Orion Lanthanum Superwide 22mm
Based upon Paul Hart's review I waited until the price at Orion dipped and bought mine for around $179.00. I am extremely happy with it in both my Nighthawk and my 14" f4.7. The stars are crisp to the edge. No CA. Nice flat field to the edge. Other than weight and price, I can see no difference between it and Panoptic.

So I repeat Paul's advice. Wait until the price drops. When it does, grab one.

In the past few years, I have bought and sold quite a few eyepieces, but this one, along with a 12mm Nagler 2 are my favorites. Optically it is excellent, and I would rate it a 9.5 if that were possible. This ep is primarily used with a fast f/ 4.8 reflector, and there is just a slight hint of coma at the extreme edges. On several occassions, other amateurs have commented on the quality of the view and wanted to know which eyepiece I was using. If Orion ever has a clearance on this eyepiece, or if you can grab a used one, do yourself a favor and buy it.

1/4/08 Well, it almost broke my heart, but I sold it, only because I picked up a 24 Panoptic. Visually there was very little difference between them. The Pan was very slightly sharper at the extreme edge of field, really there was no difference. I did like that the Panoptic was lighter and smaller than the LVW. Decided that I really don't need 2 EP's that close together. But if you ever want a great eyepiece the 22 LVW is first rate.

Orion Lanthanum Superwide 22mm
Recently purchased this my first really wide angle eyepiece. Have been using Plossels. I own an Orion 8" f4, and thus have a tremendous field of view with more power than the standard 26mm Plossel. The only problem here is that the outside 25" of the field of view focuses differently than the center on my f4. This focus shift was troubling until I went to our club's star party and tried it out on other configurations. ONLY my f4 was a problem. A Celestron SCT 11" was perfect, and even a 15" f4.5 was perfect out to the edge. By the way, the 15" Dob is owned by a Herschel Club member, and he was very impressed with this eyepiece's sharpness and contrast on M31, M32, and M110. We even picked up M74 despite light polluted skies in the direction of our city. I give the value an "8" only because it IS a lot of money for one eyepiece--but at least in this case you get what you paid for.

A superb overall eyepiece performer. Has great contrast - sharp to the very edge. Very comfortable, no kidney bean. Far better than the 22mm Panoptic. Clubs members could not believe their eyes when they first saw it on M17. We switched back and forth between the 22 Pan and the 22 Vixen/orion - NO CONTEST - a hands down winner..... Same result with the 17mm and 13mm. These are great deepsky eyepieces.

I heard a great word of mouth recommendation from 2 members of the club I belong to. The whole series is supposed to be better than the Teleview Panoptics.
Since I was in the market for a 22 Panoptic, but I thought I would buy one of these instead. I was able to get a GREAT deal on these from island-eyepiece.com. Asking
price was $185 US. After a long week, it came in the mail, and the sky was actually clear. Using my 10 inch f/4.8 newtonian, I was able to look at the sun through a filter and noticed how much easier it seemed to see small details. While I could see the same features on my Adaorama 25 mm Plossl, they just seemed more obvious with this eyepiece.
I did catch an almost full moon. I will say the view seemed to stay sharp throughout the entire field, in other words I didn't have to keep touching up the focus.
Since then we have had more than a week of cloudy, rainy skies. I cannot wait to get this eyepiece under some of our semi-dark skies and do galaxy hunting in Leo and Virgo.
I am very happy with this eyepiece, and am planning on buying the 8 mm. in the future.

Yery, Very nice eyepiece for the money. Works extremely well in my 6-inch, f7 newt. The FOV is great with little or no degradation at the edge. Great contrast and very good eye relief. Normally I don't like rubber eyeguards, however, this one works well and is very comfortable. All others in my collection are now taking a back seat to the Orion superwide. A bit on the heavy side but the sharp image and wide FOV is worth it! I can't imagine needing more than the full 65 degree FOV offered by this eyepiece, it's almost an eye-strain to view it all at the same time without moving your eye around. Have no experience with shorter focal lengths-- further review pending arrival of my new 12.5 (f5) due in November.

I haven't had a chance to do a side by side comparison with competing wide-field EP's in my scope (12.5" f/4), so I won't give a rating. However, this is my current "favorite EP" for this particular instrument. True field when used with a Paracorr is just under 1 degree, making it useful for finding things. Sharpness is good within the limits of the collimation. Eye relief is, I believe, somewhat less than the claimed 20mm, but is adequate for this eyeglass wearer.

I would like to compare the EP with a similar length Panoptic or "Super Erfle" to get an idea of where it fits in the pecking order of moderate length wide field EP's, but I suspect it would be competitive. I also suspect that it would get blown away by a 22mm type 4 Nagler, but that is to be expected.
