Best scope ive ever owned as far as goto & tracking. Ive had an ETX 125 with 497 autostar, & a LX90 that would almost rival the lx200 in pointng accuracy,! & now a LX200 8" Gps with uhtc Coatings! This is as good as it gets!!! Id recommend this scope to anyone!!

Meade LX200 GPS 8''
I have owned this scope for 2-months now and have used it over 10-different times so I feel I can make a fair assessment of it here. This is a very well designed scope with a ton of useful features. The optics are sharp and contrasty and the goto is dead on. This scope is fun to use, easy to set-up, and delivers world class performance. It is also rock solid on its mount and tracks all objects perfectly for hours.
I would highly recommend this scope to anyone looking for a solid, well built telescope with an accurate goto mount!

Meade LX200 GPS 8''
Bought secondhand, 7 years old UHTC model, very easy to set up, I find the GPS fix slow, by removing the finder scope the fix is quicker, about 30s. So quick to search, tracks and locates objects perfectly, the autostar is excellent for the information on what you are looking at with detailed data on each object giving an added dimension and education too. Came with a telrad finder, highly recommended, also peterson engineering ezi-dec and ezi-focus upgrades, bobs knobs collimation screws and JMI hard case which keeps everything clean and secure during transit. An excellent second hand purchase.

Meade LX200 GPS 8''
The 8" LX200GPS is the best optical instrument I've ever used!

It is the ideal size and weight that allows it to be easily transportable and it can be set up without having to be a weightlifter.

Once the GPS locates the local position of the telescope the GOTO's are flawless. This is the scope to get if you want to start looking for DSO's right away.

Highly recommended.

For visual use very good with Autostar. A lot of objects in a short time can be seen.

Sometimes Autostar behaves peculiar (roughly 1 out of 30 times). The best remedy: Switch off and switch on again and problem is solved.

Alt/Az for visual 100% OK. Polar is at start little difficult. But read, read, read info at the Mapug website (is for LX200 Non-GPS) but gives overwhelming good info.

I have read that for serious astrophotography the mount is not so good. However I have taken snap-shot photo's with a video-camera and photographed planets with ToUcam webcam, which were great. So it depends on what you want. I am not interested in making "hubble"-quality astrophotographs. Just some snapshots.

It takes time to get to know your scope. Collimation is easy but necessary. My advice read, read and read a lot on websites/yahoogroups. It helps tremendously.

I have owned this scope for about 3 months now, and it is a very good scope. My GPS has never properly aligned itself, I can never get a fix. I was told that it was because I setup to close to my house. Whatever the case, I really find no need for the GPS function since my location rarely changes, I do an Easy 2-star alignment and I am on my way. It may be useful if you travel alot with your scope. I have found the mount and tripod very stable and a good match for this scope.
I have the UHTC coating, highly recommended, why wouldn't you wan't 20% more light grasping and 0% added wieght. It is very easy to use, especially with the mirror lock and zero-image shift focuser, learn how to use these. I think it is a good value compared to what else is out there, I have not tried a Nexstar yet. The one thing I found out as soon as I bought this, is that I was getting a case of "Arpeture Fever". I keep thinking how much better a 10" or 12" would be, call it "Arpeture Envy". But, then again if I had a 12", I would probably want a 14". Will the madness never end!!!!

Everything is good but the quality control needs improvement. I have owned my 8" LX200GPS UHTC for about 3 months. More information about Meade's quality issue can be found on the website of Yahoo's LX200GPS news group.
