No highs, weak bass, colored mids. Anemic amp section. 'Nuff said.

Are you sure you're voting for the correct unit? How can the SDP-EP9ES have an anemic amp section when it doesn't contain an amp section? It's a decoder, not a receiver.

Sony SDP-EP9ES
Actually I own a Sony SDP-EP90ES (it has an additional built-in MPEG-2 decoder, the Sony SDP-EP9ES has Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround only). It's an excellent Dolby Digital Decoder, capable of decoding Dolby Surround and MPEG-2 (not tested), too. The setup is very easy and it has plenty of digital inputs (3 optica, one coaxial, one optical output). There is a 6-channel analog input for bypass operation. The sound coming out of this unit's decoder is very transparent. It even has a digital volume control to adjust every channels volume independently from each other (you don't need the balance anymore). All you need is a good amp or receiver with a 6-channel analog input to hook up the Sony SDP-EP90ES. Only drawback: you can't power on this decoder using a remote control and it's building up quite a lot of heat.

As good as it gets for under 3 Grand, Natural, depth of soundfield, great features. The only weakness is BYPASS only analog

....The amp section is extremely weak since it doesn't have one.

Help wanted.


I have a Sony Digital surround processor in combination with a Pioneer DVD player , 3 mono amps from Marantz and a Poweramp from Electrocompaniet. My preamp is a Classé CP-4.
Now I have a great sound by playing DVD, from the Sony Digital surround Processor SDP-EP9ES.
The Problem is that this decoder has no analogue inputs. So I can not hear Dolby prologic from the TV or Video. The decoder can decode Dolby prologic.
Who can give me help or a hint so that I can use the Video and TV dolby surround broadcast through the Sony?.
Is there a Analogue-Digital converter?
Could I use a Dat recorder between it (analogue in and digital opticical out?)

Who in the world can help this Dutchmen desperately seeking for an answer?

Sony SDP-EP9ES
Baought this in conjunction with Sony GA8ES AV Receiver for $700AUD for the two. So far I have been using it as an off-board DAC for my Marantz CD63-Mk2 KI Sig as I am yet to purchase a DVD Player to use with it.

So far the performance has been perfect... each time I hear it I am dreaming of the day I can connect a decent Digital Video source to it.
