My comments on this system are above. If there were a rating above a "10", I would have given it.

Please pardon my spelling error in the above post. This speaker system is the "Andromeda 3", not Adromeda. I left out the letter "n".

By the way I have sold (2) sets of Phase Linear Andromeda 3's (later renamed Phase 3) speaker systems this year (2000). I have (1) set left and am about to sell that one as well.

Thanks!

Phase Linear Adromeda-3
Greetings from Seattle,
My name is Dean and I worked in the Phase Linear service dept. for 7 years. Website at: www.hometown.aol.com/phasetek.

The Andromeda IIIs originally retailed for $1349. Name was later changed to Phase III because of a prior claim to the Andromeda name. A major redesigned occurred at serial # 1736. Went from 4 way to 5 way with changes to the MCM too. Sensitivity is low; about 88 dB SPL @ 1 watt as I recall. Dispersion is excellent.

There are a couple design problems to watch for.
-Bob Carver used rope calk to add mass to the 8" drivers which soaks into the dust cap and causes it to separate from the voice coil.
-The rings on the subwoofers cause them to sag over time which reduces output and increases distortion.

I have the OEM driver part numbers if anyone needs them. Email at: phasetek@aol.com.

Phase on,
Dean

The Andromeda IIIs are the greatest things I've ever heard.
My brother purchased these originally. He moved to a smallish apartment and sold them to me. He regrets it to this day. hehehe

Back in the late 70's I had the Andromeda III's along with a 700B amp and
4000 preamp. I was quite impressed with them, but I had the misfortune of hearing Magneplanar Tympanis in an "acoustically perfect" listening room at a high end dealer. Not long after that I blew a channel out of the 700B for the second time, and just got fed up and sold all my Phase equipment plus other pieces of my stereo. I more or less dropped out of the audio scene for more than twenty years. Just in the last few months I have gotten back into it and decided to see if I could find any Andromeda III's for sale anywhere. Well, I got VERY lucky. I found a guy about three hours away who had a set for sale. I went last Saturday (March 31) and got them. The guy had taken impeccable care of them. I brought them home, got them all set up and fired them up. WOW!!! How in the world did I ever let my original set go. These speakers are just wonderful. I'm powering them at the moment with a Harman Kardon AVR40...65 wpc. I now have my eye on a 700B and hope to get another 4000, too. Concerning the Magneplanars, my cousin ended up buying a pair of Tympanis, and even though they sounded really good in his living room, the sound just wasn't the same as in that "acoustically perfect" room. And if he wanted to trade his Tympanis for my Andromeda III's, I'd turn him down. No doubt about it.

I've owned, and loved, a pair of Phase (Andromeda) IIIs since 1979. All previous good comments I can happily second. My speakers were the store's floor models and had been a bit abused -I had to have one of the high-midrange drivers replaced. I use them in a surround set-up that has Dahlquist DQ-10s as the rear/side channel speakers. Other equipment in the system: Carver 4000t PreAmp, Hafler D-500 power-amp.
I did not get a user's manual when I bought the speakers and was never able to find one. I was able to get a Service Manual for the Phase IIIs. If any reader of this has a User's Manual and would like to swap a copy (xeroxed) of it for a copy of the Service Manual please contact me.
Good listening!, John C.

The rating on this speaker on the main page is listed as an "8". According to the reviews given the actual ratings listed are each a "10". How does this speaker rate an "8" when everyone who rated it gave it a "10"???? Comment only doesn't enter into the ratings chart so there should be a "10" rating or is my math really wrong???

I acquired an Andromeda III system from a co-worker, who was formerly employed at Phase Linear and acquired them new. (His wife said that they were just too big and finally had to go.) I don't deny that they sound quite good. They literally project a "wall of sound," particularly when listening to rock 'n' roll. They are awesome. I had to have one of the 8" woofers on one of the main panels reconed, due to it tearing while listening to Nillson's "Jump Into The Fire" at obscene volumes. (The paper was probably just suffering fatigue; I don't think the power hurt it. Around the Sound in Seattle did such an excellent job of reconing that I cannot distinguish from the original!!) Though I do have the complete system (3 pieces), I have substituted a Sunfire True Subwoofer Mk II for the original "bass commode" supplied. Sounds pretty good and offers additional flexibility. My only hesitation from giving these a "10"? They don't sound quite as "intimate" as I like when listening to certain types of jazz, e.g., anything Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue," or anything that was originally recorded at a small venue. For that type of sound, I believe that the combination of my pair of Spica Angelus (with low-end support from the Sunfire True Subwoofer Mk II) is hard to beat! But I'm not going to sell my Andromeda III's by any means!! I am using a Carver 4000t preamplifier along with a Carver M1.5t power amplifier, which is adequate for these, but a little more power would be nice. It still is enough to blow my son's friends away, especially when I put on some nice vinyl - most of them have never seen LP's, let alone realize they can sound so good.!! I have enjoyed the Andromeda III Loudspeaker System for nearly 22 years. I have found that the system is and may always be a reference system to all loudspeaker systems to come! The pair that I own are in mint condition and are sonically balanced (GOOD PARTS!)

My company repairs and manufactures the ribbons that were used in the famous Amazing Loudspeaker Systems. I will definately keep these units in my system for years to come!

I got my PL Andromeda III system about 25 years ago. I talked the dealer into taking $600 for his floor demos. Biamp'd them with a pair of PL 400 amps, one for the towers and one for the sub. PL 3000 preamp and the 5000 tuner. Two years ago I bought a set of MartinLogan Arieus, and sat the PL's in a spare bedroom. Now I'm going to bring them back out and see how they work in my home theater 5.1, etc. In 25 years of poking around in audio stores, I don't believe I've heard better sound. Mind you, I've heard lots of different sound, but none better. With the little "motion control module" turned up, the PL's could throw a soundstage right into your lap.

Phase Linear Adromeda-3
[Note: Vote moved from description by webmaster]

There is a lot to be said of a speaker system that is about 23 years old and can still perform with some of the best of today's systems. I have owned this system since new and to this day am still amazed at what it is capable of in terms of sheer presence and volume of clean, transparent sound quality. I have played with it over the years and repositioned a tweeter in each of the main panels to further open up the sound area in my listening room. Each panel contains 5 tweeters (four facing upward with diffusers and one facing forward), two 4" midrange (one firing forward, the other to the rear), and two 8" midbass drivers (both facing forward. The bass module contains 2 twelve in subs, one for each channel. The system is conservatively rated to handle 300 watts RMS per channel @ 8 ohms. The nominal impedance for the whole system is 6 ohms and my current amp. is pushing approximately 750 watts RMS into each channel without any problems. The sound from this system is "awesome." I know that there will be a few out there that are thinking I'm "living in the past" as far as sound quality goes. To that I will simply say that I have had many an audiophile, that has owned a system worth many, many times what I have in mine, listen to several types of music with me in my listening room. Each one has left the room not believing what he has just listened to. One person was even blindfolded and not told what the system was. He tried to guess and ended up thinking it was either a set of upper end Martin Logans working with an 15" to 18" sub which he wouldn't commit to naming, or simply a hybrid system put together by someone who knew good sound and correct placement of all the speakers in the room etc. Anyway, I've bragged enough. I just had to let the audio world know what can be achieved with some time, effort and a little knowledge of what good sound should be. I'm no genius and cerainly know that there are some extremely fine audio systems in today's marketplace. Money can almost buy perfectin in sound these days. But for what I have invested in this system over the years I can honestly say that I have never heard another high end system that, in reality, actually sounded any better. In bit and pieces, yes because I do know that the newer tweeters today will produce a slightly cleaner and sweeter sound. And believe it or not I am considering replacing all 10 tweeters shortly with one that I believe will accomplish just that. One other thing, with regards to bottom end. I have played several CD's that contain some very low bass. I'm talking in the sub 20hz range. My listening room has been "tuned" to the bass module and when one of these notes hits, it will make you feel like you are experiencing a subsonic earthquake inside of your body. (Actually scared one guy to where he got up and left the room.) I love to see the expressions on someone's face when a very low bass note comes sneaking into the room from out of nowhere and catches them totally off guard. That's my story on a system that probably only a handful of people will either remember or know about. If anyone else out there owns or has owned this system, I would love to hear from you. I have only run into one other person in all these years that owned it. I don't believe that there were very many made or sold as the old Phase Linear Corp. only sold them for slightly over a year or so. Eat your hearts out all of you with those "Six Figure Systems". At the same, enjoy that system because that's what it's all about no matter what the cost. If anyone is interested in discussing this system, please post a comment and I will list my email.

I've sent my old Phase Linear speakers to an in-law to store till I had time to set them up in the new home. As all owners of Andromeda speakers know, they are very fragile and hard to move. He has, for all intents, destroyed the speakers and I am forced to replace all of the speakers. Is there anyone who can help with replacement speakers for both the panels and subwoofer?

I purchased a set of Andromeda IIIs and Phase Linear 700 b amp and 4000 preamp for my Dance Studio the year they came out. I used them Mon- fri 4 to 5 hours per night until I blue a capacitor in one panel last year. I was and still miss the sound of my old system as does most of my students. I have had many people over the years listen to my system and most are amazed at the sound including a few real audio files.

I just discovered this site while trying to find a place to send my complete system to get it refurbished .

I own 1 set of Andromeda IIIs (2) 700B amps (1) 400 preAmp (1) 2000 preAmp and (1) 5000 tuner.
