"Pom Poko" is a wonderful, funny, and touching film, but is unfortunately somewhat inaccessible to Western viewers. The tanuki is a well-known fixture of Japanese folklore, endowed with various mythical powers and abilities, which factor heavily in the story presented in the film. One typically doesn't have to do "homework" to appreciate a film, but this one is so *especially* Japanese that it's difficult to get a grasp on the story without at least a little bit of a primer on Tanuki folklore.

Consider this comment from Roger Ebert regarding the one element of the film which Americans find "shocking":

"This Japanese family film about cute animals is not likely to make a sale in the American market, since the secret weapon of the raccoons is their ability to make their testicles grow so large they can crush their opponents...the Japanese are more open in their attitude toward human plumbing than we are. So are children, who would probably be delighted by the raccoon's choice of weapons, if it were not for their dreary parents."

In traditional imagery, the male Tanuki is always portrayed with [to our eyes] rather prominent testicles. It's just the way it is, and I can assure you that no one in Japan finds anything at all shocking about it. The tradition is used to humorous effect in the film. It's a miniscule element of a sensitive, charming film that deals with much bigger issues than the folklore.

Lets get one thing straight. This is a studio ghibli production but it was not done by Hayao Miyazaki. It was done by his colleague Isao Takahama and I found it to be very boring. Its not that its not good but I almost slept during some scenes. ANd whats with the racoons always extending thier "privates"?

This was a great film. What else can you expect from Studio Ghibli? The film was extremely funny with a bittersweet ending. This film is directed towards all ages but I would caution against showing it to kids. The raccoons in the movie do some really whacked out things (causing accidents, killing people) and there are some cultural elements that may be misunderstood. However it is the cultural richness of the film that realy sets it apart from any other film of its kind, if there really is any film like it.

>simple miyazaky's done it!!!

Actually this film was written and directed by Isao Takahata.
The executive Producer was Hayao Myazaki, but he did not create the film.

When I saw it it was on a DVD with Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro) which is another Studio Ghibli title. The fact that these films are made by the same company may be the reason for confusion... I made the same mistake at first.
