Someone, please help! Which company makes better Dolby Digital recievers, Sony or Yamaha? Anyone who can assist with my delima, please e-mail me at rburkes@clarksdale.com.

This receiver is an upgrade to last years model the RX-V 793. Since then, Yamaha has added DTS and 6 channel inputs. In addition, they added a slightly larger power supply to yield 5 more watts/ch and they added a new DSP processing complex that is superior to the RX-V 793. What is amazing is it has the same retail price of last year's model ($799) The only corner they cut was to put a scaled down remote in the package. I consider this no loss since you can buy the awesome backlit Marantz remote for about $100 or less.
The best thing about this receiver is it can be had for $599 !!!!
That is a whole lot of receiver for the money that no other company can match when the price/performance factor is an issue.

Whatever you do, avoid Andrew Kent !!!
I called him and he was very nasty. He basically hung up on me when he realized I wasn't ordering right away. In addition, he has no product knowledge.
I since then ordered a Yamaha RXV 2095 and speakers, not from him, with great sucess !!

This guy has less morals than a sleezy used car salesman.

This receiver retails for $799 but I got one for $599 !!!
At this price, it is a bargain.
It has 85 watts X 5 at full bandwidth not 1 KHz
It has DD,DTS and 6 channel inputs.
The sound is nothing short of fantastic.

I just purchased on of these receivers and I plan on returning it. The sound in DD mode is fantastic even with my old inexpensive speakers, however with only one S-video input(for a VCR which only allows for RCA audio, no optical or digital) I was unable to get it to work with all of my video components(VCR,DVD,DSS). I am considering buying the 2095 for all of the s-video inputs. I considered buying an s-video switch, but I would still be forced to RCA cables for the sound.I hate to spend the extra money(about $1000) specifically for this reason, but I want a receiver that will handle all of my components.

I called Unclestereo spoke to Carlos, real nice guy, ordered it on 1/4/99 and received on 1/7/99 in it's factory sealed carton which was placed in another box for safe shipping purposes,I appreciate that. I connected my TV/DSS and old but good pair of speakers, it really sounds great. I called Carlos again and ordered the Klipsch surround speaker set,hope to get it in a couple of days, once I setup the room size, sound fields ETC then I'll be able to better evaluate the unit. Remote will take some getting used to, component selection wheel is not lit, it is difficult to see the selection at nigth if you do not have an overhead light. For the price and performance I give a 10.

This receiver sounds great. I love all the DSP sound fields and the customising options. There's enough to play with for months. DD and DTS sounds fantastic. I'm currently rewatching my DVD's and keep finding sounds i never detected with Pro Logic.

The remote is poorly designed and basically worthless as a universal due to the stupid selector wheel.
If you plan on using the receiver for video switching then you should know that you can only use composite video for the DVD/LD.

Yamaha is a great company. And in my opinion is much better than Sony ES. The DSP Modes are much better, but that's nothing to dwell on. The DTS and DD modes sound much clearer than Sony. But the only thing I hate about both of them is that neither can decode a 96khz Signal. The only receiver I know that is capable of doing that is Denon's AVR-5700 but that's way too much. All you people out there stop being so bias and listen to a Yamaha receiver before you presume that since they make motorcycles they can't be good.

AT FIRST I BOUGHT THE YAMAHA 795 BUT WAS VERY DISPLEASED BY THE PERFORMANCE. IT DID NOT MEET MY EXPECTATIONS AND IT WAS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED FROM YAMAHA. I NOW OWN THE SONY 30ES RECEIVER AND AM VERY PLEASED WITH IT, HAS EVERYTHING THAT IS NEEDED AND MORE COMPARED TO THE 795, AND IN MY OPINION SOUNDS ALOT BETTER. BUT LISTEN FOR YOURSELVES.

I recently bought the 795 from Uncles for $619 delivered. Nothing comes close to the features and sound for the money. This is, however, my first surround system, so the fascination hasn't worn off yet. I'm using a pair of PSB Century 500i as the mains, Century 200i as the center channel, and a pair of Thiel CS1.2 as the surrounds. I can crank this setup louder than I can stand it and it's still crystal clear. I never listened to CDs through Dolby Pro Logic before, but I love it! I only have a few complaints so far. The lack of 5-way binding posts for the center and surrounds is a let down. I was under the impression the center channel is the most important speaker in a surround sound system. It and the mains, at the very least, should have 5-way connectors. Although I'm learning to use the remote more every day, I think it could have been better designed. The buttons are too small and unlit, and the wheel selector sucks--all complaints echoed by other buyers. Also, a "pop" occurs if I change TV channels while listening to the TV through the receiver. A small annoyance that can be worked around, but I don't think it should happen. All those things together make me want to give it an 8. I don't use the receiver for video switching, so that part doesn't bother me. I don't notice the spring clips now that she's set up, and if I had a learning remote it could easily rate a 10. Would I trade it in for something else in an equivalent price range? No way. Now I have a question. Many of Yamaha's receivers have both DD and DTS. Why the hell haven't they come out with a DVD that doesn't?

A nice sounding piece. I have tried the Sony 50es (Too Laid Back For Movies, but nice detail), the HK AVR65 (Poor QC, Mine Was DOA) Sony 925 (Decent for the Price But Poor QC- Blew Up after 24hrs of play). Sounds nice with my NHT 2.5 L/R Audiocenter-1, and 2 SZ rears. But craves more power. I am going with the RX-V 995. Yamaha's DSP are the best I've heard in this price range. Especially for Pro Logic. I tend to leave off the DSP on Dolby Digital or DTS as they sound fantastic as is.

SOMEONE, PLEASE HELP! I have big dilemma.I have decide to buy AV Receiver.
Right now, I`m deceiding between the Yamaha RX-V795 and the Sony STR-DB925.
I can find them both for about the same amount of money.
I haven`t listened RX-V795 neither STR-DB925, but I read a lot.I think that
Sony`s advantages is:
-multichannel parametric equaliser
-parameters for the position and relative height of the speakers and other
useful settings to get the sound just right (wall type,....)
I don`t know how those AV Receivers sounds in stereo mode (Hi-Fi) without
center and rear speakers.This is also important because I want use AV
Receiver in this mode.I love SOFT and CLEAR sound.Who`s the best in this
field, Sony or Yamaha?

P.S.I think that Sony gives more than Yamaha.Which speakers are
better for me ,Jamo series "classic" or B&W series "600"?

Disadvantages:
I gave it an 8 as when setting it up , one of the plastic clips for the center channel speaker broke. Bummer, but I had heard this was a weakness of the unit.
After 2 months , I still have problems locating settings on the remote. Its not very easy to use.
The lack of a DVD S-video has also been a problem as I don't get the TV setup screen to work with the DVD, only with VHS which I don't use much anymore.
Advantages:
Awesome sound
If I had to do it all over again , I would have bought the RXV-995 but I still don't have the extra $200 that would have taken.

You could think this note is a little bit higher but for my first amplifier I've found it great. Ther's enough power on each channel and the internal decoder do they job wel. I've just like a little more musicality from the amplifier...
