Yamaha RX-V995
Great all around features and upgradability. Great sound, especially
for HT DD and DTS. Remote is not as bad as everyone says, although
it could be better.

Yamaha RX-V995
I'll be buying this in the next few days. This comment is for those looking for prices.
Uncle's (800-978-6253) quoted $799 + $26 shipping insured. They warrantee for 2 yrs and they'll pick up the unit
For those of you in the Chicago area, Abt Electronics(www.abtelectronics.com, they may do mailorder) is THE place to buy. They quoted me $750 + tax.
More in my review after I have bought it.

Yamaha RX-V995
I auditioned this receiver at a local dealer and I think it is great. It sounded pretty similar to the 2095(did not compare to the A1) and for the value I think it is well worth it. I bought a HK 65 at first and it sounded terrible so it went back. Needless to say, I will be ordering the Yamaha soon. Does anyone know if I order it from Uncles will it void the warrant???Thanks in advance, you can e-mail me at sheikh@uthscsa.edu

Yamaha RX-V995
This unit is excellent. My review is as follows:
Setup
Setup was a easy enough. The connections were all easy to make and understand. Altho binding posts are more secure than spring clips, it takes a bit longer to connect plain wire. But this is not a complaint unique to this unit. Unit setup was not too difficult. The manual was easy to understand, but it would have been easier to read if the two sections on settings were contiguous so you don't have to jump around. Also, setting the speaker volume with the test tone was annoying because it won't let you fix on a particular speaker. I used an audio meter so it would have been easiest for me if I could have fixed on the mains to set the balance, then fixed on the center to set its volume, then the rears, etc. The moving tone made this difficult and time consuming.

Audio
The audio was excellent. When people talk about subtle differences between one receiver and another they forget that many of those differences are not detectable to the human ear at normal listening levels. I think the sound is great. The digital movie experience is well worth the money ( I watched "Ronin" using the Adventure sound field). The unit detects the appropriate digital signal and remembers the last setting for a given source. Some may prefer that it be able to lock in a default setting for each source. But that's personal preference.

Remote
I've read all the complaints about the remote. I think it's fine. The macro feature allows me to turn on my TV and the receiver set to the appropriate function with one button. That's great. My only complaint is that section A cannot be reprogrammed. How many people have a Yamaha CD player? As for the door, I see that it's purpose is to make the remote appear simple. Once it has been programmed to suit your needs, it accomplishes that purpose.

Price
I compared this unit to the following: Yamaha RXV-795, not enough S-Video inputs (JVC has just introduced a S-VHS VCR that records S-VHS on standard VHS tape which may make S-VHS take off if the price is right.); Denon AVR-2700 and AVR-3200 which had no DTS or sound fields, and at $525 and $625 respectively are not even in the same league as the Yamaha, altho Denon's MSRP would indicate so (you get what you pay for); and HK's AVR-65, which may sound great, but with such poor quality control I wouldn't take a chance.
I paid $750 + $64 sales tax from a local (Chicago area) dealer who told me that since this is below Yamaha's floor price of $857, they could lose their dealership if Yamaha finds out. This is possible, but I don't believe it. Uncle's (www.unclestereo.com) quoted $799 + $26 S&H. But you don't get a factory warrantee from Uncle's. You have to ship back to them. With a factory warrantee you can take it to any factory authorized Yamaha dealer for service. I felt this insurance was worth a few extra dollars.
Anyone interested in the local dealer's name may email me at ellaryk@aol.com.

Yamaha RX-V995
i would give this reciever a 10 except for the fact that it has no rear sub- out.
But is does have full S-Video switching and DTS sound decoding in a sub one thousand dollar price. The amps sound beautiful and clean, all that you would expect in a Yamaha product. And there are also plenty of different sound fields to choose from.

Let me get this straight.... you pay $400 more than the V995 to have two extra speakers up in the front? Hello? Anyone home?

Yamaha RX-V995
Bought this unit from ABT Electronics for $867 ($857 + $10 shipping), which was BY FAR the best price I found.

Setup was easy, it took me longer to rearrange my furniture than it did to hook
everything up. The remote looks scary at first, but programming it is also pretty simple and straightforward. I'll probably still end up using 2 remotes,
because I don't want to be flipping the door open all the time to get at the
numeric pad underneath (for my satellite system).

I kept hearing rave reviews from everyone I spoke with, and I was not disappointed. The sound quality is excellent. It's amazing what a difference a good receiver can make. The DSP sounds great and really helps to enhance the sound to whatever it is that you are watching. This receiver also has enough power to fill up my living room, which is a BIG, open area in the front of the house.

Overall, a GREAT addition to any home theater, IMHO.

Yamaha RX-V995
I tried the RX-V 795 first which is a nice piece but is a tad bit brighter sounding. The 995 is a great piece. I paid $698 + 3 day shipping/cc fees = $750 at Costsheets.com This unit is from an authorized dealer with a full yamaha warranty. Remote is lacking but ok for me.

Yamaha RX-V995
Chose yamaha 995 over the sony50es because of additional input connections and external inputs for future formats. Both receivers sounded great. Thought I would need to keep my old yamaha amp to power 15yr old B&Ws, but it actually sounded better straight out of the new amp. Finished out with energy rvs rears and ac300 center. I love this system! The sony is probably easier to use/setup and the yamaha remote is not spectacular, but I got used to it in about 2 days.

Yamaha RX-V995
Okay, I'm convinced. After a few gruelling months of comparisons, I stumbled blindly upon this and the contest quickly ended. Now I just have to buy it. But where? I've found someone here in Manhattan that will come down from $1000 to $899. Didn't ask about a warranty, but since the store manager is on some board at Yamaha, I'm guessing yes. I want a warranty. Anyone know some place cheaper in New York City WITH warranty? Please contact me with any info. Thanks!

Yamaha RX-V995
A hell of a receiver!!I was really stunn by its' very clean and smooth sound, but had a "drop out" on a couple of movies with DTS. Still need to figure out if it was the receiver or the disk, other than that i'm really happy with it except my neighbors.

Yamaha RX-V995
File this under oddest-reason-to-choose-a-receiver:

I was on the fence between the 995 and a Denon, but went with the Denon because it had a slightly lower price point, and was recommended by the salesperson.

Took it home, set it up, twiddled with it and it sounded great. In addition to my 5.1 home theater speaker setup (all Klipsch), I have two additional speakers run out to the deck outside. I hooked up the patio speakers to the B speaker outputs and spent the next several minutes feeling stupid as I stared at the front panel and remote trying to figure out how to select the B speakers.

You cant.

According to the Yamaha manual, the B outs are for bi-wiring or SIMULTANEOUS second-room use only. I was not happy.

Went back to the retailer, bitched and moaned (and reminded the salesperson a couple of times how he represented the A/B capability on the Denon) and was able to move into the 995 for a small additional price bump.

I should have went with the 995 in the first place. It's sound to my ears is noticeable better than the Denon, it has 4 toslink inputs to the Denon's 1, and I like the remote better. I actually kinda like the yet-to-be-broken-off-door.

By the way, A/B/Both speaker selection is right on the front panel, and works beautifully.

I goofed on my previous post. It should have read:

Yamaha RX-V995
After much research and re-configuring the budget twice (Budget 1: DSP-A1, Budget 2: RX-V2095) I went with the Yamaha RX-V995. Let me just say, I've waited some months before posting this review, just trying to figure out all the quirks and guess what...I can't find any (well, I found one). This receiver is driving a set of Energy Take5's with an e:XL-S10 sub. My DVD player of choice is a Toshiba SD3109 (which recently replaced the newly firmware upgraded Panasonic A110) and I'm totally blown away by the incredible range of sound I get. I haven't had any problems with Yamaha's reputed "brightness" yet, even with the Energy set which is supposedly also very "bright". It sounds very smooth and neutral to me. I actually enjoy listening to some of my older analog Jazz (progressive/fusion) that I had forgotten about. There have been no problems with delayed auto signal selection and so far, I've never had any problems selecting another source *AFTER* I've played a DTS encoded disc. It changes automatically every time and takes lest than a second (I want to say milli-second, but I don't have anyway to back that up). I've heard no fan noise, no hum, no weird crackling noises, no audio dropouts (not even with dreaded Universal DTS/Yamaha problem), no tuner cross talk, nothing! Zero...Zilch...Nada!!!! I don't even mind the remote. I have a One For All Cinema7 Universal for everyday use so I don't even mind the limited RAM with the supplied Yamaha learning/universal remote (I'm still planning on purchasing the Philips Pronto at some point though), and I agree that the easily "soon to be broken folding door" is kinda cool.

The one problem I have found...when setting the levels, like many other receivers the level for the front L&R mains can only be changed with the balance control, not a separate level for each in the set-up mode (what's that all about!!!!!). I feel kinda cheated on that aspect and that aspect alone!!!

Just to confirm, with the US/Canada models, you will require an RF Demodulator for Laserdisc Dolby Digital Surround.

Otherwise, right now the Yamaha RX-V995 is the King of the Castle at Pap's Palace!!!
