Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
I bought this eyepiece for its huge field of view, and it delivered there, but it has some major problems. You can only see about 75 degrees, because the eye relief is so short, the eyepiece introduces coma into the view at about 60-65 degrees, and it appears to be made from a binocular eyepiece. Its a good deal at $40, but I sent it back, because I would rather have a smaller fov eyepiece with longer eye relief and better performance. If you want the cheapest 80 degree field eyepiece, then this is it, even though it has problems

I received two of these eyepieces included when I bought Sieberts Bino-viewer. I'm not too impressed. They give a sharp view right in the center of the field of vision but when moved your heart skips a beat 'cause you think a you've just discovered not one new comet but a whole swarm of them coming at you from the edges of the field! They came filthy and stay that way because the plastic bottom lens attracts dust and fabric hairs like crazy. They are definitly not for DSO work but would probably be satisfactory on planets.

I've been using this eyepiece for over a year and it's great! The views are clear to the edge. This and the Siebert 12mm are my favorites. I'd recommend these eyepieces to anyone.

THE 21MM HAS BEEN SUPERSEDED BY A NEW DESIGN WITH BETTER EDGE CLARITY AND ALL GLASS ELEMENTS. The first comment was true of the early models but has been superseded by the newer model.

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
Feb 4, 2001. I used the Harry Siebert new matched 21mm eyepieces that were included the Siebert Binoviewer [seen on EBAY for only $399 including the matched pair of 21mm SWAs] last night on my 17.5" 'fast' f = 4.1 Dobsonian. I was astonished -- very impressed, to say the least! The Siebert SWA 21mm eyepieces must have been improved (other reviews) because they were fantastic -- on the whole, IMO, every bit as good as using a pair of TeleVue Panoptic 19mm eyepieces in BinoViewer. This may be hard to believe, but I actually prefer the Siebert 21mm pair over 19mm Panoptics because of the annoying "blackout" problem with the Panoptics (the Panoptics are fussy about positioning the eye just right when looking into the eyepieces). Jupiter and the moon at 170X (1.15X Paracorr, 1.7X barlow inside Siebert BinoViewer and 21mm eyepieces) appeared equally sharp and detailed with the Harry Siebert 21mm and with the TeleVue eyepieces (HS 21mm SWA eyepieces produced a clear view to near the edge of the FOV while viewing the moon, I thought). Looking at the moon, the Siebert optics showed no false color, or the 'flare' seen with other optics I've used. Especially if cost is considered, Siebert is the obvious choice, even over TeleVue in this case. I just can't see spending several times more money for TeleVue EPs. IMO, the Siebert BinoViewer is recently much-improved too -- I did not see a difference in image quality from when I looked through a TeleVue BinoVue - that's saying a lot for H.S. optics.

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
I've ahd this EP for a few days and so far it looks very good. I must have a newer design than a couple of the other reviewers.Edge sharpness is good with only a slight drop off along the outer rim of the view even in my f4.5 10". Like other Siebert EPs there is no evident stray color and like the 15mm Jupiter shows nice color in the clouds.
The eyepiece is very rugged and seems to be a more refined design than Harry's earlier eyepieces. It just looks a little better.
I'll probably collect a complete set or Siebert eyepieces.

Nice and sharp almost to the edge. Works well with barlow. Good color nothing that shouldn't be there. Very bright field with lots of contrast espescially good in dark sky areas. Seems to be well made and pretty rugged. At this price you really can't go wrong

This was my first "upgrade" eyepiece and I am very pleased. Views are clear from the center out to the edge. It gives good contrast and is my current favorite, especially for the price. A very good value.

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
I bought this eyepiece about a month ago and waited to post until I had a chance to get used to it and view through other EP's like Naglers, etc.
What I have found is that I use this EP a lot as a big picture EP. My 32mm Plossel provides a bigger view but has less contrast and misses a lot of detail. I enjoy using this EP a lot but it is not pefect. For the price I would rate it a 10+ but eye relief vs. FOV makes the 85* technically accurate but not as you might wish. If you buy this EP don't expect 85* to be in view all at once like software programs Starry Night Pro show based on the numbers.
Don't be dissapointed either because what you wish for doesn't really exist for any price, for a given scope. I am greatful to Harry for providing this EP and wish he made a 32 to 40mm version. I only drop it to 9 from 10 because there is no threaded portion for filters. It DOES work with filters but it can be challenging to get it threaded straight.

Greatful to Harry for a great product,
Mike

Hmmm.....better than a Nagler? All of these "anonymous reviews" sound a bit like advertisements.

These EP's are definitely not as good as naglers. They show lots of field curvature, have poor contrast, and exhibit lots of ghosting.

Anyone who has ever used a nagler can clearly see the difference. I have yet to see a Siebert eyepiece of comparable quality.

Had this e.p. for exactly one year and it is excellent. very rugged, holds up well in dark, cold desert sites. Was my first Widefield e.p., and I was amazed. Sharp all the way to the edge. Optics are a little dark for city-viewing, but great for finding small fuzzies at a dark-sky site. A great "hidden-value" - 21mm for 80 degrees apparent field at $40!

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
Very sharp ep, almost to the edge of field in my Pronto and DGM OA-4.

Very crisp images. In shaprness and edge correction, the ep kills my Meade 26mm Super Plossl, is equal to my TV 20mm Plossl (but has 80*AFOV compared to 50), just as sharp and nearly as contrasty as my 18mm Radian, and much sharper than my Konig MK-70 25mm. Due to it's sharpness and contrast, it has replace the afformentioned ep's in the collection I actually use.

Looking at the ep, you'd never know it has such fine optics. A real steal!

It's too bad the initial run of these ep's had poor field lenses (see earliest reviews). It's these early reviews that are bringing the average rating down-- most people have rated them 9 or 10. The optics have long since been changed and are far superior to the early version.

It's a good eyepiece, but all that talk about 80-degree field doesn't make sense. The ep (the unit I have, late 2001) has ~23mm diameter field lens, which means that its afov can't be greater than ~65 degrees. Due to short eye relief, field that can be seen as a whole is even smaller - not more than ~50 degrees. No filter threads is not a plus too.

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
Hello,

I bought this, my first Harry Siebert, EP in Germany.
I'm use it with a 8" f/6 DOB and i'm very satisfied! This EP needs a lot of outfocus, I reaching nearly the end of my focusers way but it works. And it works great! Of course, some distortion at the rim of the mega FOV but more in the middle pinpoint stars and a really good look. I love it. The eye-relief is a little bit short, but no problem. Very good EP!

I have used this 21 mm eyepiece (bought 2003, series with filter threads) only once and resold it again.

The eye relief is, as stated on the webpage of Harry Siebert, quite short. When buying it, I did not think that this might be a problem, but it was to me, even that I wear no glasses.

I can't judge sharpness, as I did not use it long enough, but it seemed OK at an f/6 scope. The apparent field of view is stated to be 80° on the web page. This is definitely not the case. It is not larger than with any of the other Siebert Standard eyepieces, it is even slightly smaller than that of the 15 mm, I determined it to be 65° to 70°. So don't be dissapointed if you expect more field.

Harry Siebert Optics Standard 21mm
I bought an older version of this eyepiece recently (not threaded, a polmer body). I am impressed with it's light transmission, I had my best view of M-42 the other night with it, the nebulosity extending all the way across the field of view. On-axis it showed four stars of the Trapezium (71x). The edges of the field of view were distorted, but this could be only the coma of the fast scope (f/4.5). Views of the moon were spectacular. The eyepiece did show ghosting on Saturn and Mars, and certain eye positions caused slight but distinct doubling of Saturn's image. To see the entire field stop you have to really stick your eye close to the lens, uncomfortable for me to do for any length of time.

But for the price I paid used ($27) this is an "astronomical" value, the light transmission is tremendous and the quirks I can live with.

It's not flat edge to edge and I see pretty bright ghost drift across my view in the opposite direction of Jupiter's drift, but I gave it a 9 any way - even with the ghost, Jupiter stands out in a very dark sky, much darker than any of my plossls. Using this one with a power mate gives a nice high power wide field and has much better contrast than my Nagler 7mm.
