Shoujo Kakumei Utena/Revolutionary Girl Utena
What's there to say, this is really, really good anime. Tenjou Utena is a new student at the Ohtori Academy . When she was very young her parents died, and a prince arrived and comforted her, and ever after that she wants to become a prince herself. She is drawn into a strange society, mostly consisting of the Student Council, where students duel for the hand of the Rose Bride and the power to revolutionize the world. The Rose Bride is Himemiya Anthy, a silent young woman who tends the roses in Ohtori's indoor garden. The current champion of the duels, Saionji Kyouichi, is treating Anthy very badly and Utena gets angry and challenges him. Revolutionary Girl Utena is heavily inspired by Rose of Versailles, a classic anime series from the 1970's.
Revolutionary Girl Utena is very surrealistic, both in imagery and plot, but it usually works very well. The characters are interesting and change during the story - especielly Utena and Anthy. The beginning is rather light, but then the series turns darker and darker. The humor was nice and wholesome. What I must say impressed me was the art and animation. Very beautiful. Very DIFFERENT from what is being done in anime these days. Also, the music was great, with a lot of variety (but STOP THE DAMN VIOLINS ALREADY!). Anyways, though the plot tended to get lost, the characters were cool, the humor was good, the art was nice and the music great. All in all the whole the series is amazing, Good to rent, and I liked it a lot. I recommend it highly.

This is one of those series that just didn't do much for me, which puts me in an interesting conflict with my best friend. ^_^ The animation style is interesting, and quite pretty, though not everyone may like it. Utena is a neat character. I recommend this anime to people who like psychadellic anime. The characters are deep; but most are quite ruined, and horrible in their personalities. The comedy episodes are just stupid for the most part. I did LOVE the last few episodes. It's a pretty good series, but it just didn't click with me. That doesn't mean it won't click with you. ^_^ Happy watching. "The Million Swords that shine with people's hatred" -Akio

I really lked this one. It's a little weird, but once you get past that you'll see that this anime has excellent art, strong charachters, and a charming alure to it. The plot seems light but later gets really heavy in the end. The only thing I didn't like was the Apocalypse music they played during the staircase scene. Animerica described it best as "Van Halen does Gilbert and Sullivan"

Both the Utena movie and the 39 episode series are among some of the best anime I've seen. The soundtrack from the movie is excelent, while the series soundtrack is a notch below the movie's, but still very good. The animation in the series is somewhat sparse, but still good looking. The movie's animation, on the other hand, is second to none; absolutely stunning, beautiful is an understatement. The plot is unlike anything I've ever seen. The relationships between the charactors are very complex, leaving the viewer not quite sure just where everyone stands. Are they an allie or a foe? Hero or Villan? Friend or perhaps a love interest? I think this adds to the charm and intrigue of the series/moive. While not everyone will want to purchase the entire 10-DVD series (quite expensive), the movie is an absolute must-buy. I own about 200 anime DVD's, but if I had to chose 10 to keep, this one would easily be in that 10.

Wonderful series. Only seen the first two DVD's and the movie (which is somewhat different from the TV series, but excellent as well). Highly reconmended if you like complex plots that make you think (and keep on thinking even after it's over).

I love shows that make you think, and this one delights in forcing you to either analyze EVERYTHING or be very very confused, or both ^ ^ Any comparisons to Sailor Moon are WAAAY off. People, this really isn't a show you want little girls watching, at least not the later episodes..the show starts off funny and surreal, but then goes to being DARK and surreal. It explores such themes as psychological manipulation and to some extent incest, it's made rather clear that the characters have sex, and Akio is THE MOST EVIL character I have ever seen, in any anime, ever. He's the sort of evil that is enticing and irresitible, and that's the most terrifying kind, in some ways..in fact, most of the characters may seem like shallow stereotypes at first, but are soon revealed to have many-layered personas that are a delight to dissect. They're just such interesting head cases..even minor characters like Kozue or Ruka have their own sets of motivations and methods. Even the music is surreal..I happen to like the wonky duel songs, thank you ^ ^ Not for everyone, and not to be judged based on the first tape (which might trick you into thinking it's a cute show..), but one of my personal favorites.

This series is ecxellent, the animation is charming and the characters are unique. Unlike many female leads Utena is both strong minded but also niave, and is never annoying and whiny. This plot is irresistable with development throughout that never becomes repetative. Utena has a completely enthralling mystery about it that makes it oustanding in all factors

Much like Lain, this series makes my brain hurt, and i love it.
Oh, sure those first 13 episodes are all well and dandy, but when they
get into the Black Rose series 14 to 24/25 it just gets wacky. I
haven't seen past 25, but even the plot synopses make my brain hurt.
But in a good way.
Utena and Anthy are the cutest couple.

I find the series very good, because there alot to deal with the past tramua, everyone has a devasting incident in there child hood. In a way, they have lost there "innocence", except for utena
