WOW what a great little APO refractor. It is pure Takahashi all the way and i'm hooked. This is my second Tak that I currently own,my first being a TOA 130,but the TOA is not exactly portable like the 78 is.I just watched the lunar eclipse through the 78 with a 22 Panoptic and the views were truly spectacular.Everybody in town stopped by to look and all were impressed, hell I even got laid out of the deal! Now thats a telescope! Can you beat that?
All fun and games aside ,this is really a well made instrument that truly is a work of art,and the views match the asthetics as well!

I sold my LX200 GPS 10" and bought this little beauty. I was very exited the first time I took it out doors. I have for the moment really bad eyepieces but the view of the moon, Saturn and Jupiter was breathtaking!!! What a view. This little scope are just incredible. I will never sell this scope. I have ordered new eyepieces and I can just imagen how amazing the views will be.

I really recommend this scope. You will not be disappointed!!

I have owned my FS-78 for about 3 years now and can say without reservation that it is a fantastic instrument. I have had the opportuniity to compare this little Tak with several of the popular alternatives and with the exception of portability (non retractable dew shield and f8 fl) the 78 always seems to win out. Contrast is excellent and the stars are tiny dots. At a recent star party the little Tak was the class of the field as far as showing the double double in eLyra. 4 cleanly separated perfect little dots with no question of separation to anyones eyes. The f8 focal ratio makes the FS-78 a classy little planetary scope also. Watching Jovian shadow transits is an easy task. Detail in the Orion nebula with a 3 inch scope? Yes...along with a beautiful Trapezium. Really I can't say enough good things about the FS-78. It is my most used of 6 scopes (light and easy to carry out on a GP mount).

Mine is one of the last made and I bought it used. Had spent far too much looking for the 'right' scope and was about to give up. But the FS78 is, by far, the best astronomy money I've spent.

Excellent pin-point star images, no false color and great build quality. The clear crisp image leaves no doubt about whether you've reached focus. I've bought reflectors, an SCT, a Mak-Cass and another larger, non-TAK APO. They all take a back seat to the FS78. I get a very satisfied and happy feeling everytime I use it...wish I could say the same for the others.

Now a question: Is it good because it's small or because it's a TAK...or both? If I thought the FS128 performed at this level, I'd sell all the others and try to pick one up.

I sold an excellent 5.5" Maksutov so I could afford an FS78. I wondered if this was really a good idea until my first night with the 78. I have no more hassle with long cool down times (typically on a cold winter night the Mak needed 1 hr+ before stars would resolve properly). But the best bit is the jaw-dropping views in the 78. Open clusters, the moon and planets are stunning. Sharp enough to shave with and no noticeable false colour. The 78 seems to show at least as much detail in M42 as the larger Mak did and blows it away on the trapezium, or any multiple stars. Of course on faint dso's the 78 isn't so great but that's like complaining that your Ferrari is no good off-road. I'm delighted with the 78 and won't part with it until I can replace it with an FS102.

For a 3 inch scope, its very nice. Very sharp, contrasty optics. The mechanics are top notch. But don't expect it to perform miracles. A 3 inch scope is exactly that; a 3 inch scope. I think it gives very nice views of the star fields and open clusters, and I love to use mine for scanning the fields. But I find that I always turn to my larger instuments for serious viewing.

I just purchased an FS-78 with a Televue everbrite diagonal as an upgrade over a stellarvue AT 1010. I also have a 8 inch SCT with very good optics. I've have always loved my stellarvue; but I have always wanted a Tak, so I went for it. At least as much as I could afford. I've used it now for a couple weeks and it does give stunning views. I was worried that a 80mm Tak would not be a big enough upgrade over a 80mm Stellarvue for the cost, but it really is. Side by side comparisons show the Tak having a "richer" image. A much cleaner image. My Stellarvue is very sharp and bright, but the Tak is a good step up. And how about that focusser!. I did spend my grocery money for the next two years on the Tak, but I would do it again. Its well worth the effort to save your pennies for a Tak-FS78.

Bought a used tak fs78 and, from another source, a tak spaceboy mount. The scope is simply incredible. I've owed several scopes to twelve inches. This one proves that it's not size, it's quality, that matters. True apo performance and the best planetary scope I've ever owned. Wonderfully crisp views.
