Description:The 5 month wait was torture however if you have any questions in the mean time you can reach Jimmy B either late at night by phone or by email. The size of the tube is now 51.5" long by 9.5" diameter instead of the 48 by 10.5 as indicated on the Starsplitter Website (as of 9/2000).

Jim told me their supplier changed the dimensions. The smaller diameter doesn't really present any tube current problems and can actually brighten the image. The mirror cell can only go in by forcibly pushing it which can scratch the inside of the tube. Other than this, The scope is outstanding. Where else can you get an 8 inch aperture, world class Zambuto Optics, a furniture quality wood base, a rotating tube (to prevent straining your back) for $1100. Planetary views are incredible and are comparable to the finest Apos and Maksutovs. The Klee Barlow works great with it. I use the Klee along with Ultrascopics and orthoscopics from the 15mm range up to 10 depending on sky conditions. You can hook JMI digital setting circles up to it (as I did) which work fine. Just about any and every globular cluster will get resolved in this scope. 10.

Starsplitter 8" Tube
Excellent optics once it's cooled. Planetary views crisp and outstanding (five moons of Saturn, etc). Excellent craftmanship on the woodwork. A bit heavy for an 8" (mostly the oversize tube box) but that just makes it more stable. Heavy eyepieces can make the tube drop depending on how the focuser is oriented but it's worth it to have the rotating tube, a very nice feature, especially for kids.
