What do you get when you cross the final two TV episodes of Evangelion with a shoujo manga high school romantic comedy? You get our dear Anno's most current series. Filled with still shots, spotlights in the dark, voiceovers, captions, and various other "shoestring artiste/we ran out of money" tricks, it seems that Anno is more or less wedded to the directorial style he developed in the closing chapters of Eva, to the point where much of the this show is barely even animated--it feels more like a moving collage or rotoscope. It feels, in fact, like a televised manga--and to prove it, there are sections where the dialogue is written out of screen, complete with voice bubbles! I don't like this very much after a while. Sometimes it works, especially when our protagonist Yukino is embarassed, shocked, or otherwise stopped mentally--but often it feels "cheap" and underproduced.

Nevertheless, this is a good show. The two main characters are lovable, generally optimistic, and--get this--actually seem like real teenagers. They don't have the entire world on their shoulders, or seem to be going through mid-life crises at the age of 14. No, in this they're simply idealistic and immature, whcih is what all of us were when we entered high school, and there was no other time ever like it. The relatively simply story still allows the characters to develop fully into genuinely likeable personalities; Yukino in particular begins to change from a rank hypocrite to becoming a forthright, mature woman because of her love and commitment; Arima, though already a well-adjusted young man, grows up even further as he learns to put his past behind him.

It seems that we are watching Anno himself change emotionally through this series, because the outlook that this show presents is much more hopeful (though not devoid of pain--to do otherwise would be false) and less paranoid and self-absorbed. The sense of reality that pervaded Eva is still here in Kare Kano, but to a different end. One cannot live in the darkness for too long before one's eyes long for the light, after all . . .

I believe this review is misleading.  KareKano, while having a simelar direction technique to the closing episodes of EVA or Death and Rebirth, is by no means as abstract.

Still it is a marrying of Manga and Anime stylings.  From this review you may get the impression that there is little Animation at all in this series.  With the exception of one or two uniquely stylised and flawlessly executed episodes this is entirely untrue.  There are more stills than most Anime, but these are used to piognant dramatic effect and a capable of evoking great emotion.

The animation itself is first rate, and extememly dynamic in it's use of technique, style and pace.  One could consider the stills to be part of this dynamism.  This includes on screen text that gives a great insight into the characters thought and feelings that are not expressible easily on screen or in the narative.  Although they do prove difficult to keep up with whilst coping with subtitles, it is hardly the fault of Anno san that I am not fluent in both written and spoken Japanese.

The styling of this Anime may be a bit too unconventional for some, but those who can see the merit in it's visual style are in for an extremely well written, emotional and thought provoking Anime.

A great example of how a mundane and unremarkable situation can be the basis for a truly remarkable work of fiction.

I love this anime! Romance.. funny...cute.. ^_^ I like Kano... actually, I like every very young character! o_O; Oi! Wai! Yukino and Arima!

Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances)
Excellent animation, good soundtrack, outstanding storyline, deep and interesting characters. A flexible drama that hits on all emotions. Keep your finger on the pause button, because there is a LOT of written humor that flies by. Apparently it is the most realistic portrayal of High school life ever to see animation. It's good - and it's done by Hideki Anno (sp?), the man behind Neon Genesis Evangelion.
