I have owned these 8.5x Els for about a week. I tried and compared several high end bino's before deciding on these. They were about $300 more than the rest of the bino's I was comparing to. With the new Swarobrite coatings I truely believe these bino's have set a new standard with optics and ergonomics. The wheel might be slow but if you use them for astronomy they are perfect. Of coarse for birding the Els are the best hands down. Well worth the $1250 I paid for these bino's . The best 42mm bino on the market today....purchase the best and you will forget the rest...

These puppies are pricey, but really exceptional. They are very bright and have tremendous depth of field. Even so, properly adjusted to any individual's eyes, they are super easy to focus and that combination of great perceived depth of field and great ease of focus is rare. They are sharp quite far to the edges. The major feature however is how relaxed the views are. Bright, comfortable and relaxed, without coloration bias at all. Neutral, sharp, bright and relaxed is how I would describe them. One problem is that after looking through these, the views through my many other very good and not so good binoculars is quite disappointing. The case is neither here nor there and the strap, in my judgment actually sucks. I replaced it almost immediately.

Swarovski EL 10x42
This is actually a commentary about the Swarovski EL 10x32 model in comparison to the EL 10x42 model. I purchased the Swarovski EL 10x32 model in January of 2006. I began to use this model in the forests of Norway during winter, and was at first extremely disappointed. I could not see the colors of the plastic rings of the birds I was working with. Although it is true that these binoculars weigh considerably less than the EL 10x42 model, they also let in much less light. I had originally tested the EL 10x32 model on a sunny day and did not have any problems distinguishing color. However, once I bought the binoculars I found that on overcast winter days colors were extremely hard to see. Nevertheless, now that it is spring and the light in the forest is bright, I am in love with my EL 10x32s. They weigh next to nothing and are perfect for me given that I spend all of my day walking in the forest. I would suggest the EL 10x32 model only for people who dont plan to use binoculars in poor lighting conditions (wintertime, or early morning/late evening) and who find it very important to minimize weight as much as possible.

Swarovski EL 10x42
As expected, I found these binoculars to have incredible ergonomics-a great, solid feel to them. Optically great too, although I thought that there was some minor distortion (astigmatism?) at the very edges. A friend of mine however thought that they were sharp to the edges. I did not like the focus wheel; it was too stiff and slow for me. My advice is to check them out before buying or at least buy from a place like Eagle Optics that will accept returns.

These binoculars are outstanding, better than the Nikon 10x42 Superior E's that I was thinking of getting. Good thing I looked around before I got a pair.

Swarovski EL 10x42
Yes, the optics are exceptionally bright and nuetral. Yes, the magnesium housing is light and ergonimically pleasing. But the focus wheel and the price are suspect. If you must own Swarovski, check out the 10x50 SLC (which are brighter and less expensive) and the EL's suddenly seem less attractive.

Everytime I put these binoculars up to my eyes I say, thank you to Pete Dunn,
who in his reviews has said to not buy interim optics, save for what you want.
I have used these in all applications, close focus on trails and on mountain tops during hawk migration, in almost dark conditions observing Great Horned Owls. They are absolutely fantastic to use. Good luck in waiting for your order. I purchased two pair at the Mass Audubon Optics Fair in Sept. 2000 and they sold $14,000 Swarovski EL's in 1 hour. Can you say anything more!

The best bino's out there in this range. Perfect optics. Very light and robust with great hand-fitting form. But expect to wait two months or so because of backlog.

I actually own the 8.5x42 EL. I would say that these Binoculars are not for everyone. You can buy Binoculars that are ALMOST as good for a few hundred less dollars. Leica makes some fine optics for hundreds less. But IF you are looking for the absolute best optics as far as clarity, quality, and weight; the EL's are in my oppinion the best binoculars made in the world.
