Slayers: The Motion Picture review

(Remember, if this review is helpful or well-written, please give me a good rating (down below!) Thanks for your support! *^__^)

Animation:
Take Slayers and give it an actual budget and you're gonna get some high-quality animation. Nice stuff here.

Plot:
Somehow I'm just not used to seeing one self-contained story that goes over 60 minutes in Slayers... But maybe that's just me.
But the plot itself wasn't bad by any stretch. If nothing else, it provides an interesting setup for the TV series as well as a story that's more emotional and involving than anything else you'll ever see in Slayers.
Rowdy was, after all, an interesting character with an interesting past, and he had motives that were understandable enough that you could sympathize with him...
I will say, though, that I definitely would've liked some explanation on why elves and humans weren't allowed to see each other, or why they threw in three slimes in the forest for no particular reason. Oh well.

Humor:
It's funny, sure, but it suffers the same fate that most TV anime suffers when it's made into a movie: If you have to make a self-contained story in little more than an hour, there's not as much room for humor as there would be normally.
Thankfully, though, Slayers doesn't fall into the "Sailor Moon" category of losing virtually all humor for a movie. In fact, seeing as Lina's never taken anything really seriously anyway, there's not much difference between her lighthearted side and her serious side. What takes away from the humor here is that it's set before the TV series. Naga's funny in her own way, with a laugh that reminds me of Jinnai from El Hazard, but no one character can make up for both Gourry and Amelia, much less the rest of the Slayers cast.
Still, as I said, funny enough. I liked the Summon Jelly Fish guy and the stone dragon that Naga summoned, as well as Lina getting the better of Rowdy even in a dream.

Soundtrack:
It's Slayers without Get Along. ...It's Slayers without Get Along! Who doesn't love Get Along?
Oh, and it also has serious background music.
Now, don't get me wrong: I love serious music. It's great stuff, and can often add to the emotion of a series.
But this is Slayers. It's not supposed to be emotional, and there's just something about the distinctly lower-budget TV series music that has a certain kind of flair to it.
It's sort of like the completely flat dubbing of a Godzilla movie: Get rid of that, and it just doesn't feel like Godzilla anymore!

Overall:
I wanted to give this movie an 8, because it's somewhere in-between a 7 and an 8... But I just can't bring myself to give it an 8 because when I review the TV series, I'm going to give that an 8, and the movie isn't as good as the rest of the anime.
Yes, the animation is better. Yes, the plot is better.
But this is Slayers, and Slayers isn't about animation or plot.
Even as a fan, I'd say you should probably check out all three seasons before you get to this. Or, if you want something self-contained and you can't afford three box sets of Slayers seasons, go for the OAVs first. They're the same price and they last longer.
Somewhat recommended.

Slayers: The Motion Picture
This is the best of the Slayers movies in my opinion...which is kind of a sad statement to make. It is the only movie with a plot with any substance at all. It is worth seeing. It's the best of Lina and Naga's adventures. "Fireball." -Lina

Slayers: The Motion Picture
Good movie. I was surprised that Dick Saucer did not catch the Dragon Half joke in the middle of the movie (the slime half part). Linna and Nahga really kicked some major ass on this one.

Slayers: The Motion Picture
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It is different from the other Slayers, but I could sit and listen to Hayashibara all day reading the dictionary. I don't know about Ortiz. I'll have to try to rent a dub someday. I have heard she is good. I'm not so stuck up that I won't listen to a good dub.
The only beef I have is Naga's outrageous proportions. It isn't even funny. Nor her laugh.

I think Lina's proportions are just right. I'm glad she didn't get in that pool.

Slayers: The Motion Picture
For those not in the know, this and the other slayers movies, as well as the OVAs are based on the "SLayers Special" novels (TV series' are based on original "Slayers" novels). And the storyline runs prior to the TV storyline. Just goes to show Megumi Hayashibara is not only an accomplished Seiyuu, but also a masterful songstress as well!

Dick Saucer was here

Slayers: The Motion Picture
Err...I didn't really see where the plot was supposed to be, since the plot just seemed to *end* without telling us...and some of the jokes were just boring.
