Yamaha RX-V2092
I've been shopping for months. I finally bought the Yamaha RX-V2092
I think it blows away the Onkyo TX-DS838's and the Denon AVR-3600 The Yamaha has a low end punch that neither the Onkyo or Denon can match. The amount of inputs (including S-Video) also beats both Denon and Onkyo. Just wish the Yamaha had an RF input.

What can I say but AWESOME sound!!!! I use this unit 98% for movies, very little for music. The tri-field Cinema DSP is excellent. The 2 front effects channels add amazing depth to the image. If you have not heard this unit yet, try it. With the front and rear effects speakers set up properly, you will be amazed. The sound is very clean and clear, even under Pro-logic. I agree with HTM in that it seems a bit weak in the low-bass dept., but a powered sub takes care of that. I tried a Denon AVR-3200 and Onkyo 939 but settled on this unit due to the great sound for movies. The one weakness: Few digital inputs. I have a DVD player, PCM CD interlink, and Laser disc player. I have to disconnect the LDP to listen to CDs throught the digital input. For that reason alone I am considering going up to the Yamaha DSP-A1. Rob (TritonSOG@aol.com)

Extraordinary dolby digital perormance, very good dolby pro-logic performace. Channel separation is very good with little or no dialogue leakage. Very believable soundstage on audio performance (in stereo).

Before I bought the A2092 I auditioned the Onkyo 838 and 939, Marantz SR880, HK AVR85 using the same two DVDs I brought along for the purpose - 'Outbreak' and 'Tina Turner Live in Amsterdam'

What finally got me to choose the Yahama was the Trifield DSP of Movie Theatre for the helicopter chase in 'Outbreak' and Tina's "Steamy Windows" in Rock Concert DSP. WOW!!

There is really no comparison between the Yamaha RXV 2092 and Denon AVR 3200. Read Home Theater magazine and even they say the Yamaha RXV 2092 is the best sounding receiver on the market and it outperforms the Denon AVR 3200.
The 3200 is not a far comparison for the 2092. You need to compare the Denon 3600 to the Yamaha 2092. In such a contest, they would be a stalemate.
The 2092 is an awesome unit that you probabely hooked up wrong or didn't know how to fully operate. It does not warrant a 7 rating.

This receiver beats the Denon by alot. The sound is better. The DSP Settings are alot better. and best of all it has a 7-Channel System. To all those people saying "7-Channels? it's a gimmic" it is definentley not a gimmic. This is a question to all those people, have you ever seen a movie with Dolby Digital in the theater and later seen that movie again but with both Dolby Digital and SDDS? than that explains it all. 7-Channels is a system very much like SDDS. Sony Dynamic Digital Sound is a method of mixing and matrixing a audio signal. it adds Effects channels for Front Left Center and Front Right. This gives 8-Channels. But since matrixing the Center Channel is alot harder and would cost alot more the yamaha system only has 7-Channels. The extra 2-channels add alot more realism and ambience (since adding ambience to the front channels will distort the Dialogue no ambience is added to the Front Channels. So Yamaha decided to add ambience to the Front F/X Channels. Bravo Yamaha)

p.s. Sony at this point is deciding on whether or not to include S.D.D.S. into their future AC-3 ES Equipment (not into the future DTS only AC-3)

This receiver is absolutely awesome. I can't rate it a 10 because I already have before. I just love it so much that I have to comment on it. Sound in 2 channel mode is fantastic. Dolby Digital is crystal clear. Plent of power. Cool backlit remote. This is alot of hardware.
For the money I paid ( $1099 shipped with a 2 year warranty) there is no competition !!!

First of all, please don't think I don't know what good sound is. My friend an I have about $20,000 worth of Audio equipment. You people must not have ears, because I can't imagine anyone saying the Yamaha RX-V2092 has good sound. My friend and I bought this unit from our local electronics store after hearing it there. We thought it sounded a tad bit edgy, but this store used BOSE speakers:(. When we brought it home we hooked it up to all our Hi-Fi gear. We were using my Jamo surround speakers at the time. We fired up an LD and were horrified by the harsh edge that almost shattered our eardrums. I actually did get some minor ear damage after testing and eventually had to go to the doctor at a later date. We then thougt that the problem was the speakers. So we exchanged my $450 Jamos for his $450 Sequerras. When we listened to an LD again. We heard a little improvement, but still nothing either of us wanted to hear for the $1700 we paid for it. Again, we switched his $450 Sequerras for his $2500 Sequerras. The sound was much more detailed, but the harshness of the sound did not go away! So we were lucky enough to have a nice electronics store that understood our delima. They gave us several other options and the 1st was the top Yamaha receiver, the Yamaha DSP-A3090. We took this model home and very sceptically hooked it up and put in an LD. Then a miracle happened, we heard sound that was super high quality, but with no harsh edge whatsoever. We were both amazed! I am very confident in saying that the DSP-A3090 is the best surround sound reciever Yamaha makes, and it is the only one I would buy.

This is a message to the idiot who gave this unit a rating of one.
First of all, you can't hook up a Laser disk player to this unit without an RF demodulator. That may be the problem you experienced.
Second of all you used crappy speakers. Bose do not a speaker make !!!
Third of all this unit got Receiver of the year award.
I owned this unit. Then I upgraded to the DSP A3090. The 3090 has better parameter adjustments, a little smoother or more natural sounding, but not as hard hitting. I finally upgraded to the Yamaha DSP A1 and love it.

For someone to rate this receiver of 1 they have to be emotionally challenged !!

Having owned both an RXV-2092 and a DSP-A1 (both excellent units) I would say that the above person who rated this unit a one must have had a defective product or was simply unable to correctly set up the unit. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they hooked up through a RF demodulator BEFORE running the line into the LD input, but... Look, I don't own $20 worth of HT equipment, but I do have ears. I have listened to my friend's Meridian 861 A/V controller, with ATI amp and Definitive BP-30 speakers. His multi $K system sounds very sweet and smooth. But you know what? We both agree that my DSP-A1 with full Definitive Tech. 2000 series sounds fantastic also, and for the price (you paid too much BTW) the RXV-2092 is an excellent alternative A/V unit for those who cannot spend a fortune on A/V equipment. Of course, I suppose it is possible that all of us--and the Audio mags reviews (see HTM Best A/V Rec. Award)--could just be deaf...and dumb. Don't slam what you don't understand. Read it before it is deleted folks. Sorry Web master, ire is a terrible thing.

Don't listen to the Sourpuss that rated this unit a 1. It is truely amazing for the price. My hat goes off to Yamaha.
I ugraded the 2092 to the DSP A1 WOW !!!
However, the 2092 represents a better value for the money. The way things are going now, I am not sure DTS will ever make it.

To the furious readers (I seem to be the only one here with this opinion):

    This is the person who gave this unit a 1 rating.  First of all, I would like to say that I had no intention of offending anyone.  Second, yes we did have the external RF demodulator for the LD player.  Third, we know that this receiver got the "Best of the Year" award, because we read the review!  We are not stupid people, and I hope that you did not infer that I thought you people were.  I just did not understand how anyone could like such bad sound.  Fourth, we read all kinds of opinions about audio gear.  We have subscriptions to the many magazines, including: Home Theater, Audio Advisor, The Absolute Sound, and Fi.  Plus we also get dozens of other informational brochures about audio equipment.  Finally, if you think that we only listen to super expensive equipment, then you are wrong.  I have a $500 Pioneer Dolby Pro Logic Receiver that was easier to listen to than this one!  Great sound doesn't have to cost a fortune.  We have heard $12,000 Martin Logan speakers that sounded terrible!
    Maybe we did have a defective unit, but this did not seem to be the case.  The sound of this unit was very detailed and realistic.  We listened to several different LD's (we did not have a DVD player at the time) in Dolby Pro Logic and Dobly Digital.  We were impressed with the spacious qualities of the Cinema DSP.  The front effect speaker channels added a lot of extra movement to the sound.  We heard things coming from those two channels that we had previously never heard.  One example of this was with "True Lies".  In the beginning, when Arnold is being chased by the men on skies and snowmobiles.  The gun fire seemed to be coming from all around the room, not just the front and rear.  Another good example of this were the wind sounds of the tornadoes in "Twister".  The scene when they are inside the mechanic shop, next to the drive-in, was very impressive.  Lots of very different sounds coming from every direction.  The sound of this receiver was big, bold, exciting, detailed, and realistic.  It was just that it was impossible to listen to because of the harshness of the sound.  The sound made us feel like someone was driving nails into our ears.
    If you think we are morons, then that is your opinion.  I just thought that this page's sole purpose was for expressing opinions!  It was our opinion that this receiver's sound had a harsh, shrill edge.  The rest of you seem to like the sound of this receiver.  I am glad that you are satisfied with your purchase, and I hope you enjoy it.  We were not satisfied with this receiver, and that is why we took it back.  This was just our opinion and I just wanted to let other people know what we thought.

You said some good things about this receiver. You also said you think it sounds harsh. Does that take away from all the other good things about it to warrant a rating of 1? I don't think so. Get some real speakers and then come back to rate this receiver.
The RXV 2092 is a great receiver and if you don't believe it, read what Home Theater magazine saya about it.

I have now had the Yamaha 2092 for over 6 months, all I can say is that this is an incredible receiver for the price. I considered the DSP 3090, but felt that the 2092 was a better value. I also decided not to go the DTS route (I hope this isnt a mistake).

I do consider the Yamaha 2092 to be a slightly bright receiver... match it with the wrong speakers/components and you will get very harsh sounds. I first auditioned the Yamaha 2092 with a combination of NHT SuperZeroes and SuperOnes - not a good combination... overly bright and fatiguing (I would not recommend using Kimber PBJ interconnects with the 2092 either). I threw in B&W 602 and 601s... ah much better. I find that the warmness of B&W 602s match the Yamaha 2092 very well.

The front effects speakers are fantastic, I love watching my DVDs in Movie Theater mode.

I can say that I have no regrets and am very happy with my purchase.

As for the person who rated the Yamaha 2092 a "1" I would have to say that is pretty harsh. But it does appear that you tried your best to match it with different speakers albeit unsucessfully. I guess I would have been disappointed too if I paid so much and got such miserable results. I hope you enjoy your 3090 as much as I enjoy my 2092...

A very good product despite my audio volume control (does not work half the time with the remote). But that's okay because I am now getting a 2095 out of the deal for $80.00 more, but the waiting is killing me! A little underpowered in the front end for my 4ohn Martin Logan Aerius speakers. So I ran the preamp outs to my 85/180 VTL Manley Signature Amps and that did the trick. Love that A/V
routing in one unit ala one remote and also the onscreen display. Would like to
see a more sophisticated remote with LCD display. Using Spica TC50's for
the rears and an Energy AC300 Center. So far the best music DVDs that I have heard are Clapton Unplugged and The Allman Brothers both of these can be compared to seeing these performances live, as far as the audio is concerned.
All in all a great value product, I think you get a better cost/feature ratio versus the Yamaha DSP-A1. I also hooked up the front effect speakers with some
Radio Shack Linaeums and found the Yamaha surround effects still good as ever.
I was an original owner of a Yamaha DSP1 wun with Hafler amps for the surround and effects and New York Audio lab Moscode 300 driving the mains. With the original M&K subwoofer, Synthesis speakers for the mains and Spicas TC50s for
the rears and surrounds.
