VIXEN VMC 200 L
I have owned several SCTs and this is by far better optically than those SCTs. The moon was excellent when viewed at 390x!!! Yes, those diffraction spikes can be bothersome at times, but the overall optical quality is excellent. Mine arrived with the collimation dead on. Focuser is smooth, takes 2" eps if you purchase the adapter. No image shift. Excellent 7x50 finder. Lightweight tube, easy to move around, has a nice handle. No dew problems!!! The GPDX is a perfect match. Do I sound satisfied or what?

VIXEN VMC 200 L
I purchased the VMC200L because I wanted to move to 8" after having had a 3,5" f/11 Refractor for 8 years. The scope was advertised here in Germany as being a good alternative to the SCT's in this area. After I had seen the scope a couple of times I was convinced that I would get more than an SCT especially as I already new the very good quality of japan made vixen products and didn't like the main mirror focussing on the SCTs. Since I live in the city it also had to be something portable. (Stowing a Dobson in our flat would be a NO GO for my wife :-))

Since I already had Vixen Super Polaris Mount (now GP) and a very robust tripod I purchased the O&T and a 7x50 finder scope for about 1300$.

Setting up the scope takes 5 minutes if you have done it a couple of times in your living room. The scope is very well mounted with the SP and gives great views on planets and deep sky. I have observed a number of small galaxies and nebulaes with some detail even from the 4,5-5m city sky where I live. M13 is resolved up until its core and looks great at 216x!

If you are looking for a portable 8" allround telescope with a very good quality you should consider this scope. Yes, I know that at the end of the day it is a compound scope with a large central obstruction of 37%, but go and see for yourself, it is much better than some people would like it to be).

The only downside I see (but I understand this should be even worse with SCT's) is that can take a good 60 minutes before the open tube is reasonably cooled down.

Clear Skies
Daniel
