Orion Sirius Plossl 40mm
I bought this eyepiece new to go with my 4.5" reflector a few years ago. It is a good eyepiece. Image quality is very good except at the very edges, and it shows little chromatic aberration. The 1.9 degree FOV is good for hunting down comets and DSO's, although more FOV would be nice at times. This eyepiece is a very good deal for a wide angle eyepiece for somebody on a budget.

I am using this on my XT10" until I get a TeleVue Panoptic 35mm. It has performed quite well on the XT10, showing little to no coma (which is probably in part due to the excellent optics mine came with). I have no complaints about it. I would definitely recommend this, or the 32mm for anybody wanting a wide angle eyepiece on a budget.

A decent eyepiece for the money.
It dosnt compare to a ultima, tv, or many other really good plossls.
Id recommend to a astronomer on a budget, it will give you really good quality views. Yes there are a lot better eyepieces out there, but they are a lot more expensive, this eyepiece will work a lot better on slow scopes of f10 to f6,because of the exit pupil dilemma of 7mm & below.

Works well just like the 32mm but with a smaller Ap FOV.Good finder eyepiece in scopes with only 1.25 focusers.

In a long focal length telescope (maksutov or refractor) the stars are pinpoint across the entire field. The views are clear and contrasty. The eye relief is good; allowing one not to have to get too close or too far away.

The optical limitation is that it would be nice if this could have a slightly larger apparent field of view, say around 50 degrees.

The value is very good, only slightly exceeded by the phenomenally low price of various RINI eyepieces which are only slightly inferior in optical quality.

The 32mm and 25mm are the best of the Plossl line. Bright images, decent field of view, and good eye relief. The 40mm has about the same FOV as the 32mm in absolute terms. But the 32mm instead.

Got some of Orion's big glass? Need a really convenient finder scope? Not that dreadful thang that came with your Dob or Mak/Newt?
This is your baby!
Plus, pop on Orion's 1.25" broadband neb filter and for about a hundred bucks you've got a workable setup for moderate deep sky! It ain't a Mewlon 250 on an NJP, but hey, you'll still have 15 grand in your pocket!

Good 40mm but I would recommend the 32mm over this one any day. The 32mm has only a very slightly less true field and better contrast due to the higher magnification in my C8. Eye relief for me is not at all hard to hold. My other problem with it, which is more ME than the eyepiece, is the field stop isn't as sharp as I'd like it to be. Again, check out the 32mm before buying the 40mm.

Many of my problems with this eyepiece are probably due to the 40mm design in general. The contrast of the images is not very good. It makes finding galaxies difficult. The sweet spot is small so getting a full image is difficult and blackouts are common. I don't use this eyepiece much at all. I have a meade 32mm superplossl that has superior contrast and virtually no blackouts. I commonly use the 32mm for the purpose that i got the 40mm. Why doesn't orion give you end caps or a case for the eyepiece. Many eyepieces i have purchased for half the price or less provide them. I don't recommend this unless you can get it on the used market for far cheaper.
