Orion 6" f/8 OTA
I have used this optical tube assembly (OTA) for several months and feel it is a great value and very good optically if expectations are realistic. 6" of aperture opens up a universe of planetary details and deep space objects that are very difficult to obtain in smaller telescopes.

The 1.25" focuser is adequate, but the now familiar sticky grease must be removed and replaced by white lithium grease if one is to achieve smooth travel, especially in the cold. I replaced the one on mine with an Orion 2" Crayford which is a much better unit, but installation takes some modification of the steel tube.

This is a long (48") tube so a sturdy mount is recommended. Mine is on an Astroview (EQ3) which I believe is the minimum mount required for this OTA. A sturdier mount would of course be better, but if on a budget the Astroview will do.

The optics are very acceptable for a telescope this inexpensive, notwithstanding a bad sample. Orion's service is notably responsive and if you get a bad one they will replace it. Collimation is easy and not as critical for crisp well focused views as in a faster telescope.

Summary: This is a very good all purpose telescope for the intermediate user on a budget, especially if you already have a sturdy mount to place it on. Beginners might find the long OTA difficult to handle, however. Those mechanically adept and willing to make modifications can easily make it better than stock.
