Description:Several weeks ago I brought a Leupold Acadia 8x42 roof bino. These are actually reasonably impressive binos. They are the 'entry' level roof Leupolds. The next two 'step up' versions are the Cascades then the Olympics. I tested all 3x prior to getting these versions - primarliy as the Acadias offerd a wider FOV at 7.5 degrees. The Cascades are 6.5, while the Olypics are 6.2 FOV.
What I am impressed with is the absolute minimal internal reflections on bright objects and lack of 'flaring'. There is no flaring noted on Jupiter - it displays a tight bright disk. On axis images are pin point sharp. Field curvature occours from about 70% out. The last 20% it becomes more severe with astigmatism. The FOV is still generallly very usable.
There is minor barrel rolling effect when panning.. E.R. is 18mm. The twist up eyecups are firm with no movement. They are an average 650 Grams / 23 oz.
They have a 'paddle' right diopter focuser - which I actually like - some do not.
The Cascades and Olympics are sharper to edge as to be expected.
They are all FMC, WP and PC. The Acadias have a 'Made in the Phillipines' stamp whist the Cascades and Olympics have a 'Japanese made' stamp on them.
They have a limited life time warranty.
Whilst this is not obviously an indepth review from my brief time with them they do appear to offer good optical and build qualities for the price. [Approx $US300 in New Zealand].
