Description:The barrel is 7.8 cm long, with a lens element that is 2.2 cm wide. The sides of the lens is not darkened creating significant glare at the terminator of the moon. This can be corrected by darkening the sides of the lens with a black felt tip marker. The lens has a light blue coating. Views of the moon are white/bluish (no yellowish cast). The optical surface seems to be well corrected, allowing good views up to 135X (though without added detail). At 175X per inch, the resolution begins to break down.

An good barlow. Becomes very good with the addition of lens edge darkening. At the price, an excellent buy.

I used this barlow for nearly a year before getting the shorty plus. It's a good barlow, I like the fact that it has filter threads and two set screws for holding eyepieces.

Comparing it to the shorty plus, the plus has better contrast and color correction. Still, it required using an apo to tell the difference, so for achromats or fast newtonians, this may not be visible.

On bright objects like the bright moon, reflection glare did cause some problems in this barlow. In these cases, I put my moon filter in front of this barlow so that the light intensity was reduced before reaching the eyepiece.

Pretty good barlow for the price.

I’ve used the Shorty for about six-months and have no complaints. I took the advice of darkening the sides of the lens and this showed an improvement in image. I’m not a big fan of the two eyepiece screws so I removed one, but this is not an issue. I’ve used it on both refractors and my SCT and have found it very serviceable and a good value.
