I think the 18 is the best of the UO traditional volcano-top Orthos. Comfortable eye-relief (a bit tight with glasses). Excellent throughput and neutral color rendition. No noticeable edge distortions in normal use (planets stay round at the edge) Overall the contrast is very good, however it can show a little glare on the moon at certain angles, which probably has to do with the coatings. This does not happen all the time but I have noticed it on occasion. However for $59.95 new and even less for a good condition used one, it's tough to beat for lunar / planetary work.

Just added another one of these fine UO classic abbe orthos to my collection the 18mm. Just like my other 2 recent purchases the 4+6mm classic orthos another fine performer with a very sharp,high contrast field of view with excellent light transmission. Like the new addition of the large flat baffle in the lower barrel which does a very good job of removing any chance of scatter around bright planets and creating a "very" sharp field stop, nice touch!. Going to add the 25mm classic to the collection next. Sure love these orthos Mr. Seyfried!.

I use a pair with a TeleVue BinoVue and it's 2x amplifier behind a TV 2.5x Powermate. This provides for 311x in a 7" Mak-Newt for incredible planetary views. I've had all the UO Orthos. All are winners. I end up selling to try something else and always end up going back. One of the best EP values in the market for years with no end in sight. Hold their value well too. Superior for planetary detail and splitting tight doubles. I do not prefer them on deep-sky due to the AFOV. However, if you're trying to pick out fine details...pop one in! It's usually followed by "Oh yeah, now I see it".

Small, light, and comfortable to use. Nice and sharp with good contrast. Eye relief is very respectable. Just a tad bit of softness at the very edge at f/5, but nothing to be concerned about. Best of all, you can't beat the price!

Outstanding ocular. Bought three of these all perfect. Completly blows away my plossls from Meade on contrast and brightness. Would definatly recommend these without a second thought.

I truely love this eyepiece, and I just love to have one more of them to use in my binoviewer.

Optically, it's sharp out to the edge, I can have half a planet outside and half inside but still get a very decent image.

Eye relief is enough, field stop is very cleanly defined.

Mechanically it's on the right level, and it's light as well.

For what they are and what they cost, they can't be beat. I fooled around with erfles, plossls and wide views until I tried these babies at a star party. I was shocked at the crisp image, blew away anything else I tried. (I don't own or have I looked thru $150+ eyepieces) I have a Televue Genesis SDF and I got rid of the other stuff and now use these exclusivly.
This does not mean I will not try other eyepieces, I have and will continue to do so. To my eye the U.O. Orthos can't be beat. Rating: Best Bet

In a world of 6 and 7 element widefields, the basic, crisp design of the good old-fashioned orthoscopic (and great price) is refreshing. Great contrast and light throughput. Works well on lunar, planetary and select deep sky objects. A fine, economical additon to any eyepiece collection. Highly recommended.
