TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
Simply awesome for deep-sky work. But, there are trade-offs that may be important to some. I prefer the 22mm Panoptic in many cases. The Panoptic is lighter, has almost as much useable field, and is much sharper on-axis.

TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
This is one large eyepiece that provides a very sharp to the edge view. I wish I could use this eyepiece, but the eye relief is just a little to short for viewing the entire field with my glasses on.

TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
This is an outstanding eyepiece, but expensive. Yes, it's heavy, doesn't decrease usability for me; buddies with very smooth dob mounts have a problem, though. Images sharp to the edge, works well with 2" barlow and Paracorr.

TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
Wow! Awsome ep. It's a shame Al stopped making them. It's a shame not everyone can afford this ep. If you have never tried it, you don't know what you are missing. Superb deep sky ep. Barlows well. Enough said.

TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
Absolutely the best eyepiece I have ever used. As you can tell, it is my favorite eyepice. Awesome, bright, sharp to the edge views. The first time I ever used it on the Double Cluster, I gasped in astonishment. If you find one for sale on the Web, buy it, I guarantee you will not go wrong!

TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
I tried this one in my very fine (hand selected optics) C-8 from the 70's that was owned by a "then" Celestron employee. Having just purchased this scope last year, and being used to shorter F/R Newts, I felt a need to optimise my EP collection in the longer focal lengths. For my lowest power, I was lucky enough to get a used University Optics 7/70 (40mm, 2", 70 degree 7 element ep - (The U/O Mk70 has replaced this in their newer lineup), but needed something really good for the next step up in power, to a "gereral use ep". I got a "Mint" 20mm Nag from Astromart, thinking that would do it. I don't wear glasses, but none the less, found that it is impossible to see the entire field (even out of the corner of my eye) without moving both my eye and head around. The image was actually quite excellent, with minimal field curvature, and acceptable pincushion. Observing is not a job to me, it's just something I like to do (for over 40 years now), so the comfort factor is really important to me. - Make that "ease of use". While still owning the 20mm Nag, I got a 22mm Panoptic - Much easier to use, and very fine image to boot, with only slightly increased pincushion. - Eye relief on the 22mm Pan is still a "little tight" though for really comfortable use. Then I had the bright idea of ordering a new 27mm Pan while I still had the other two to compare to. The final verdict? - I kept the 27mm Pan, sold the 22mm Pan (as it was so close in F/L to the 27mm), sold the 20mm Nag, (as it was so close to the 27mm Pan in "true field", and was hard to use to boot), and bought a new 19mm Pan in order to have what I consider to be the best of all worlds:-) I miss my 20mm Nag, as I do most ep's that I sell, but the two Pan's more than make up for the loss. I'm of the opinion that more is not always better, and the main reason that the 82 degree Nag's even exist is to satisfy that "this is the biggest and best" mindset. I "need" wide true field to fit some objects, but a 50 degree ep gets pretty long in F/L before I get there. A 82 degree will fix that problem, but how do you see the edge without going "out of your way" to do so. I think that the middle ground of 60-70 degrees is just right. What sells is the most of anything, so I also think that all eyepiece designs would be better if they would cut back on the AF a bit. Think about how much smaller and lighter (and cheaper too) the 20mm Nagler would be just by cutting the field to 70 degrees! - Using the same lenses (but of smaller diameter) and the reduced field stop size, would result in a much easier to use, lighter ep, with longer eye relief too. But would it sell? - Likely not as well as the 82 degree overdone models. Radian, you say? Not the same thing at all; "Why" does it need a pupil guide. Type 4's? Never tried one, but they also have the pupil guide, and the edge performance is reported to be lacking compared to the older 20mm Nag. Nothing is perfect of course - The 20mm Nag is one of the very finest ep's ever made, but because of the "ease of use" factor, I can give it no more than a 8. Those of you that must wear eyeglasses because of astigmatism, run like hell! Hell - Sometimes I just feel like getting my money out of all these fancy eyepieces, and just using my Ultima's and Ortho's:-) Thanks for listening!

TeleVue Nagler Type 2 20mm
To the last guy! I think it is condecending to accuse people of being idiots, and buying eyepieces just because they are told to. I dont have the 20 type2, but my 22 type 4 is great. I also have panoptics, pentax xl's, kelners, ultimas, ect. If I could only keep one eyepiece it would be the nagler. The more I use it the better I like it. I dont use the pupil guide, and keep the instajust all the way down, and its a joy. It has plenty of eye relief, and a huge fov. After using the nagler, the panoptics, and xl's appear funnel like. I think of it as art and science, the pentax eyepieces are sharp, and allow alot of light through, they are science like. But the nagler is art. The view of large star clusters, and nebulas are awesome. I posted a review of the 30mm ultima, gave it a 9, but after the nagler I would hate to go back.

Well, I for one think the gentlemen two posts previous made alot of sense and was balanced; unlike the Richard who is obviously over reacting (which I think reenforces the prior gentlemen's comments even more). I mean, we're not talking about our first born here. The review was balanced, giving praise where he felt it was warranted, and asking legitimate questions about marketing and the desire to have the biggest and the most of something (don't recall seeing the word "idiot" either?). I agree 100%.

By the way (like the gentlemen two posts previous), I own many of Televue's eyepieces and like them very much. They do offer a unique view of the sky and I'm sure this has a lot to do with there success. But one has to question the fact that new versions seems to pop up every two years. Have you looked at an astronomy magazine lately? There are more ads than articles.

No, I think the gentlemen prior to Richard is wise and insightful and very balanced in his views. Perhaps we should all take a deep breath and remember we are talking about eyepieces and other types of astronomy equipment and maintain a more realistic perspective.
