I bought from them ONCE! and that was a few years back (at that time they operated under a different name, Wholesale Optics as I recall). What a disgusting experience. Once was more than enough for me. I wish there had been a service such as this back then. It would have saved me a lot of grief. I suspect the positive comments here are from AstrOptx buttboys. The negative experiences here truly out weight the positive by a long shot. Does that tell you anything? Heed the negative responses here people.

I can't say enough BAD things about this company! Bought a 9.25 OTA last November and the box looked like someone shoved a sword into it. Thank God the OTA was not damaged. Then just a few months ago, called to get a price on a 4" Celestron refractor, Fred told me 399.00 including shipping. Sent him a money order and weeks later still no scope. Called and he said what I sent him was for a 4" reflector not a refractor. Then I started questioning him about the order and Fred said he had another call and hung up on me! This guy is rude!

If he is the last telescope dealer on earth I would not buy from him. I would rather grind my own mirror, fabricate a tube and make my own drive system before I EVER bought anything from Astroptx again! STAY AWAY!!!

Wow! Thank you everyone for saving me from what appears to be a very large headache. While I wasn't planning on spending that much ($270.00 for a laser range finder), looks like the $30 extra it will cost me + local sales tax will be well worth it.

Do they still exist? Have had nothing but a busy signal for two days; put the fax machine on redial, and NOTHING for two days.

I give up trying to give him my money (so much for the bad economy!) -- from what i read here, I guess I'm lucky that I couldn't get through.

Well, what can you say, a one man operation, dealing with the entire world.
I know, I have been in his showroom about 50 times, and every time I have been, he asks me to get the phone for him that's only because he is helping 5 other people all at once.

I guess I am glad I didn't take the job, I don't think I could handle it any better.
Look, the guy is a little rough around the edges for customer service, but he has helped me make some serious purchases, inlcuding my 16" starfinder EQ, with a bunch of accessories.
He actually tried to talk me out of it, saying I would get tired of lugging it out of the garage all the time.
I told him I had built an observatory, he said, here you go, enjoy.
He has been helpful in our observatory project for the local school, and out of work he is a very nice person to talk too.
Anyone who deals with wholesale purchasing, should know what they want, and just buy it.
If you have a problem with a bad product, you go to the proper authorities, internet fraud and crime is big, and no dealer wants to have that to deal with.
I'll bet any amount of money, that if you took any other dealer, and they had the amount of sales Fred has, they would have just as many complaints for some reason or another.
Oh, and if everyone here thinks Meade service is great, I been trying for 3 weeks to get through on the phone, and they have no e-mail address either for tech support.
So even big companies can suck...

Have ordered several items over several years. Mostly accessories...all were received on time and well packed. Only once was there a back order. Fred is always friendly on the phone, and answers my questions well. Why all the complaints? He is a wholesaler. You do not get personalized service from a wholesaler.
Last note: several of those in my club and friends have ordered from him...all I can say is he's batting a 12 out of 12 with them. If all those who bought from him were to vote on this site....he's have a 9+ rating for sure.If he is so bad...why is he in business and Pocano is out? Something to think about.

Whew! I cannot believe all that I have read so far, yet I do not doubt that these people have had bad experiences with this company. So far I have made 4 purchases from astroptx. In each instance the prices were great, delivery was on time, and the products were in great shape (eyepieces, filters, finders). The dude on the phone does seem a bit abrupt at times and very outspoken, but I don't care (I have talked to telemarketers who were much more displeasing to chat with). One time he spent a fair amount of time informing me about the pros and cons of various products (well, I was paying for the call). Also, once I decided to return some non-defective eyepieces because I decided to buy some better eyepieces instead. "No problem" he said. "Just send them back and we will make the adjustments on your visa", and that is exactly what he did. So there you have it, my experience with astroptx. From reading what others have said, maybe there is some kind of "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde" thing going on here - I dunno!?

This guy is a real piece of work. Very rude on the phone. Misled me about the delivery time and was not very nice when called on it. I don't want to give him my credit card number again, but might consider calling him to see if I can catch him on a bad day. He is so rude it is amusing, should become a Saturday night live skit.

I had such a fine experience with Astroptx and the genuinely humorous "guy on the other end of the phone" that I am truly astounded by some of the negative comments. The only complaint I have is that the line is always busy and you have to pick your times to call very carefully. But once through, the experience is delightful. The "guy" seems very knowledgeable. Went out of the way to acquire a part for me that is nearly impossible to get. Handled a few oddities of my particular order exactly right. As I say, I'm astounded. He's a "funny guy" and perhaps humor and quick wit are not virtues in a telemarketer, but I sure appreciated it. Bravo! And one more honey-dripping word of praise: The prices are truly great. Astroptx is my "go-to" resource. I encourage everyone to give them a (second?) chance. Hoot Hendrix, very satisfied customer.

I bought a new ETX 90 from this place
in 1998 for over $600. I received a used and abused scope. Amateur astronomy suffers whenever a place such as this makes a sale.

Called him to order a first scope...a C11. He asked if I ever saw one before..I said NO.
He then instructed me to send for the brochures and go to a couple of star parties...and told me to call back after I did a bit more research on what their capabilities were and size to performance ratio was... Then he told me to call back after 6PM, and we could "chat" for awhile, while he answered my questions.
All told he took maybe 4 or 5 hours total time with me over several days before I finally realized that I should start with a 8" Dob with a targeting computer.
The man saved me a bunch of money...my back...and has been instrumental in keeping me in the hobby since...
I have refered 5 buddies to him and all say they had a great experience with him...it makes me wonder if most of the complaints here are not placed by the same person...
Buy from him...you won't regret it... he has great prices...and although rushed at times, he will take the time to talk to you if you are polite and patient and willing to call back during less than peak hours. Don't believe all the negative bull...its exactly that....BULL!!!

Hey, this guy is a little rough around the edges, but he knows his business, his prices, his equipment and his customers. I have received nothing but great advice and service from him. He does debunk a lot of other sellers, internet and others. He saved me $100 in shipping on a Meade 10" reflector over a California company that wanted to make money on the shipping! I'll buy from him first!

This business has great prices but I cannot find them listed with the Better Business Bureau. They seem to have two addresses which is confusing. Please use the www.bbb.org website.

I made two purchases from AstroPTX (a.k.a. Pauli's Wholesale Optics), including eyepieces, filters, and a CG-5 mount. Both orders were executed flawlessly and in a timely fashion. This guy has the lowest advertised prices I have been able to find on the web. In the case of many big ticket items like Go To scopes, the price is simply listed as "please call". It's really a shame he doesn't carry the TeleVue line, or I would have plced several more orders with him.

The AstroPTX website is a price list and nothing more. The website does not support online orders. Do your homework elesewhere and then drop buy for a reality check on the pricing.

Calling AstroPTX can be an exercise in patience. The phone line is usually busy. I have found that email questions are always answered, but it can take anywhere from 1-3 days. I've always spoken with the same guy, so this may be a one-man shop.

The guy I have dealt with on the phone has rather obvious New York City accent and mannerisms. Some may find this rude, but I didn't. He seems to be in a hurry (typical NYC mannerism), and yet he still takes the time to question you if he senses that you are ordering the wrong thing.

In summary, this is really a good place to call if you want to save some money and you have the patience to wait out a few busy signals. I often wonder how much I would have saved had I ordered my SCT here.

The owner, Pauley (who, btw, keeps changing the name of his business because of such a poor reputation), is the absolute worst person to deal with. It's no wonder this company has the worst vote record on Excelsis. Stay away!
