Obsession 18" f/4.5
An Obsession 18" is an all around premium Dobsonian telescope. My only complaint is having to use a two step ladder to view at the Zenith. With that in mind the Obsession performs without flaw, and works as good as it looks. If I could do it all over again I would buy the 15" model since I find I would rather not drag out the ladder (particularly on trips), and there is reduction in weight and size.

Pricey, but with fantastic optics and beautiful woodwork I have used this scope to explore the night sky for hours on end, complete the Messier list, get my lunar observing pin, and have started on observing all of the Herschel objects. A scope of a lifetime - and it usually gets great comments from others at star parties. The short focal length makes a ParaCor an essential accessory, and I wish the stock mirror support sling was made of aluminum instead of webbing that stretches and allows the mirror to shift slightly when at very low declinations. (An easy fix though).

Optics: The advertisements don't exagerate: stars in globular clusters are visable to the core with direct vision and is a sight not to be forgotten. On nights of good seeing the ice caps of Mars are crisp, bands of Jupiter are clear.

Mount: With a dobsonian mount, you just push the telescope around. While the mount is very smooth, there is still some stiction - which makes centering an object at 400x a little tricky. It's also not designed to track stars - although for anouther $3000 you can make the mounc computerized goto and solve these problems.

Ease of Use: Surprisingly, a 100lb 96" long telescope is actually portable. It takes about 5 minutes to take the telescope apart and put it in the back of my Honda CRV (with room for 4 passengers to boot!).
