I just bought this receiver from Circuit City after having Dolby Prologic Problems with bass redirection from center channel to mains on an Onkyo 747. The center channel carries roughly 80% of all the bass content since bass is normally mono.
If receivers must have subwoofers for any surround mode bass they should state REQUIRES SUBWOOFER(not included) on their product. Does the FTC have to start regulating the the setup of receivers in addition to the required FTC stated power ratings. Well of coarse, the JVC seems to be the same way. All speakers have settings large, small, none. In addition, it has a high pass crossover setting of either 80, 100, 120 . BUT GUESS WHAT, both speaker settings and the crossover only go into effect in DOLBY DIGITAL. There are NO other settings for speaker size in other surround modes including prologic and from the sound, it seems all speaker run only in full range or for the center, in wide setting. So if you have a small center speaker and no (NORMAL) small setting you MUST HAVE A SUBWOOFER to get the bass out of the center channel. I have e-mailed JVC on this problem and I will see if there is a reason for no bass redirection. If this is a defective device I will respond back on this receiver with a new review or solution to the problem. As it stands now, it looks as if this was the main design. In stereo mode this new design in amp circuit is awesome. A huge transformer, 2 * 12,000 ufd filter caps, a total shipping weight of 31lbs( felt much heavier). Also is high current design with recommended impedance for ALL speakers at once from 4 ohms to 16 ohms. In direct A/B comparision with Onkyo 747 which excelled in stereo performance, myself and the salesman couldn't tell the difference. He was completely shocked, himself, how good stereo sounded and stopped trying to push the Harmon Kardon on me after he realized how good the JVC sounded. Also the JVC was much heavier than the Onkyo 747 which states that the weight is 32 lbs. That makes the JVC stated 31 lbs more like 40 lbs. Now I will surely have to take it back because of shoddy surround engineering AGAIN!!!!! BEWARE of any receiver out there nowadays that has built in DD. They are taking major shortcuts in other areas to make these receivers affordable but in the long run are making them unusable.

Sounded great for about 5 days. Bass was a bit lacking, but it wasn't a huge problem. After 5 days of moderate to heavy use (AC-3), the unit began to overheat, tripping it's internal circuit. Let me tell you, it is no fun watching a movie when the sound click on and off as the unit overheats and cools off. What a RIB! I took it back and bought a Kenwood 1080VR.

I'm particularly not to hyped up about JVC Products, but when I saw the price I decided to give a try. Listened to it in stereo for about 5 minutes, and it sounded pretty decent. Then I put it on Dolby Digital, what the $*%& the surround performance was horrible, the ch. sep. and direction was decent, but hearing a low-level hum constantley got irritating. Also much like Sony Receivers this one heated up fast. But the main thing was that it kept tripping a protection circuit. It was also very annoying and weird since it wasn't in a closed cabinet. After keeping it at 10:30 for about 15 min. the protection circuit came on. The Sony at least has the decency to heat up slowly. Also what about dynamics? What happened to them all? Also for the Binding Posts? there are only 4 Pairs that are UL-Approved. And those are for the front. The Surrounds and the Center are generic light-duty 14-gauge binding posts.

I found this reciever @ wholesaleproducts.com for $370.00 For an AC3 unit you can't beat that. I was dissapointed though to find that I couldn't use my equalizer with it - as the unit has its own built in low/mid/high adjustable eq built in. An Extra (has 1)SVHS output in the rear would have been helpful too, although the SVH ins are great. The unit does heat up a bit but I don't find it to be a problem even in my enclosed stereo cabinet. U do need a POWERED SuB Woofer to get the base out of the unit too, but it's my understanding that with most AC3 receivers u need a Powered Sub. So Subtract another $200.00 from your wallet for that expense - although worth it-it Rocks. The reciever on the whole sounded good in both Stereo, Pro Logic, and Dolby Digital. The seperation in the surround modes was more than adiquate. I don't have an expensive receiver to compare so I was impressed with the rear speaker modes. The set up is a bit complicated but can be worked out with the help of the manual. On screen remote is handy too. All in all a good reciever for the $ and it looks good on the shelf with its various colors hi-lighting the display. Total with shipping cost me $390.00 from wholesaleproducts.com. Good guy there named Ron.

The JVC 884 Sounds Ok at moderate sound levels. However, I had the bass setup correctly but only got bass output when I turned it real loud (over 75 on a dial that only goes to 90). The bass really was kind of weak. Also, shortly after I turned it on, I could smell the receiver getting hot. What really bothered me though was the hiss in the rear speakers. My JVC was setup correctly and I've got decent JBL speakers that sound great with the Onkyo 535 that they are connected to. The specs of this reciever are really good, but with bass lacking, and the rear hiss audible during normal TV listening levels, I had to take it back.

I just ordered the Sony 925 - no S-Video, but it sounds great, looks great and it's got DTS. The JVC is quite a bit cheaper, but so is the quality.

I have had this unit for about and have had no problems at all. For speakers i have the Energy Take 5 w/ 10inch sub, sounds great. Sound City had the reciever for 299.99 plus shipping.

I bought this receiver about 3 weeks ago, at first I was kind of lost in the setup but after getting everything hooked up and set up correctly I am quite impressed with it. as for a hiss, yes that is correct but you can fix that quite easily if you switch the unit from it standard setting low resistance to the high resistance setting. As for lacking bass response..yes it does...even with my receiver connected to my beloved marantz tower speakers with 12"s I was still not impressed with the bass so I set the user adjustable eq to high in the bass region. yes bass management sucks in prologic but name me a receiver with as many features in the same price range that has good if any bass management features in pro logic..its an old saying you get what you payed for, and in my opinion, I got a warm running, good sounding, feature ladden receiver for the money. I felt good after a week of using the JVC, I would recommend this reciever to anyone that needs s-vhs switching, ac-3 and digital inputs at a decent price.

I think this receiver ranks high considering the price that you can get it for. Dolby Digital sound separation sounds great and defined. Never had problems as far as getting bass power since I'm using an amplified sub (Pinnacle Baby Boomer). As a matter of fact, I even have to tone down the sub especially when listening on stereo mode. What I don't like though is the absence of Bass and Treble controls, and the one-key bypass to listen in stereo mode - thereby making the controls feel like those mini hifi junks. Other that that, it's a perfect starter. Hey, what do you expect from a $300 receiver!
I would still highly recommend this one.
