I compared this eyepiece to an Astrobuffet RPD 30 mm and Edmund 32 mm Erfle in my 8 inch f10 SCT. Both of these eyepieces are two inch, like the 28.5mm Rini. At 28.5 mm, the Rini field of view is a little less than the other two in terms of true field. However, the apparent field of this eyepiece must be around 85 degrees.

The sharpest eyepiece of these three is the Edmund 32mm Erfle. From the center of the field, to 50% out toward the edge, the Edmund is clearly sharper than the other two. In fact, the Edmund 32 is the sharpest center field eyepiece I have ever looked through. Easily sharper than the 31 Nagler in the center. Of course, the 31 Nagler is much better edge corrected, but at the cost of center sharpness.

The 30mm RPD is better behaved on the edge than the 28.5 Rini and the 32mm Edmund Erfle. The Edmund 32 has a larger field stop too, but still the 30 mm RPD is a little better on edge than both the Rini and Edmund. All three of these eyepieces are very sharp, but the Edmund is a little sharper.

All three of these eyepieces are very good performers in my 8" f10 SCT. At f10, the outer field is certainly acceptable for all three.

Edge performance is terrible in fast scopes, but considering the cheap price tag and HUGE AFOV (at least 80°) I must give this scope a "9" It's a keeper! When I barlow the eyepiece it clears up the edge performance, making a fine 14.5mm eyepiece sharp nearly to the edge.

Excellent value. Edge disotortion is significant. Wish all the lenses were coated, light loss is noticeable with faint objects. Added a filter cell to mine, and a filter causes a bit of vignetting.

Ultra wide field of view is almost impossible to completely take in. Incredible low power views, great image scale. Really reduces brightness of sky over 38mm Rini, but field of view is nearly the same. Sharp in the center. Poor edge performance, but who cares, that's in your peripheral vision with this eyepiece. Some color on bright objects, low ghosting. Severe pincushion at the edges on linear objects not noticeable at night under the stars. Eye centering is critical to avoid sudden darkening of image. Eye relief is not as bad as it sounds for eyeglass wearers. Great low cost alternative to 27mm/35mm Panoptic or 20mm Nagler/30mm Leica for wide field views. I can't perceive the edge of the image when looking at the center, so a wider view would seem to be wasted.

Recently tried this eyepiece with a 2 inch 2X Barlow. The result appears to be around 16mm instead of 14.5mm due to massive focus in travel needed for this eyepiece. The edges improve dramatically and the view becomes intense, almost Nagler-like. FOV has to be much more than 75 degrees based on actual field of view seen and the amount of twisting of my neck it takes to see the edges. Only down side is increased exit pupil abberations forcing more critical eye placement. Eye relief seems less as well. This runs counter to the general wisdom of Barlows increasing eye relief. Sadly, Paul Rini no longer makes this eyepiece.
