Meade Research Grade Orthoscopic 7mm
This is a great eyepiece for planetary. I use with my C8 f/10 and am extremely pleased. Sharp contrast to the edge. Narrow FOV and tight eye relief is ok considering the details that I see on Jupiter! Barlows well when the atmosphere is steady enough to allow high magnifications. If you come across one of these on the used market for a good price, I highly recommend.

This eyepiece excells at any planetary viewing. Of course the field of view is small but that is a given in an ortho. It is sharper and brings out more detail than my 6.7 ultra wide, enough that my roomate could notice the difference! Nice bright image, clear through out...if you can find one count yourself lucky!

I have owned a set of Meade RG Orthos, the 7mm is very good and superior to many mega-element eyepieces around. Ghosting is not apparent. Eye relief is normal for the design. The matte finish alumininum barrel is pleasant to hold and eyepiece is a lightweight. Clear views edge to edge. Used at F-7 and F-4 no image distoration and brightness is excellent.

Tested directly against University Optics and Pentax SMC 7mm orthos in a variety of SCTs and refractors on Jupiter and Saturn. Pentax was the best (no surprise here). MeadeRG and UO were essentially tied. On several occasions I had to check to see which eyepiece was in the diagonal. So if you can't find a Meade RG, get the UO and be happy.
