I usually do not contribute to these discussions, but the unjust second review prompts me to leave a comment. These "made in Japan" binoculars (nowadays mid-price binos are invariably manufactured in low cost Asian countries) are VERY sharp considering the price. Its almost edge-to-edge focus is usually seen only in far more expensive optics. Cannot understand how the reviewer sees "lots of color", assuming that this refers to chromatic abberation ("purple fringing"). Maybe I'm temporarily color blind when viewing through these binos (I'm normally not) or he/she has received a bad specimen. I have compared the Nikon 8x42 DCF HR against other binos in my possession, e.g., a Pentax 10x50 CDF WP (roof) and a Nikon 10x70 (Porro from the early 80's), and they compare favorably in view of the substantially lower price. Rubbed coated and protected against water is sufficient for most users. However, these are no "swimming glasses" like the recent nitrogen filled WP types. Astro use is discussed and it is hardly practiced in rainy weather - at least not at our latitudes (63 degrees north). Do not hesitate if you come across these used. You won't be disappointed.

Sharp, versatile, high contrast and surprising bright considering the roof prism design. Very comfortable to hold for extended periods of viewing and of course also exceptional for daytime use too. Wide 6 degree field shows lovely pinpoint stars right accross the field, optically excellent. Obviously there are limitations due to aperture, but if you want small and capable then these come highly recommended, give very little up to my 10x50s porro prisms and are much more comfortable to use.
