Description:The destiny of the world rests with the decision of Kamui, a troubled young man with special power. He must choose the side of the Dragons of the Earth (a group that believes that humanity must be destroyed to purge the world) and the Dragons of Heaven (who want to preserve human life)... add to this burden the fact that his oldest childhood friend is destined to become his nemesis.

Based on an as yet unfinished manga series by CLAMP, this film is an attempt to package an epic story into 98 minutes of violent and dramatic storytelling.

X/1999 has its good points and its bad points.

Many critics claim that it is difficult for a person who has not read the original X/1999 manga to enjoy this film, but as this site proves, many people are very happy with what they see.. even if they know nothing about the Tokyo Babylon universe, CLAMP, the manga, TV series or even anime.

The art and animation is nice... if you like what you see in online screen-shots and the cover art then you shouldn't be disappointed.

The plot is (in my opinion) aimed at a masculine audience. When I saw this film it put me in mind of the old mindset of anime importers to english speaking countries: "Make it violent or sexy and people will be fascinated by these sensational and contraversial asian cartoons". To my mind this film choses violence and aggression over creative character development. I'd say it has little emotional resonance as a result, though a lot of that is as a result of trying to cram so much story into so little time. If you like fighting and blood in anime you may just love it.

Inappropriate for young audiences, this is a plot for older teenage and adult audiences. It contains supernatural themes, violence, an apocalyptic storyline and the deaths of many of the major characters. In my opinion? it could be depressing.. if you ever felt like you knew or could identify with any of them. Humour isn't really a feature in this production

The soundtrack was cool. Nice use of music, however if you want a 5.1 mix the Zone 1 and 4 release DVDs only have that for the English track. The Japanese track is in stereo only.

I felt that this film was 98 minutes of my life that I'm not getting back. I had already seen the TV series and that is a production that had more of the manga (still in production to this day) to base it on and basically a lot more time to go into character development. I have always got more pleasure from stories with emotional resonance than flashy fights and gore.

The film was not painful enough for me to want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon.. but not engaging enough for me to suffer a rewatch.

Ok, many dislike this anime, and in a way I can see why. The movie goes straight into it, the plot comes a little later on, so ur kinda confused as to what's going on at first. The plot is pretty naff, "u have to fight, ur only choice is who you'll fight for, the Earth or humanity". What kinda choice is that? Then, his best (childhood) friend must oppose him, unfair or what! Fuma develops into a truely evil being who kills everybody except 1, hmmm, who could that be? So even he dies. Ha. He deserved it. This anime is a real downer, however, it is beautifully animated with a wonderful tune at the end, 'Forever Love' (, if only it were translated so I could understand what was being said). So, worth a watch but not worth buying.

Mm... the movie prejudices people against Fuuma. Showing him as a complete evil bastard. Which works for me, but in the manga, Fuuma does have his soft side. He does what he does for a reason, even if nobody has the slightest clue as to what it is.

Superb animation, lousy adaptation of a exceptional manga.

BTW, you need to know the end of Tokyo Babylon to understand the reason behind what happened between Subaru and Soiichiro. In this film it's so fast it is over as soon as they show up in the screen. Most characters can barely say their names before getting blasted.

A criminal waste of a superb story.

X was the first CLAMP manga that I got heavily into. unfortunately, it was difficult for me to keep up with the english issues and then they started printing it in Animerica, which cheesed me off, cause I didn't want to buy the mag just to read small snippets of the manga there! (the only manga I would do that for would be Five Star Stories!) However, I was estatic when I heard a movie version was to be made. It did not dissapoint. The animation was absolutely breathtaking! Some of the best animation I have ever seen. (BETTER than akira, actually, despite some naysayers objections...X is not about hyper-detailed backgrounds, but Beautifully flowing ART) Yes, for those who are not privy to the plot of the manga, X can be a bit confusing. and yes, it was way too complex a story to fit into a two hour movie. (however, the Tv series this fall should fix that problem) but as a movie itself, it was close to perfection.
The only reason I didn't give this show a "9" is that it SHOULD HAVE BEEN A TV SERIES (10 is reserved for my all time fav, Dangaio...anything else is rated 1-9)

great visual movie. It was the first one i saw on the big screen. Man i wish more anime would make it to the theaters. anyways it was too short and too time constrained in a movie format. but good none the less.

X/1999 (Movie)
Truly a fantastic visual masterpiece! This is a film that has multiple replay value. The plot and it's execution is unlike any other anime. People may say that it's "too depressing." Well, I say that's FANTASTIC!. A truly original technique in anime. All too often I've seen where the good guys kill all the bad guys and have a wonderful bonding experience at the end as the sun comes shining thru the stormy clouds over Tokyo. Refreshingly, that doesn't happen in 'X.' In this film, you'll see very likeable characters get massacred. You'll see plot twists that you won't expect. All that and fantastic animation as well as a great soundtrack make 'X' one of the best anime around.

Very well-animated, but very few likable characters, a very very strange storyline, and extremely apocalyptic. Too depressing (well, except I didn't care too much about very many of the characters...).

How do you discribe X? Well, you either get the point or you don't...if you don't you probably won't enjoy the movie...but it's amazing, the art itself deserves a perfect 10. The whole story lets you choose. It doesn't say whose bad and whose not.
True, many may think that the Dragons of Earth are evil, but they are trying to save Earth (supposedly our home) and that Dragons of Heaven are good, but are they protecting us more for their own (sometimes maybe even selfish) reasons?
That is why this anime rocks, because it shows that heroes don't always live happily ever after and sacrifices aren't always made with selfless desires. Amazing... One question: Why do so many ppl dislike Kotori? (Yes I know she acts weird, but why do you hate her?)

The art was great, just like all of Clamps's works yet the movie was confusing and would have been more fitting as an OVA series for a better job could hae been done and the ending is the worst
