University Optics Konig MK-70 40mm
The first view of the half moon through my 8-inch F/6 dob convinced me that I has selected an excellent eyepiece. The eye relief was comfortable and the edge definition was better than expected. I did not notice any blackout effects. This and my 19 mm Panoptic are my favorite eyepieces. For only $200 it's a great deal.

I had real adventures getting an OIII filter for my
40mm UO MK 70. First I got the Meade 2" -- that's a no-no,
because Meade uses non-standard threads. Then I went for the
Thousand Oaks OIII. The UO was too large for it, I could literally
move it in and out without engaging the threads. The Lumicon
OIII fits! So I advise UO owners to pay the extra $15 and get
the Lumicon filter. I don't know why the industry hasn't bothered
to standardize.

Great just like the smaller 25mm mk-70 I have a 10f/9 scope and the 2-40mm is incredible? The widest possible fov in a 2inch focuser.I can see the whole 70FOV by moving my eye slightly around. I have 56X in my 10inch scope and the stars are pinpointed to the edge of the fov with no coma or astigmatism. I feel its as good as the pentax 40mm XL except the 40mm MK-70 does not have rubber eyeguards. Its only 1.5 pounds and a keeper. excellent on any wide deep-sky objects like the veil or the north american nebulae. Thanks jan telescope8@hotmail.com

Wide field of view, but only in the center. Edge of field sharpness is horrible, and the coatings are OK quality. Didn't compare to my TV 35
Panoptic, which I sold over a year ago. However, a decent price for this size eyepiece.

One of the drawbacks of the, otherwise excellent, MK-67 150mm mak-cass is that it has a small actual field of view (TFOV). I wanted to obtain a 1 degree or larger field of view. Advice from Mike Palermiti and Bill at ITE and assistance from the owner of University Optics led me to and helped me obtained a very slightly used MK-70 2 inch Konig eyepiece. My reaction to observations through this ocular with this telescope was "Wow!" The TFOV is large, 1.43 degrees. The images are bright; noticeably and significantly brighter in this "multi coated" Konig than in a "fully coated" 40mm plossl. Two galaxies barely and difficultly visible in the latter were easily noticeable in the former. The field does have curvature. In the MK67-MK70 combination, whereas the inner 1 degree of the 1.43 is completely flat; the outer .4 has curvature which increases as one nears the outside edge of the FOV; the effect being that stars flatten out. However, the area of the curvature is not noticed when one is looking into the eyepiece, straight-on. There is some kidney beaning but it does not appear when looking straight into the eyepiece or even when moving the eye around a bit.

Amazing eyepiece, with amazing clarity and pinpoint images with comfortable eye relief across a 2 inch piece of glass. It is by far my favorite eyepiece--I prefer to use the UO40 with a 4x powermate for moderate power work rather than an 1-1/4 Ultima or Radian.

Minor drawbacks: There is a small amount of color on very bright objects, particularly off axis (fyi: I am using a reflector telescope--not a refractor). There is also mild kidney beaning if your eye is off axis (nothing like the kidney beaning in a Nagler or Radian). It is relatively easy to unscrew the eyepiece assembly if you aren't careful when you remove a filter. The eyepiece also seems to require significantly more focuser out travel than my other eyepieces--I have to clamp it into the focuser with approx 1/2 inch between the flange on the eyepiece and the end of the focuser tube.

Major drawback: I wish they would put a rubber eye cup on these things--It is just a matter of time before I scratch my glasses on the metal eyepiece rim.

Value: All this for only $200. Quite possibly the best value in astronomy!

I have used it for one year now in my 8" f/6 Newton and I'm still satisfied. I have changed some eyepieces in the shorter range, but I surely never ever had the idea to change this gem to another widefield EP. It has the widest fieldstop for 2", so I get the biggest FOV (2.3°). The stars looking perfect sharp nearly up to the edge. Contrast and transmission are great and the WOW-feeling is still alive every time I put it in my focusser.
You are missing an eyecup, it's easy to make it yourself. Use the threaded top-cup and cut a hole in the plastic part, than plug in one of these winged eyeguards (I bought one for bigger EP's diameter 42 mm) an glue it. Now you have an eyecup with winged eyeguard and you are able to see the full FOV.

This Eyepiece is a real bargain, I would buy it again it's worth every cent (and more).

The stars at the very edge flair a little. Ive looked through other wide angle eyepieces, ok some have a wider feild of view, but to me there is a limit of what you can take in when viewing such a wide view, in my 10 inch f/6 newt, and 6 inch f/5 ach, close enough to what I consider perfect for that space walking feeling with excellent quality views at a affordable price. I really like this eyepice and so do all my observing buddies in all types and size telescopes.

Excellent views at a bargin price. Works well with my F5 Dob and my F7 ED refractor.
