When it comes to sharp 82 degree FOVs the Naglers are in a class by themselves. I already had a 13mm T6 and added the 9mm to plug a magnification hole in my set. They are small, light, and a pleasure to view with.

I already had a 10mm Radian when I received this eyepiece, with the thought being to to buy more samples of whichever I liked better. My expectations of the little 9mm T6 were quite high, due to experience with 12mm and 17mm Nagler T4s. So let the games begin...

The scopes used for the shoot out were a 2500mm SCT and an 880mm Refractor. Both were equipped to track their targets, which does take away something from the Nagler's field of view advantage. It's never completely fair to compare two eyepieces of different focal lengths, even when they are this close, so factor that in as you read my thoughts. The eyepiece is surprisingling small for a Nagler, being significantly smaller and somewhat lighter than the Radian. The size of the Radian is somewhat deceptive due to the instajust collar that increases the diameter.

The T6 Nagler uses a thicker and more rigid eyecup than is found on other Televue eyepieces. It is less comfortable to use than the other softer type, and you do need to get close to this Nagler in order to take in the whole field. The end cap didn't seem to want to stay on that hard rubber eyecup if you care about these things. Score one for the Radian.

Comparing these eyepieces in the big SCT wasn't entirely fair, as the 278X produced by the Nagler was pushing the limits of seeing most nights. That made it somewhat difficult to focus, although I was able to draw a good sharp focus on the Cassini division on a couple of nights. I expected the background sky to be darker in the Nagler due to the higher magnification, but that didn't seem to be the case. Call this one a draw due to the limits of the seeing.

Moving to the 4 inch refractor, neither eyepiece challenged the limits of seeing at 98X for the Nagler and 88X for the Radian. Now the differences started to show and my preference began to form. Looking at bright showpiece objects, including Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon, I found both the sharpness and the constrast of the Radian to be consistently better. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the difference was dramatic, but it was noticeable. The Nagler T6 was no slouch to be sure, but the Radian was clearly better in my opinion. Score another one for the Radian. I eventually sold the Nagler T6 to purchase another Radian.

If I were to own a Dob and track my targets by hand, I would favor the Nagler T6. If you demand the ultimate in sharpness and contrast, and you don't have to track your targets by hand, then you might want to have a look through a comparably sized Radian before commiting to one of these Nagler T6s.

TeleVue Nagler Type 6 9mm
This is my first Nagler and what an EP it is! I used this up at NM Skies Guest Observatory on their 25" F/4 Dob. Swan nebula explodes with detail, M57 fits into the wide FOV, and M13 resolves into hundreds of sparkling stars! A feasting for your eyes! Jupiter is very sharp and detailed in my Borg 76ED apo. Superb with a short focal length refractor for sweeping open clusters. Lightweight and parfocal with my 32mm TV plossl and 16mm T5. Expensive but definitely worth the views! I love it.

TeleVue Nagler Type 6 9mm
This is the first Nagler I bought .I now have the 11 & 13 mm T/6,s as well as all the T/5,s. That tells you what I think of this ep. Which one of the T6,s I use the most in an evening depends on the seeing conditions.In my 20" F/5 Obsession this is my highest power ep. A 2x 2" Powermate handles any higher powers needed which is rare.This ep is a solid performer in a large dob like mine.Go for it.

My second favorite E.P next to the 13t6. I use it in a 10" dob, 6" dob and a 4.5"f/4 starblast with wonderfull results.

TeleVue Nagler Type 6 9mm
The Nagler Type 6 line and I do not get along. Instead of adding a Space Walk, they get in the way of viewing. I purchased two, a 5mm and 9mm without trying. My mistake.

For this eyepiece line: TRY Before You BUY. Some people hate them and others love them.

My eyelashes wipe the glass and get it greasy within 15 minutes of use. The advertised eye relief seems to me to be creative writing.

The eyecup is not adequate to keep stray light from entering my eye.

There is the Kidney bean effect unless the eye is positioned just right.

There is a great deal of field curvature. Gets annoying when panning.

The glass can provide crisp views if you can keep it clean long enough.

I enjoy the Type 4 Naglers and expected much more from the Type 6.

In an 8 inch SCT on a clear night this eyepiece is totally absorbing! If I had only a few eyepeices I would have this for high power close up views that are stunning, a Meade 14mm UWA or Nagler 22mm type 4 and a Pan 35mm or TV plossl 32mm.That's all I would need for perfect viewing in an 8 inch SCT.

I am writing this review after selling my 9mm T6. There is nothing terribly wrong about this eyepiece but IMO it is not deserving of all the hype nor of its pricetag. It is, indeed, a very small and lightweight eyepiece that gives a very large field of view. It is sharp and realtively contrasty. On the other hand the 9mm nagler is neither as sharp as, nor as contrasty as the Pentax 10.5 XL. Your get more FOV in the 9mm vs the Pentax but the Nagler is no where near as comforatble to use. The 12mm listed eye relief on the 9mm T6 is best described as "creative fiction." If you want to see the whole view, and this is what you are paying your money for, you need to ram your eyeball reeaal close! I honestly don't see why you would pay $280 for this ep. There are better and cheaper eyepices out there. You might not get that 82 degree FOV, but in practice that loss means nothing.

The guy who rating eyepiece a 8 needs to get his eyes checked. This eyepiece has no equal! It is the best 9mm eyepiece on the market hands down. Contrast, sharpness and FOV are superior to anything out there on the market today. I checked this eyepiece through my friends starmaster 12 in. telescope, we used radians, orthos, old naglers and anything you can thinks of, nothing came close. Do yourself a favor and buy it. You will not regret it.
