Description:The K-mount is an alt-az mount for small telescopes. The maximum loading capacity of the mount is about 3.5 kg. The mount has full 360 degree slow motions in both axes. It attaches to a tripod with three M5 threads spaced 120 degrees apart on a 2-inch circle.

I use the K-mount on a Gitzo 1505 tripod as the portable mount for my Takahashi FC-76 refractor. The FC-76 is probably close to the limit of the carrying capacity of the mount, but the combination works well. The K-mount is fairly steady, but not quite like a rock. Focusing at high power requires care.

The best thing about the K-mount is the slow motions, which are essential for high-power viewing. The slow motions on the K-mount have a continuous 360 degree range of motion, which is great as there is no need to worry about running out of adjustment range. The slow motions work smoothly, following objects at 200x is easy.

The K-mount can't be balanced. It is easiest to keep the altitude axis always tightened and use the slow motion knob for all movements in altitude. The scope can be moved reasonably fast this way.

I have compared the K-mount to a Vixen Custom alt-az mount. The Custom mount is truly rock-steady, but on the whole I prefer the K-mount for its 360-degree slow motions and for its adaptability to different tripods, which makes it more portable.
