Sony STR-DA80ES
Unit works great....got it hooked up switching video/audio
for DSS,VCR,DVD player... works flawlessly. Sounds great too.
Got great DSP stuff for listening to music.

Only drawback is upgradability to something like DTS

otherwise great system for under 1k..

Sony STR-DA80ES
AC-3!! Incredible number of options and inputs.
I can't get the remote to learn. Some of the
user interface stuff is goofy, like essential
stuff that isn't on the remote. If you set it
to show radio station names but don't put one
in, it shows blanks rather than the number, how
dumb. It was a bit expensive for me too.

Run! Don't walk from this piece of... uh, gear. Sony is not what it used to be. I went through 3 of these things before I got one that didn't have some kind of defect. And they all sounded wimpy. Amps gotta be improved. Where's the bass? Let's not even talk about the price. Sony needs to look at what companies like Denon, Yamaha and Marantz are doing.

Amazing Dolby Digital Sound. More than enough A/V inputs for me. Integrates well with the rest of my gear.

Sony STR-DA80ES
Best reveiver I've owned !! And I've owned them all. I went through a Yamaha 992, a Denon 3200 and an Onkyo 747. Problems with all of them. The Onkyo was the best of those, but still not quite up to par. I finally settled on the Sony. The Sony is GREAT ! Very powerful and extremely versitle. A great sound when it is set up correctly. I like the EQ perameter settings. The DSP fields are well done. It is such a well built machine. Solid and heavy. I was a little bummed that the remote is the same as some of the lower models but it works great. I am going through Infinity RS-3 bookshelf speakers and the Infinity BU-2 12" subwoofer. A really full sound. No distortion, and no quirks. All the other receivers had a couple of quirks in them, like a noisey volume knob or a crackle when going into Dolby Digitl. Not the Sony. It is built too well.

First, musically. Very nice. Quite vocal. A good blend of mid-range. I sat and liseted to this unit compared to the Denon 3200 for an hour. I ended up with this one. It matches nicely with my speakers. Good punch and plenty of power. Again, the EQ features are great and make it quite flexible.

Second, Dolby Digital. Fantastic. Someone wrote in here, 'where's the bass?'. They must have forgotten to turn on the receiver !!! Such a full sound. GREAT channel seperation and the ability to EQ the rear channels is the best thing ever. I have been using the 3D Mulit-Rear mode and when EQ'ed right, it really sounds stunning. Maybe not quite as crisp as the regular Dolby Digital mode, but it sounds A LOT like a movie theater.

I did get this unit for a great deal, $899, so for that $$$ it is the best thing out there. So solid and nicely constructed. 5 year warrenty right out of the box. Sony knows they have built this thing well.

Bottom Line: Buy one !!!!!!

Sony STR-DA80ES
I completely Agree with inferno's comments!!!!!(above) I owned a yahmaha v793 and then upgraed to the Yahmaha 992. I thought those were pretty good systems until I went back to the Store and compared them to the Sony. I actually went into the store to buy the Dennon 3600. After several hours of listening to all three, the Sony came out ahead. The Yamaha had a harsh sound to it. It was between the dennon and the sony. The Dennon was 1300.00 and I could get the sony for an amazing 899.00. After comparing the two together, the Sony sounded just as good, had more features, better remote. I am running the system through polks and wow, when I got home, it was incredible. It is built extrememly well. and a five year warranty, how can you beat it. I also know inferno, and he is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to stereo equipment. dont take my word for it, take his!!!!!! 10 all the way baby!!!!

I am so disappointed with what Sony has done with the ES line. The things are built like tanks but sound SO harsh! How can a company that makes such good DVD players make such mediocre receivers? Power ratings are a bit generous as well.

great sound and power. The remote is a little annoying. I got it for a great price of $500 at Sony's outlet. Although refurbished, it carries the full warranty. No DTS, but I'm not sure that matters much anyway.

I sold an older model yamaha because it did not have dolby digital and purchased the da 80es and I like that it has lot of inputs such as optical and s-video but, I could never find a soundfield that could compare to my old Yamaha. I have had it for 5 years now and i am going to sell it and get me another yamaha!!
