This is *the* seminal anime film. Deep, suspensful and intelligent, the first Patlabor motion picture directed by Mamoru Oshii (of Ghost in The Shell fame) is part detective drama, part police story, part social commentary. It asks the difficult questions of a possible near future and looks deep into the intricacies of the modern urban Japanese society. Great characters, beautiful animation, wacky police action... Patlabor 1 has it all. If you are looking for the latest in busty bimbos or fanboy flavor-of-the-week planet-shredding mecha action, stay home. If instead, you're into seeing a smart, fun movie worth watching again and again, Patlabor 1 is for you. (Braincells not included.)

Mmmm...digable. Maybe better if I'd seen the TV and/or OVAs. Certainly better than the second movie.

This is as good as a mecha anime can be as a theatrical art. People have different types of animes they prefer, but being blinded by constant action and hyperbolic violence is not the way to watch an anime. The plot, the point of view, and how the mysteries reveal themselves are quite extraordinary. And when there comes time for action, they once again did a great job. I personally prefer the way the characters were drawn for the TV series and OAVs, but the animation is superb in general and in actions scenes in particular.

I give it a 9, but it should be something like 9.4-9.6.

Very entertaining drama with solid plot, and nice attempt at believability even though it's not exactly realistic. It's would have been easier to just replace the memory and/or remove the power source (mecha's can't run without power right) In addition, the dialogue while well thought out and somewhat though provoking seemed a bit soliloquized at times. The acting is very nice. However, if you only like action in your animes you'll probably give it a 1 (which would be truly unjust, since what it lacks in action, it more that compensates in animation, acting, story, and conception). "Patlabor" is much more about the people that works with labors than the actually labors themselves. For a greater feel of the characters, rent the TV or OAV series.

Patlabor 1 was one hell of a good drama... but it seems to be advertised as a mecha/action anime. I consider it one of the better drama/mystery animes, but if you are looking for a good mecha/action anime, pick up Neon Genesis Evangelion. Patlabor 1 is mostly talking. There are a couple action scenes (one of them being the introduction to the anime itself), but they are rather less action-packed compared to the TV version. The only problem I find with it is the fact that you may watch the movie expecting to find a lot of mecha action, but instead find a high quality drama.

A well written mystery plot. Moves slowly if you have the attention
span of a fruit fly and insist on battle scenes every thirty seconds.
Otherwise one of the best, although the second Patlobor movie is even
better. Great work from writer Ito and director Oshii, whose partnership
goes back to Urushi Yatsara -- both the TV series and the movie Beautiful
Dreamer -- and forward to their superb work on Ghost in the Shell.
