or lost in the mail (both ways) that I've cancelled my subscription.
The worse part is getting an email which tells you that because 5 discs have been reported lost (out of over a hundred rentals), they're putting you on probation...
As I don't believe my work mailroom steals DVDs (that would cost them their job pretty quickly), that leaves either the USPS or Netflix themselves.

Guys - time to change the red enveloppe for something more discreet.

As a trial member, service and delivery times were excellent. Only rarely would a title be out of stock. Then the slowdown began. Turnaround time eventually reached 10 to 14 days even though I kept the dvd for only a day befor returning it. I live on the east coast where transit time is 3 days one way by U S Postal Service. This was not due to any postal slowdown. Netflix's greed will doom a fine idea.
