TeleVue Zoom 8mm-24mm
This is a great eyepiece. I was especially pleased when my son and I had it in his 6" f/6 Dob to view an occultation of Saturn by the moon and the quick ability to "zoom" in and out quickly greatly enhanced the experience! I have also used on my C8 f/10 and it performs just as well. The reason for the 9 rating is that you will have to tweak the focus as you zoom because it is not 100% parafocal among the various powers provided. I purchased used "like new" for $150 shipped and think it to be well worth the investment.

I have had this eyepiece for at least 5 years. In the days when I was using an LX200 - 8" it was the perfect thing for public star parties. A 32mm Plössl was all that was needed. I especially liked not have too many eyepieces out in public. The optics do scatter the light a bit, which with an 8" or 10" was okay, but recently I went to a C6 and it needs all the help it can get. So, I have gone to the Takahashi LEs in its place and will sell it. For the right scope and the right circumstances it is a very good eyepiece.

Sorry, but I must amend my statement here. Silly I know to reply to your own message, but I left out some important words that must clarify.

It should read, "Coupled with a 32mm Plossl, together they were the only things needed."

Click version used on an ETX-90. Great eyepiece. Whole field sharp from 8mm to 24mm. Eye relief a little shorter than expected, but no problem.

TeleVue Zoom 8mm-24mm
In general, this EP is very good, with good edge sharpness, smooth zoom (this is the clickless version), and the brightness compares very favorably with my various Meade 4000 series plossls. My main complaint is that the focus shift as one zooms is pretty significant, comparable to that found in shifting among a group of non-parfocal individual EP's. While I realize that other compromises are required to maintain close-to-in-focus conditions as one zooms, this EP is pretty far from what is currently state of the art. Since acquiring this EP, it has become my main choice for routine higher power use, since the zoom feature makes it easy to follow an object to higher magnification. Since I have an SCT with significant focus shift, the failure to follow-focus detracts from the advantages of this EP

>sharp and clear with good eye relief, a little stiff motion though

i found last night that at about-1deg C the zoom became too stiff to turn and the ep was twisting around in the focusser!!
anyone else had this problem in cold weather?
otherwise a very nice ep.

I bought mine secondhand, for $130.. now i am no expert when it comes to optics, i have an 8 inch F5 dob, for fun, and combined with this eyepiece the setup offers a lot of fun, i spend much longer at the eyepiece now than i ever did before, zooming in and out, looking for that perfect image. views so far are very good, cassini division inky black, saw a moon shadow on jupiter, cant wait to try zooming around the moon, but it does lose a lot at the highest setting, with my scope and my skies it is no good at 8mm...but gets very close to that.

i am now looking for a decent barlow and that with this ep and the dob will totally satisfy my needs. the supposed narrow FOV at low power does not bother me one bit.

My 20mm Tele Vue Plossl and 18mm UO Orthos stay at home for most of the time after I got this EP.
