Questar 7" Astro Model
Beautiful telescope. Optical and mechanical quality leaves nothing to be desired. This scope will need good seeing conditions to appreciate its quality. Rugged construction using quality material will ensure many years of dependable service. Star test is text-book under proper seeing conditions. High focal ratio ideal for planitary and lunar observations. Deep sky objects within its light grasp are spectacular. This scope deserves a stable, quality mount. Can be adapted to use all SCT accessories.

A friend owns one. It takes hours to temperature stabilize and . When it does it delivers very nice images but way dimmer than say a C8 with the starbright coatings. Planetary performance is very good too but I prefer the images I get(without waiting for hours) from a smaller aperture apochromatic refractor.
Well made but overpriced and outdated in my opinion.(Sorry Questar fans)

Lovely scope and really well made. Thermal properties I find frustrating and large central obstruction prevent it achieving as well as say a modern premium 715 Rumak on practically everything, or say a Zeiss or AP 5.1 inch Apo on planets and lunar observation.

Still on double stars and when cooled I would rate my friends Q7 as good as one could get. The obstruction helps here. Mirrors are very smooth as evidenced in the excellent star test.

I would think this scope suits being permanently mounted in an observatory with a roll off roof. A couple of hours after dusk and ooh la la!! the images then are excellent.

A friend owns an older version that does'nt have the advanced coatings.(1974 vintage I believe)
An excellent scope when the optics have cooled. In fact capable of working to its potential(given central obstruction)
Mechanically beautiful and well engineered. It has a superbly smooth wavefront and only 1/8 th wave spherical aberration. I wish I'd bought the thing. I put my mate onto it. An old guy sold it for about 20% it's value.
I'd just bought an apo Zeiss.

I've owned quite a few fine scopes of all types from APOS to 12>5-F20 Tri-Schiefspieglers- Bought two Questars via the "Starry Messenger" ( Which I Miss) And got them for a song.I feel LUCKY. The 3.5 is circa 1962,mint. The 7" is 1972,near mint. Both in my opinion are works of art. One muat remember that these instruments only occupy a small volume of space. with THAT in mind they are hard to beat. For quality of construction and durabiliy-unequaled. Yes they have a "cool down " time factor...so what. If your in that big of a rush in an endeavor that "patience" is required, your in the wrong sport. Optics.text book on star tests, also VERY flat field. Mount super-stability great CCD or photo platform. Clock drive EXCELLENT. The MAK is a very impressive design! Why do you think Rolly Christian is trying to make a Mak-ish telescope ? He's no dumb-dumb.
