Another Typical Nagler Eyepiece, Huge field of view, with sharpness to the edges, What can I say? Fabulous Eyepiece. Can't Go Wrong with it.

For me, the kidney bean effect was an initial minor annoyance which I easily overcame. Because some have real trouble with this, you may, before buying one (used), want to seek out somebody at a star party who has a TV 13mm Nagler and will let you take a peek to see if the recurring "kidney bean" is a problem for you. I have the Taiwan-made version (newer). Views are tack-sharp to the edge, using a 4" Celestron refractor. Deep-sky views are a knock-out. The eyepiece is indeed a heavyweight and requires some mount rebalancing (also, it's probably best to use it with a more substantial 2" diagonal, rather than a 1.25", on a refractor).

The eyepiece that started it all, you have to love it despite kidney bean effect. The older Japan versions seem sharper than the newer Taiwan versions.

TeleVue Nagler 13mm
This was the only Nagler with decent eye relief prior to the type 4s and provides a sharp and comfortable portal view as long as your eye position is precise. Was willing to live with the kidney bean in exchange for more ER. Since the 12mm type 4 also beans, might try replacing the 13mm Nagler with the Meade 14mm UWA which evidently dosen't bean as badly.

TeleVue Nagler 13mm
I own the old Japan made version... it offers the best contrast an eyepeice can have. The new 12mm Nagler type 4 is as good as the old 13mm Nagler without
the kidney-beam effect.

TeleVue Nagler 13mm
This is a good eyepiece, but not great. The views are sharp and wide, but I find the kidney bean distortion very distracting. Beyond that, this eyepiece is extremely heavy (about a pound and a half). Considering what this eyepiece brings on the used market, I would consider shelling out an extra $100 or so and getting a new 12mm Type 4.

I had one of these, but soon ditched it. I found the kidney bean effect really annoying.

Outstanding, huge, widefield eyepiece. Kidney bean a bit distracting, but otherwise excellent.
