nice binos.

Sharp over almost all of the field of view. Superb optics and easy to hold.

In another class to most asian made binos. Worth hunting down.

Hello all!

I consider myself an expirienced amateur astronomer – in that business around 15 years now.
When I could recommend a bino in the $ 200,- pricerange, this is the bino I can recommend without any hesitation. Although not produced any longer, this IS the bino for astronomy.
If you can get one at eBay or anywhere else, simply go for it.
But take care with purchases via eBay, because it´s that type of Porro designs, that is very durable, but not shock resistant and be sure, that it is well collimated.

The pros:

Widefield optics (72° apparent FOV)
Mechanically well built
10x50 is what I would consider the upper limit of handheld binocular astronomy
Well balanced
Fine mechanics
Beautiful made

The cons:
Overall on the heavy, bulky side
Distortion begins around 70% of FOV

The reason, why I recommend it is, that this glass is the “finder”, with its wide FOV it’s the ideal bino for scanning through the milky way or locate objects. Great contrast and sharp on axis. The Pleiades e.g. fit wonderful into the FOV, as well as the Andromeda Galaxy, h+chi Persei or other objects. It´s the bino, that “sounds”.

Compared to more modern or fashionable binos nowadays like Leica, Swarovski or Pentax – it uses of course the old technology, but has BaK4 prisms, if the production number is greater than 5.XXX.XXX, then you have the chance to get the multicoated optics, which provide better resistance against stray light and have better transmission, although – 4-5% more of transmission isn´t really noticeable. And if you are that lucky, me was when I got the “Docter” branded glasses, buy it. They are rarely to find, because most of the owners of them never sell, like me

Excellent hand holdable binoculars. Very very sharp and with lots of contrast over a wide field. Very comfortable to hold although tripod mounting would be good .
