Description:Many years ago, humans and demons lived in harmony. But that unity ended when demons started attacking humans and plotted a mission to unleash Gyumao - an evil demon imprisoned for thousands of years. Now, Genjo Sanzo, a rogue priest, must team up with three demons - Sha Gojyo, Son Goku, and Cho Hakkai - and embark on a perilous journey to the west to stop these demons from resurrecting Gyumao and restore the balance between humans and demons on Earth.

I saw this when I was 5 years old, and I still remember it vividly. I recently bought a copy and watched from a
grown-up's perspective. It brought back a lot of memories, even if I'm not as overwhelmed as I was as a child.

This film certainly deserves better than the treatment it's received in the US. Known in Japan as Saiyuki, it's one of the earliest anime features and was based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka (which had been adapted from chinese legend) Sadly most of the eastern elements were translated out in AIPs US release and the magnificent score was completely ditched in favor of new music by Les Baxter. A combo release of this and "Panda & the Magic Magic Serpent" with optional switchable soundtracks/subtitles would be most welcome!!

I've loved this film ever since I saw it when I was a kid. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Alakazam was played on TV every year during the 60s around Christmas time. I am buzy trying to find a copy for purchase. An animated film way before its time!

Saiyu-ki (Japanese version)
Alakazam the Great (1961) aka Magic Land of Alakazam,
and the Enchanted Monkey 
(Japanese animation with voices of Frankie Avalon and Jonathan Winters)

I have found little online about this. 
As you are probably aware, Amazon.com has a listing for this title but they are sold out. 
Moviesunlimited.com used to have it but it is now out of production and they don't have it any more. 
GoHastings.com has it on their books for US$20 but are also sold out. 
Netflix has very little anime range and this is not one of the titles.
Blockbuster has got it for hire, apparently.. but not in San Francisco.

Personally I wouldn't want a copy of this piece in it's Frankie-fied glory. I'd rather watch it in Japanese.. but then again that may be impossible to hunt down.

Directed by:
Lee Kresel, Daisaku Shirakawa, Osamu Tezuka, Taiji Yabushita.
It's not suprising that for such an old film (1960 - American video release 1961) it has made such an impact on those people who love it.
It also had animators from the crews of the Lupin series (and Castle of Cagliostro) and Arabian Nights: The Adventures of Sinbad (which is also a Tezuka title).

This anime is about and old legend about a monkey prince. This is the legend where akira toriyamma got his idea for dragon ball!! It contains the monkey, wu kong in chinese wich translates into son goku, his magic stick like the power pole, a special man who teaches him skills named merlin thanks to american dubbing. His special cloud, a shape changing pig and more. This legend helped to create street fihghter with its ki power!! I didn't like the way the americans changed it by adding characters that weren't in their before and my chinese friend wouldn't get off my back about it!!
I picked it up at rogers video for $5.00 and i suggest you buy it if you're a dragon ball fan, very old (1961) anime though and is directed more for kids!! Enjoy!! Gie me an e-mail to know more.
