I recently purchased a Takahashi NJP-160 Temma 2 mount for use with my new TMB 175 f/8 (lightweight model). This is not a lightweight mount.

The first impression one obtains upon setting up the NJP is that the workmanship , fit and finish , are all at an extremely high standard. It may be set up on either a tripod or pier , and both options are available from Takahashi. I chose the tripod option , since I don't have a dedicaated observatory as yet. Setting up is a bit of a chore , since some of the parts are heavy : the equatorial head alone is 55# , and 3 counterweights at 14# each , the counterweight shaft adds another 5# ; add on a dovetail or mounting plate plus rings , and you have a 120# system. Of course all this weight equates to an extremely stable mount , since everything goes together with fine tolerances. My tripod assembly adds another some 20#.

I normally mount the telescope before dusk for thermal equilibration of the optics ; I then polar align the system as soon as Polaris is visible. This is one of the best features of the mount : polar alignment is a snap.

I don't normally use the "go-to" features , but the system integrates well with "The Sky" software (Software Bisque). A laptop is required to operate the Temma "go-to" features , or a hand controller is available from Takahashi for ~ $550.00.

Once polar aligned , the scope may be roughly positioned manually by loosening the clutches , or if the object is fairly close by , slewing by the very smooth and quiet electric motors. The mount tracks very well , and only occasional re-centering of objects is necesssary even at high magnifications.

The mount handles my 42# OTA with ease , and alot of capacity to spare should I decide to use CCD imaging at a later date. Once the mount is set up , it is a real joy to use. Highly recommended!

Wow, what a mount. After having several mounts I am now satisfied. Everything worked and worked well right out of the box. Yeah!

It is extremely well made as can be expected from a quality Japanese manufacturer.

I have used it a few times now and it just continues to impress. With my Tak FS152 and William Optics fluorite triplet
mounted on a pier it also looks a million dollars.

I am very enthusiastic about this mount. Also makes a really cool sound when it does a go-to. I see lots of really good astro shots being done with this baby and it will be all the mount I will ever need.

Greg.
